And while I'm way too tired and drained (and, admittedly, a little tipsy) to go into great detail right now, I'll just give a little teaser and say that it was absolutely amazing. But hey, were there any doubts? One quick story. I was seated 11 rows back in an aisle seat. As curtain time grew closer, I noticed a guy milling about with some other people on my row, on the other side of the aisle. I thought was "man, he really looks like Lou Reed." So I stared for a while, and noticed that lots of other people were staring, probably all of them thinking the same thing. Then I noticed he was hanging with people who had VIP passes and such. Finally, one brave girl came up and asked for an autograph. It was indeed Lou Reed. (A friend informed me during intermission that he and Laurie are an item, which I did not know). Gosh, so there I am with a rock 'n' roll legend seating in my row, with only an aisle between us. Occasionally, during the performance, I would glance over at him to see his reaction to the performance. And, I swear to god, he slept through almost the entire thing. I'm sure he has seen it, and he probably had jet lag or something, but ... he. was. sleeping! I'm talking head all the way down, occasionally doing that jerk thing your head does when you're trying to stay awake. At one point his head was dangling into the aisle. At least he's not a snorer (or, not this night anyway). At the end of the show, after the standing ovation, we both stepped into the aisle to exit, and that's when I heard him say to his comrades "She acutally pulled it off." Well, I'll say. I went to the afterparty, but Laurie/Lou were too busy schmoozing (or, rather, patiently listening to all the other schmoozers), so I never did get to meet them. Maybe next time. Yeah, like I'll ever be in the SAME ROOM WITH LAURIE ANDERSON AND LOU REED again. OK, that was a lot to write for someone who's sooooo tired and still charged from the wine. More on the show in the next few days. But my immediate suggestion is DO NOT MISS A CHANCE TO SEE THIS SHOW! I can't wait for the album. The music was incredible. More later, Mark np are you kidding? ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Apr 1999 06:04:01 -0400 From: dave Subject: Melting CDs, free CDs for testing I haven't heard of CDs being damaged by heat in a car, but I have heard several accounts of peoples prized, difficult to replace rare CDs being stolen out of their cars, so I wouldn't leave any in there you couldn't get another one of. Now if you want to be scientific and test the effects of the elements on CDs there is a company that will provide you with free CDs for your tests. The CDs aren't good for anything else, and they'll be glad to mail you some for use in testing, making mobiles, designer clothes, solar reflectors... whatever. VERY good. One of my favorite CDs from last year. Their new single is incredible ("my favourite game") and the CD is totally not what you'd expect after hearing "Love fool" and the rest of the first album. When you're less tired, I'd love to hear more about the musical aspect of it. Lou Reed sleeping through the show is quite funny. It immediately reminded me of Tori Amos' showcase concert (Little Earthquakes) at the Bottom Line in '92, I believe. A lot of record company types and schmoozers were there to check out this "great new talent," including Derek Shulman, the head of her label. I sat two seats away from him, and he slept, head fully back and resting against the wall, and SNORING, throughout the whole show. Anyone who can remember the good ol' days of seeing Tori in intimate venues, you'd remember that it's pretty much impossible to sleep through one of her shows, only because her voice just pierced the air so incredibly high and loudly. - --Suzanne ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Apr 1999 09:41:24 -0400 From: "Foghorn J Fornorn" Subject: RE: CD Burners... When "The Empire Strikes Back" came out, it was an extraordinarily busy time in my life. I had to catch it four times before I was sure that I'd seen the whole thing, and I don't think I've yet ever seen the whole movie in order. I dozed off during the final act of Laurie's "United States" at BAM. Fortunately the live album was recorded at the performance that I attended, so I got to find out what I'd missed. I also dozed off on stage at Carnegie Hall while waiting, with the rest of my college choir, for the final movement of Beethoven's 5th. Fortunately the tenor next to me, when it was time, clamped his hand over my mouth and *then* nudged me awake, so I didn't make any out-of-context sounds :-) And I was the first person in the history of my synagogue to oversleep the morning of his Bar Mitzvah and get there late. npimh: Jewel: Pieces of You. So we usually play entire CDs right after the live band is done, while the engineer is putting stuff away. Everyone who loves fantasy and good writing must read: 1. The Sandman Series: 75 issues collected in graphic novel form from DC/Vertigo Comics. Also the two Death miniseries, a favorite with Goth girls everywhere! 2. His other Graphic Novels: Books of Magic, Mr. Punch, Violent Cases, Signal To Noise, 3. His novels: Neverwhere, Stardust and Smoke and Mirrors( short stories and an excellent way to get introduced to him). Any Gaiman fans with new info ( all i know is that he's working on teh Neverwhere movie and he wrote a story for the Matrix website) email me and lets chat. I seem to remember Ray Shulman as producer of one of the Roches albums. And Veda Hille mentioned being influened by them during inter-song banter (a gig I wasn't able to attend but thanks to Drew Harrington I have a copy of). Seems they're having an impact on ecto artists which I find surprising given their style of music. Anyone know what these guys are up to these days? I know there are other GG fans on this list. There is a Gentle Giant website up with the latest info, at http://www.blazemonger.com/GG/ - yes, that would be the same Shulmans, and I suspect it was jet lag that made him sleepy! My wife went to London last month and it was a killer jet lag! Remember 7pm here is midnight over there! Ray Shulman also produced the Sugarcubes first album, BTW. Well, since neither Don nor Mike have said anything, I guess it's up to me to come crawling back up to the surface and report on Kristin Hersh's most excellent show at the Knitting Factory last night. Thanks to Mike, I'd had tickets for this for a long time - but with everything else that's going on in my life I hadn't really had time to think about the show, even as I dropped everything at work and rushed to catch the train yesterday afternoon. I just assumed it was going to be Kristin solo, which is a nice thing, but not something to get me all worked up over. But then Mike clued me in on the fact that she was going to be playing with her new band, and I was interested. When we actually got inside the space and Don told me that David Narcizio is the drummer in this new band, I was actively excited. :) Keyboardist Ron Rust (who toured with the last Throwing Muses, didn't he) and Belly guitarist Tom Gorman, now playing bass round out the band. Why they don't just bill themselves as Throwing Muses, I have no idea. They played for over an hour, and it was an amazing set, consisting of pretty much alternating new songs and old Throwing Muses/Kristin solo material. I must confess I don't know hardly any TM song titles - usually I'm pretty obsessive about that stuff, but for some reason with Throwing Muses, even though I *love* them, I can't tell you album titles or song titles or which songs are on which albums. It's very strange. Anyway, I recognized "Limbo", "Gazebo Tree", and "Your Ghost", and the other old songs were ones I like a lot. :} I'm sure Don or Mike can fill in the gaps. The full-band arrangement of "Gazebo Tree" was simply stunning: it had a lush bass backdrop, and was very trance-like and haunting. Yum. The new songs are all really good, too. They're a bit more atmospheric than Throwing Muses, but are no less ass-kicking for it. Tom Gorman, being first a guitar player, brings a lot of extra sounds out of the bass, which greatly enhance the mood. And David Narcizio is simply one of the best rock drummers ever. I think Mike summed it up as we were going home: "the new album is going to be ... " Kristin was obviously having a really good time - I haven't seen her that animated on stage with a band, ever. At one point she burst out laughing in the middle of a song and had to start over. :) She didn't talk much between songs, which was a shame since her stories are usually side-splittingly hilarious. Still, it was a great time. Just what I needed after a particularly horrid day. The tour is just getting started - I think yesterday was the first official show. Definitely check it out, especially if you're a Throwing Muses fan ... this new incarnation definitely won't disappoint. +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Apr 1999 22:30:23 -0500 From: Kim Justice Subject: Re: CD Burners...
