I'll have to pick and choose carefully. I MP3'd all of Happy's "regular" music for my own use, and those suckers take up some space, I tell ya! For the curious, here's how it breaks down. Rhodes I = 46 MB Rhodes II = 45.6 MB Rearmament = 56 MB Ecto = 62.9 MB Warpaint = 50.1 MB Equipoise = 56 MB RhodeSongs = 59.3 MB Building The Colossus = 53.3 MB The Keep = 51.4 MB Many Worlds Are Born Tonight = 53.6 MB My directory of "Very Most Absolute Favorite Songs" (61 of 'em) is 250 MB, and I had to painfully cull to get it down to that size. (The albums are on our DVD computer, which we network to, but I just had to make a VMAFS directory on my own computer in case the DVD computer was down. I listen to Happy MP3s more now than the actual CDs.) Oh, and "Mercy Street" and "Perfection" (Project Lo/Happy vocals) are 10.8 MB. That's as far as I've gotten. I plan to MP3 everything else too, for my own use. What I want to MP3 as soon as Chris gets me set up to do it, are specific live songs. Entire concerts would take God's own hard drive, so that's out, but I want to make some/all of the covers available. I'll get back to you. >My ISP, Illuminati Online, is fairly reliable, as local Internet providers >go. :-) When I tried to get the io domain for the (honest, it really is coming) fanzine, Inside Offworld, I quickly found out that your ISP had gotten there first. That's great. I hope they cast an eye towards Portland sometime soon. I may not be a liberal but I sure like a liberal music station! We don't have anything close, except KBOO, a listener-supported general-interest station that plays our stuff on some night programs, weekly. But no commercial outlet in town comes close. Only KINK plays KaTe, Enya, Loreena, Sarah McL, and other ecto-stars (no Happy in spite of repeated requests) so we are pretty MP3 and CD-dependent here. She's starting a women-in-the-arts networking system, with an on-line magazine, promo stuff, and lots more. She's been working on bringing things like PlanetGirl (a traveling concert show with Brenda, Too Cynical to Cry, Debby Schwartz, The Fuzzy Comets, Michelle Lewis, Rachel McCartney, and more) on tour, and she looks like she's got really lofty expectations for the project. With all the trouble with labels she's had in the past, she doubtlessly has some insight in how networking can salvage careers. http://www.womanrock.com check it out. - --mark - -- Mark Miazga e-mail: miazgama@pilot.msu.edu 580 West Akers Hall East Lansing, MI 48825 (517) 353-3321 http://www.msu.edu/~miazgama Program Coordinator of The Common Grounds Coffeehouse. I hoped to create a site that included other independent women artists who were navigating the treacherous waters of corporate America and pursuing an artistic career in the face of an isolated and unfunded society of artistry. The technology of the internet has made it possible to expand the idea of WOMANROCK.com to foster the growth and prosperity of the many talented yet unknown independent artists working on their own. To create space for this to happen, I am moving my personal website to a location within WOMANROCK.com. You can now find the Brenda Kahn Home Page at http://womanrock.com/brenda/index.html, and recognize it by the Rocket 99 logo. This will allow the focus of the page to grow beyond the boundaries of my music. So what then is WOMANROCK.com and what does this mean for you? You have supported me and inspired me to keep on recording music and playing concerts even when the industry made it seem hopeless. The many letters and emails I've received over the years have proven to me the power that exists in a community of people focusing their energy toward a common goal. You can check out the WOMANROCK.com mission statement at: http://womanrock.com/mission.html We have the opportunity to change the way music is heard, film is seen, and the way independent artists distribute and sell their work. In the coming months, as WOMANROCK.com becomes an established entity on the web, your input and presence will be invaluable. Here are some ways you can get involved: 1. If you are a freelance writer interested in contributing stories or reviews to the site, please send clips and a resume to: Brenda Kahn PO Box 1460 New York, NY 10009 or: brenda@womanrock.com 2. If you are a female musician, artist, filmmaker, or writer interested in participating in WOMANROCK.com events, send a photo, bio, press clips and a sample of your work (i.e. CD, slides etc.) to: Brenda Kahn PO Box 1460 New York, NY 10009 or: brenda@womanrock.com 3. Just checking the site often will be a show of support and can help us secure funding for WOMANROCK.com 4. Fill out the WOMANROCK.com survey at http://womanrock.com/survey/survey.html or put suggestions in the suggestion box at the bottom of that page! Although this project has taken time away from touring, it has been inspiring and energizing for me in terms of my own music. If you're in New York City, I will be performing at the first WOMANROCK.com event "PLANET GIRL" May 8th at CBGB's Downstairs Lounge http://womanrock.com/events.html. I am also working on new film projects, and new events with other women musicians under the WOMANROCK.com name. Thanks again for your sincerity and appreciation. best always, brenda kahn P.S. As always, if you were added to this list in error, please email me and I will remove your name! - --------------13FC959AE3480882ABA62A31-- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 May 1999 22:34:28 -0700 From: Neile Graham Subject: Re: Karen Matheson's The Dreaming Sea JavaHo@aol.com wrote: >I like celtic music in general, and I have some Karen Matheson and Maire >Brennan solo work in addition to their respective groups' work--Capercaillie >and Clannad. I think the band do it in an attempt to expand their appeal and maybe spread their wings a bit but it rarely, rarely works for me. When bands start to do that that's usually when they lose me, except on the rare occasions when their songwriting has lived up to the challenge. Few do. _Some_ (not all) of Steeleye Span's own compositions do, many of Sandy Denny's do. Almost all of Gabriel Yacoub's definitely do. I loved early Capercaillie--my favourite album of theirs is _Sidewaulk_, their second--and I like bits and pieces of the later discs, but the songs that are their own compositions aren't nearly as strong as the traditional material. Other artists do better at writing interesting pop songs than most of them do. But for me, I miss the old, lively traditional Capercaillie. I'll stay away from discussing Maire Brennan because she's way too sweet pop for my tastes. I've never been particularly drawn to Clannad, either. I do wish they would ALL keep away from those horrible sappy string arrangements. Gag! - --Neile, opinionated about this. n.p.
