Jules used to date Michael Yockel, who was my former editor at the City Paper alternative weekly in Baltimore, way back when I used to write for them. There are lots of dollar copies of Jules' CD in Amoeba Records' discount bin, so I figured it was worth taking a chance on! I like it a lot -- I think Jules would appeal to the same folks who like Tracy Bonham, Jen Trynin, etc. Not exactly ecto, but a good tough woman rocker. I've put her songs on several mix tapes and gotten positive feedback. One of my friends thought she was a guy (!) -- I guess she does have kind of a low voice...Anyway, I assume Jules is a nickname for Julie... Oh, for the ectophilic record stores list -- I know someone mentioned Streetlight Records' branches in San Francisco and San Jose, but I thought I'd say that their store in Santa Cruz kicks major butt. It's one of the best record stores I've ever been in. I found scads of out of print stuff I'd been looking for (both for myself and for others -- anyone else like to help their friends fill the holes in their CD collections?) VERY cheaply. - --Sue Trowbridge * albany, california trow@slip.net * www.interbridge.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 May 1999 00:58:58 -0700 (PDT) From: Bill Subject: Re: courtness On Sun, 23 May 1999, Damon des Jumeaux wrote: > now if only, now that she's performing, she'd come up to vancouver. i > asked her, actually, and she said it was a possibility. anyone here in > the area who'd come to see her if it happened? If you find the topic of cryptology to be terminally boring, if the idea of a plot line that sometimes involves a tech startup makes you yawn and if the thought of actually seeing math discussed in a novel makes you nod off then you probably won't like _Cryptnomicon_, so I'd hardly be surprised to see less than glowing reviews in the "mainstream" press. Well, Happy's touring seems to be pretty much the same as it was pre-Samson, so unless she actually signed to a major label and got a lot of support, I doubt things would be any different. It seems to me that a lot of performers have to go through a lot of effort to tour, but do it because they love it. Happy seems to like performing all right (that spoken as an occasional audience member, not someone who has any insight into her thoughts on live performance), but she seems to be decidedly uninterested in touring with anything short of a major, proffesional set-up. If this really is her mindset, I'm sceptical that much of a tour will develop. Hopefully I'm just a nay-sayer. >I mean If I am to >travel out to PA for a show, and all the seats are taken would that not >bite?! That it would. You can buy tix in advance for the Tin Angel shows.
