Well not really, but digging the fact that I can please just about every desire I have here. So I was completely cheesed off that Buffy was not aired. Boy WB made a big booboo. Like Jeff I missed the first epi cause the local WB was off the air - oooo was I ticked. Good Futurama though to ease my conscience. Phantom Menace. Loved it. See it twice. First time i was blown away by special effects. Second time I realized that it's actually pretty well written. Most of the things the critics saw as annoying, i actually found less annoying then the critics themselves. Yeah Happy @ Tin Angel. Alas, because of major unrelated computer maladies, I haven't had a chance to listen to it yet, :( It has been well regarded by the critics, although they do say it breaks no new ground for him. I'm a vinyl freak, so I always buy LPs when I can. I don't imagine they pressed too many and by now they may be difficult to find. The CD should be readily available in the US. Ectophile >extraordinaire Patrick Moseley suggested that I send out some S.O.S >signals to all of you! Can anyone help? I too was in search of complete Happyness a few months ago, and was finally able to collect all of Happy's discs on the Aural Gratification label; this is how you could go about it: 1. Place orders for the discs with the major on-line stores, including those that traditionally have store fronts, such as A&B Sound, Tower Records, etc. Most if not all sites will say that Happy's discs are "back-ordered", or even "out of print". But, I went ahead and placed on-line orders with several of them, including Tower Records, and, although the discs were "back-ordered" and I took that to mean "permanently out of stock", much to my surprise a few days later lo' and behold the discs showed up at my doorstep (literally). 2. Ask people here on ecto to buy the disc upon sight for you; since we ectophiles are spread all over the land, and spend our time frequenting independent CD stores, people are likely to find for you some of the discs. Of course, this assumes your promise to reimburse them for their expenses. By this method I was able to find a few more of the missing discs. Of course, I also ended up with something like four copies of Rhodes II, but they all soon enough found new homes; heck, I sent the extra copies to places as far away as the Netherlands, Canada, and Texas (that's three countries). And you could have been one recipient of my overstock, but, alas, timing is everything. 3. Cruise the Web yourself for indy stores which you may not be familiar with, and try ordering the disc for them. More and more ma' and pa' CD stores have an on-line presence. Although none of the indy stores I found on the Web produced the discs as quickly as methods 1 and 2 above, I still found several stores that were willing to take my order, under no obligation to buy, and try to track down the discs for me. All in all, I was able to find all of the Happy discs, largely by my willingness to place duplicate orders in a lot of places, and mostly thanks to the willingness and kindness of the ecto folk whom looked in their local stores for discs, purchased them, and sent them to me. - - Bill. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 May 1999 16:27:51 -0400 From: Paul Kim Subject: tidbits of news and other topics Ahhh...part of my work-study job here at Berklee is to go through various music magazines, including Pro Sound News and Billboard, to find articles that the Head of the Music Technology Department should know about and give him summaries of them. So I get to actually learn while I'm working :) In the past couple of Billboards, there have been some things that I think you might be interested in. Aside from all the MP3/Digital Download/Digital Audio stuff. The Cowboy Junkies have an album cutely titled "B-Sides, Rarities, and Slow, Sad Waltzes" coming out June 1st. It'll be only available through Amazon.com and their new website to be revealed that day also www.cowboyjunkies.com for the first 3 months. There was a Beth Orton bit article in the May 22nd Billboard. Nice to see her there. The Respond Benefit cd released here in Boston last fall got a huge write up for the front section of the news in this week's Billboard. Eleni Mendell recently signed an exclusive distribution deal with Bayside Entertainment Distribution for her independent record _Wishbone_. Del-Fi released an album called "DelPhonic Sounds Today" which features various artist covering songs from the Del-Fi archives, including stuff by Ritchie Valens. Nan Vernon appears on this comp. according to a friend on the tara maclean mailing list, Jane Siberry's "Calling all Angels" was used uncredited on "Charmed" last night. I think that the Assistant Chairperson for the Music Production and Engineering Department here was the engineer on Aimee Mann's _Whatever_ album. VH-1 will be broadcasting a new special "The 100 Greatest Women in Music" or something like that. It's a followup to their "100 Greatest People in Music" or whatever that was called. The list was compiled from responses by women in all the various fields of art and media. Happily enough, there is no Celine Dion or Mariah Carey on the list :) Why the hell was Ricky Martin on the cover of Time? Yes, I did give my semi-review of Star Wars TPM last week. To summarize, it was a pleasingly pleasant movie. The best part? Not having to wait in line to get tickets or to get in. And I saw it on wednesday at 12:45 in the afternoon. In Boston. about Jonatha Brooke : I saw her recently at the Berklee Performance Center. It's been awhile since I last saw her. Grey Eye Glances opened up for her (minus a drummer...is this who you were referring to, dave?). With both Jonatha and GEG, I find that sometimes they have songs that are wonderfully engrossing and beautiful or interesting; but equally they have songs that are just plain boring for me. Something that I dislike to have happen to me at any concert and seems to happen quite a bit, sadly enough, is that during a song my mind will start to wander because the music just doesn't capture my attention and hold it. It bores me. What sucks is that an artist or group will often plan their setlist to start off with a good song or two to appease the audience and then launch into the more boring stuff to pad out the show, throwing in a couple spices here and there, and saving the best for last. sure, not all concerts are like that, but when they are, they drag on and on and on... anywho. if you want to read David Bowie's commencement speech that he gave here at Berklee a couple weeks ago, get the latest Billboard. it's in there. i don't work for billboard, but boy is it chockfull of information, once you get past the dreck.
