Well, I've seen Lucy Kaplansky twice in the last few months. Once on the "Cry Cry Cry" tour, and once solo at The Ten Pound Fiddle Coffeehouse. She's a fine songwriter, although not very distinctive. Her singing is simple and plain, her guitar work is middling. But her lyrics can be something special, particularly in the title track of her latest CD. Her solo live show was highlighted by a nice repartee with the audience. She told stories of her mathmetician father, and a song about her mother was intro-ed with touching story about her. Stories about Dar Williams and Steve Earle (she covered a beautiful song of his) were also amusing. It was a nice show. And to everyone who wanted to review Lori Amey... I'll send you all stuff after this week. It's finals time! Thanks for your interest. > - -- Mark Miazga e-mail: miazgama@pilot.msu.edu 580 West Akers Hall East Lansing, MI 48825 (517) 353-3321 http://www.msu.edu/~miazgama Program Coordinator of The Common Grounds Coffeehouse. (not sure if that's the right > title or not) "Tomorrow Wendy" was the title. And the definitve, totally amazing version of that song appeared on a compilation for JJJ - our (Australian) radio station... It was a stripped down performance, just Andy Prieboy on vocals/piano, Johnette Napolitano doing her bit and Paul Thompson on drums. it was recorded live in JJJ studio in 91, and by God it still sends shivers down my spine whenever I hear it. I might even make an mp3 of this and post it for Ecto consumption because this is just too good to be forgotten. - ------------------------------------------------------ The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers. I'm sure there must be a reason. Does anyone know why? I'm just guessing here but it might have something to do with the reasons they stopped playing as Throwing Muses in the first place; you might recall they went bankrupt as a band. (I remember the comment, "we just can't afford to play as a band anymore", or something to that effect). So perhaps they are not using the name of Throwing Muses for some financial/accounting reasons? Such as, oh, I don't know - outstanding debts? But this is just my wild guess! - ------------------------------------------------------ The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers. You may find it by now as an import. It's called Equally Cursed And Blessed and IMO a much stronger offering than their first that was released last year and one of my top ten. There are particularly 3 outstanding tracks in the beautifully orchestrated Dead From The Waist Down, Bulimic Beats, and Nothing Hurts. There are only 2 of the 11 songs which I didn't think were really good on first listen and those two are growing on me more and more(Storm The Palace and Karaoke Queen). For those that enjoyed International Velvet last year this new one is a must!!! And for those of you unfamiliar with them I suggest you find a listening station and check them out. Maybe this release will bring them to this side of the ocean. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 May 1999 13:32:44 EDT From: JavaHo@aol.com Subject: Re: Karen Matheson's The Dreaming Sea Neile opines: << I do wish they would ALL keep away from those horrible sappy string arrangements. Last night I saw a pretty hot jazz show by Eric Person & Meta-Four. At the intermission, they announced upcoming shows, and one of them was for Boston (jazz?) singer Lisa Thorson. I didn't think twice about it until they were running through her band and came to Tim Ray on piano. Tim's an ecto favorite, well known for playing with Jane Siberry (and I wish I could remember where else, but I know it was good). Plus, he's simply stupendous. Anyone who can keep up with Jane on a solo show has got to be a pretty free thinker. Anyway, anyone know anything about Lisa? I'll probably go anyway, but I was just curious. neal np: New Experience - Michelle Malone ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 May 1999 06:29:16 -0500 From: Kay S Cleaves Subject: RE: Songs about AIDS Hey-- On the music about AIDS thread, just a few to contribute: "The Uninvited Guest"--Marillion (Hogarth has said that it's about AIDS...) I am making so many calls to EarthFirst and ecology centers in San Fran, Bay area and Northern California I don't know anymore who I have asked and who I have not. Here's the deal. BLind does concert in 10 days in Redway California to help raise funds for new documentary "TREE SIT" on Julia Butterfly's year in the tree LUNA. Same old benefit thing, someone rents the hall and system, takes out an ad or two, band drives and plays for free, show breaks even. Our didgeridoo player, Krystov had the mad flash to send the concert out worldwide via live video feed. We were stopped for several days by finding out you need a very expensive T1 line. He contacted the local radio station ( a cool very supportive community station) and they have all the equipment and the line into the center EXCEPT they can only host 60 log ins on the local server. We need people with expertise, sites that can host or servers. We are only doing this because the more folks that see this evening, the more that will know what is going on up there, and hopefully the more that will want to contribute funds. each dollar will go 50cents to Havc, the movie makers that are doing the rave, 25 cents to earthfirst and 25 to KMUD for hosting it. Band takes nothing. Please help in any way you can. SEND THIS ON TO ANY FRIENDS YOU THINK CAN HELP US! PLEASE! THANKS! "we are desperately trying to get a live video feed from the earthfirst benefit in Redway on the 15th. Local station KMUD is assisting with line and link and cameras but can only host 60 hits at a time. We NEED SERVERS, or fans with their own site and or servers to host it. So if our 60 log on and send it out to 15/20 more people, then we can reach a lot more. We need to make it international, so fans of BLIND and JULIA and EARTHFIRST can all watch the concert and hopefully we can raise a lot more funds for the makers of the movie "TREE SIT", a documentary of Julia's year in the tree. PLEASE HELP US MAKE THIS CONCERT HAPPEN!!!" contact us by email or phone if you can host a site (503) 321-5093 or (415) 789-9139 or lanblind@teleport.com thank you cyoakha PO Box 198 Mill Valley, CA 94941 (415) 789-8139 lanblind@teleport.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 May 1999 18:52:09 -0400 (EDT) From: Philip David Morgan Subject: Re: _Mononoke-hime_ (was RE: gaiman...) There was also something floating around that one of the Weinstein bros. (who co-chair Disney's Miramax/Dimension wing) wanted the film trimmed for time - that would be a direct violation of the Disney/Studio Ghlibi deal that prevents them from making cuts in the anime flicks covered under that deal. The other was a little more MTV-friendly. Go figure. I recall three, and http://www.u2faq.com/ lists four, one by Phil Joanou (director of Rattle and Hum), one by Anton Corbijn (mostly a still photographer), and two by Mark Pellington, who's done a lot of great video. I suspect that the two Pellingtons were probably slight variants of each other. I believe the image of the buffaloes was by David Wojnarowicz, and am guessing that that's the one Corbijn directed. But I could be way off.... ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V5 #160 **************************
