Annie Gallup, consummate singer/songwriter and road warrior will be featured on All Things Considered towards the end of next week. For those of you who may not know, Annie's new release entitled Steady Steady Yes (unproduced by David Seitz and Annie Gallup at The Theater, an incredible ultra-analog audiophile studio in New York City) was released earlier this month. Thanks to all of you who have been giving it airplay, with a special thank you to Rich Warren at WFMT, whose praise has surely helped to build Annie's following in the Mid-West. I was worried that, since she's like 14, the album would be just atrocious... but [to be a bit unintentionally-patronizing] she shows remarkable maturity for her age... I read this hilarious column in SPIN a few months ago that compared her to Britney Spears. It was the "New Product Face-Off", and basically, it implied that Britney is a mindless twit and that Shelby is a thoughtful, worthwhile artist... her voice is rather Jewel-y, but, in Jewel's kind of defense, that's in my opinion the only good thing about her (Jewel fans out there, keep them stones away from me!). Shelby's voice is still maturing, I think, so she's avoiding really cutting loose (though I am only on track I think seven), but I think she'll deliver a really incredible album in a couple years... I *do* like this a good bit so far, and that's good... the production (by Craig Street, whom Shelby says is a genius in the liner notes... I wouldn't go that far, but I of course wasn't there in the studio watching him "in his element" so to speak) reminds me a lot of Andrew Slater's work on Fiona Apple's "Tidal" (which is one of my favorite albums in the history of, like, the universe): it's lush, and bass-y, and it tries to sound timeless, and unaffected by trends... which is kind of funny, since the trend with some production these days is *not* to sound trendy... ah, irony, how you make me laugh. Anyhow, so Shelby Starner doesn't suck, thank God, and she's most definitely one girl I'm going to keep my eye on. And I'm trying my hardest to really get into some of the less-incredible songs on "Trailer Park", honestly I am... but sometimes, I just can't sit through "Galaxy of Emptiness" without getting fidgety... I've had her CD "anavoog.com" since June of last year, and I still listen to it a lot. It was in my top ten of 1998. In her own words, she makes "electronic pop, for lack of a better term", but that's kind of a bastardized way of putting it. Yes, there's programmed beats and thudding bass (ahhhhh...), but her lyrics are far better (original metaphors, by God!) than most other dance-type stuff... when I finally get around to doing drag, I'm definitely going to use at least three of the songs from the CD. She ranges from jazz to disco to ambient, and it's all equally good. Run, don't walk, to get this album. This month we are featuring another wonderful songwriter & musician: Joy Eden Harrison. I know some of you are familiar with Joy from her 1993 song collaboration with Jewel ("The Man Who's Already Gone") & her own tracks on the legendary "InnerChange Days" & "Future Folklore" tapes. Those recordings, as good as they are, are only a glimpse of Joy a few years ago. The music she's writing & performing now far surpasses those earlier recordings. Expand your musical horizons & educate yourself about this extremely talented artist & visit her Jewel Website feature. We've included a few photos, a bio with information about past & current projects, a wonderful "preview" of her new album "Unspoken" as well as a complete discography. There are also hyperlinks to FREE samples of Joy's music & online CD ordering information. Joy's album "Unspoken" is my personal favorite 1999 release. I highly recommend It!! She's an artist very deserving of your support & attention. Discover what the mystery is all about & enjoy our newest featured artist at Jewel's website: Joy Eden Harrison. Best wishes, MrBB P.S. I just got the 9 cd's I ordered from Harmony Ridge. (Thanks for sending them so fast. I am impressed!) The first one I put on is Emily Bezar-- Moon In Grenadine. I was really curious about this since she is an alum of Oberlin, the college I'm currently at, and there was a small debate here on ecto about whether I would like her or not. The verdict: I do! I can't say I love it yet, but I'm only on song 3 of my first listen. I love the piano playing though. Her voice is beautiful, but I agree that the classically trained singing takes a little getting used to. Although I don't find it off-putting at all, I think that it will continue to grow on me, and I'll be able to appreciate it even more. Some of the music is jazzy, some of it is slow and dreamy. It's different. It's definitely modern art-song. It's definitely ecto. And it's good. The other albums I got were: Disappear Fear-- Live at the Bottom Line Danielle Dax-- Blast the Human Flower Patty Larkin-- Strangers World Ana Egge-- River Under the Road Throwing Muses-- University Maria Sangiolo-- Follow Your Own Road Grey Eye Glances-- Eventide The only artists of these whose music I know are disappear fear and Patty Larkin, so I'm pretty excited. That is when and where I last saw Cyoakha and Azigza. I enjoyed Tin Hat Trio's set very much. Tin Hat Trio's music is hard to describe. I'll try my best. The have a strong French cabaret feel with some Middle Eastern flavour as well, but with a surreal twist. Their music would make good soundtrack music for an underground art film, IMO. Carla is an excellent violinist who plays at times with great restraint and subtlety and at other times with pure passion. Her tone is impeccable. There was some very interesting melodic interplay between Rob Burger's accordion playing and Carla's violin playing. The guitarist, Mark Orton, has a very percussive style of playing that tends to feel like a complete rhythm section of guitar, bass and percussion. Carla is also a member of Charming Hostess, the accapela group that I mentioned seeing about a month ago. One last thing for JoAnn's benefit, I believe that Carla is an Oberlin alum as well.
