I spent an entire year negotiating with Samson, to license them all that material. They even bought my inventory and repackaged it. They have all her back catalog and from what I can ascertain, are completely clueless and lame about making it available. Hound them !! I've even heard from some of my former clients (like Echoes) that Samson told them the back catalog wouldn't be available for months, even though it's been sitting in their warehouse all newly packaged since last November. Go figure. I know their intentions are good, they believe in catalog business. So God only knows why it's so hard to get this stuff. Hound them !!!!!!!! Ask them how and where to get it !!!!!!!! Write them with these stories !!!!!!! If you order fom a store you should mention that it's supposedly distributed by RED (a division of Sony) Best o' luck. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 May 1999 07:51:54 -0800 From: Neile Graham Subject: Re: Happy's earlier CDs Ordering Info Rolf Peukert wrote: >Joshua Smith wrote: > >> I jumped on the Happy bandwagon a little too late and now I'm afraid I >> won't be able to get my hands on any albums from her back catalog! > >According to their web site, Samson Music are rereleasing Happy's >complete back catalog. Well, I hadn't until you wrote this. I went to her web pages and listened to the songs there and kind of shrugged, as I was mildly interested but not fascinated. I thought I'd just listen again sometime later. But I dashed into Tower Records yesterday afternoon just to pick up a copy of Susan Court's _High Relief_ to send to France for Yves, and saw a little impulse buy-prompting display on a pillar offering _Wishbone_ for $9.99, so, deciding that I should reward Tower for offering an indie release that way, I grabbed it and went home and gave it a better listen. It's something that's going to take a little time for me to digest as it's pretty diverse in style, but there was one song that stuck in my head on first play, and that's always a good sign (except of course if like Alanis Morissette's "You Oughta Know" you are never able to dislodge it). I can understand the comparisons with Waits, Harvey, and Phair, but all at very different times in the album. I think I'll like it. http://www.elenimandell.com/ - --Neile - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Neile Graham ...... http://www.sff.net/people/neile ....... neile@sff.net Les Semaines: A Weekly Journal . http://www.sff.net/people/neile/semaines The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music ....... http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 May 1999 09:35:36 -0700 From: deanorez@juno.com Subject: Rickie Lee Jones Many people already know about this but just to increase the line... It was my first experience with hearing her, and I just wasn't impressed. Anyhow, just got the a compilation called "Live from The River Music Hall Vol. 1" (presented by 92.5 The River). On it, there's a live version of a song called "Crumbs" that blew me away. It was mesmerizing. I don't understand what happened the other night. I couldn't understand a word she sung that night, but here she sang clear and beautifully. Maybe it was the sound, or maybe it was the fact that it was 95 degrees in there... not sure. Regardless, it's a fine compilation. Jonatha's song is a standout, as is excellent live versions of "Marianne" from Tori Amos, "In Or Out" from Ani DiFranco, "Stockings" from Suzanne Vega (it's amazing how different her work sounds without Mitchell Froom's production), plus Leah Andronde, Cowboy Junkies, Matthew Sweet, and Barenaked Ladies. - -- Mark Miazga e-mail: miazgama@pilot.msu.edu 302 Mason Hall, MSU East Lansing, MI 48825 (517) 355-2080 http://www.msu.edu/~miazgama Program Coordinator of The Common Grounds Coffeehouse. If you have a nice happy speedy connection to the web, you can go to http://www.starwars.com/episode-i/news/trailer/video.html to check out the two theatrical trailers in all their 15-26 MB glory, or some of the television advertisements or the music video for the first single from the album (no kidding, it was really released as a single to radio and mtv and vh1 and the public) "Duel of the Fates". From what I understand, when Lucasfilm allowed MTV and Vh-1 to start airing the video, VH-1 played it constantly for at least 1 whole hour. Nothing else. Just the video. And MTV played it several times that day. There is also an mp3 of the song available somewhere on the net. I'm not sure exactly where...one of those fan sites like theforce.net or something might have it. speaking of the Duel of Fates, I went down to Symphony Hall here in boston to see John Williams conduct the Boston Pops in a bunch of movie music including pieces from the Phantom Knickerbocker. Hm. Let's see. I spent 8 times as much for the ticket for tonight as i did for Star Wars. As with my purchasing of ticket and attendance with Star Wars last wednesday, I lucked out today. Last week, I was able to get a ticket for the Wednesday 12:45 pm showing of Star Wars at the Loews Cheri in Boston on tuesday evening and had no problem with lines for either the ticket or getting in. Tonight, I went to the Symphony Hall box office at 7:30, half and hour before show time, asked if the performance was sold out. The guy there said yes, and then continued that they only had some single seats left (odd logic of being sold out and having seats available). I was game and so I took a seat (if you've ever seen the Boston Pops on PBS, you've seen how they have chairs and tables on the floor. i was about 2/3rd back in the middle) and had a fine time. I was expecting a full Williams program, but it turned out to be a tribute to different movies with, of course, the Phantom Menace part at the very end. They performed the Flag Parade (nice bit of programming was to have the Parade of Charioteers from Ben-Hur performed in the first half of the show), Anakin's Theme, and Duel of the Fates. This was the third consecutive date of this program after the world premiere of the Star Wars pieces on Wednesday. Sadly enough, the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, which performed Duel of the Fates with the Orchestra on Wed and Thurs, didn't perform tonight, so we had no chanting and singing. But the song still sent chills up my spine. For an encore, they did another piece from a non-Williams movie, a kind of setup teaser since everyone was expecting of course the Star Wars theme. This was the second piece of the encore, and as soon as the fanfare started with the triangle ringing away, the audience went nuts. What's scary is that they weren't all GreasyFanBoys. ;) Ahhhh...wunderbar...maybe i should go see Star Wars again. [unless this 'ktel' has recently > started some overseas bootlegging operation] K-tel is a large company that used to exist mainly to sell compilation albums on USAn television. (I remember as a kid having a compilation of monster songs from K-tel, as well as the immortal "Goofy Gold".) Looking at their web site, I see that yes, they do in fact publish the "Alien 3" and "Frighteners" soundtracks that I purchased, as well as the Fatboy Slim album "Better Living Through Chemistry" which I almost bought. Hey, they also have quite a large Aphex Twin catalog... I doubt the myshopnow CDs are bootlegs, but they probably are CDs manufactured by K-tel under license, kinda like BMG or Columbia. I haven't received shipping confirmation from them yet, though. - --r. np: Romancing SaGa 3: Windy Tale, Kenji Ito nr: Cryptonomicon, Neal Stephenson ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V5 #187 **************************
