Hi Vickie, Reading this gives the impression that Scorsese was in some way connected with, or even responsible for the movie, which he wasn't. One ought, perhaps, to mention that it was a film by Pressburger and Powell, who were largely responsible for the post-war revival of the British film industry. They were also responsible for Peeping Tom (a very strange and disturbing movie which was not supressed at the time, and has been revived quite recently), and A Matter Of Life And Death, with David Niven, which is possibly my favorate film of all time. I just finished reading David > Niven's wonderful autobiography "The Moon's A Baloon" and > now I'm trying to see as many of his films as I can. > I think A Matter of Life and Death was where the idea for Heaven Can Wait came from. The story was a pilot flying back over the channel with his plane on fire and all his crew killed, decides to jump, on the basis that he'd rather drown than fry. However the messenger from heaven sent to bring him back loses him in the fog, and so, much to his surprize, he washes up on the shore next day, still alive. By the time the messenger finds him, he's fallen in love, and is no longer willing to die. The rest of the film deals with the negotiations between heaven and earth, paralleled by attempts to save the pilots life while on earth. One of the things that made it so good was the parallels between what was actually going on on earth, and what he believed was going on in heaven. It was never clear whether the heaven side was real or his imagination. The film switched between colour and b&w for the earth/heaven scenes (I'm not sure if this was before the Wizard of Oz or not, but it was an early use of technicolour). Also the film featured the worlds largest moving stairway. - -Anthony P.S. Trivia: A Canterbury Tale, an earlier, wartime, Pressburger/Powel film was filmed in a village outside Canterbury called Fordwich, where I lived for a while as an undergrad. Actually it was a town rather than a village, but consisted of two pubs, a church, a town hall and less than 200 inhabitants, and was therefore the smallest town in England. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Apr 1999 14:16:41 PDT From: "Nick Nadel" Subject: hi everyone and cool bands! hi, i'm nick, i just joined the list. i see some postings from D.C. I got there Cd which i highly reccomend, reminds me of Innocence Mission, but with a stronger voice. Can I just say how bad I feel for 10,000 Maniacs. I mean, they were at their peak, had their biggest hit with "These are Days", toured with REM, had a big unplugged album with a big single, them Natalie left and they disspeared. They're on an independent label now, I guess Geffen dropped them. And they're still good! Mary Ramsey has a nice voice and plays and mean viola and there songs now are more radio-friendly than in the Natalie days. It just bums me out cause they are and were my favorite band. The albums with natalie are better than the new ones (one comes out in May), but they're still good! if you gave up on them in the past, give them a try. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. thier sound now is along the lines of what everyone on the list seems to like. One more request: any news on a new Katell Keineg album. she is incredible, definitely one of my favorite artist now after Tori, Sarah Mc. and Natalie Mer. any one who knows anything or wants to talk abotu her let me know. is she still touring? also, anyone have lyrics to Jet? yeah, the matrix was pretty cool. the new david cronenberg film existenz is better. She has a new cd (well over a year old now) called _Red Hand_ and it's her best yet. It's hand-done to the extent that she did all the packaging (cutting, gluing, handprinting--literally) each disc package herself. It's astonishing, both visually and aurally. I can't recommend this disc too highly--it's one of my favourite of all times. >I'll keep her in mind, as soon as EWS lets loose of my purse-strings enough >so I can think about live music again. ;-) Yes, I know what you mean. Nick, Welcome aboard! I'm from DC, but I'm an ex-New Yorker. Alas, with two small children I don't get to go out for live music much, but if you --or anybody-- hears of good groups coming to the Washington, DC area, pass it along: It's always worth the effort to track down a babysitter. Borders.com has some Katell Keineg CDs (I don't know which is the new one.) Same for Amazon.com, which has Jet for $2 less. Can I have fit more questions in 3 lines? ;-) This is a German disc that came out in 1994, containing tracks from the first four Rainbirds discs. The only track not available on one of those albums is a cover of the Rolling Stones "Sympathy for the Devil". I don't think I've actually been in the room while that song has played, so I can't say much about it at the moment. I imagine the disc is fairly popular, since a friend of mine in Germany just walked into a store one day and bought a handful of Rainbirds discs for me. (I think the store may have been in Viena, but still.) I can type up the track listing if you are interested, but am lazy enough not too without a specific request :) It's on Mercury (phongram gmbh): CD 522 743-2 neal np: Mantano - Omo Idehatoba (Japanese noise - good thing everyone else has gone for the day!) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Apr 1999 20:09:44 -0400 (EDT) From: Philip David Morgan Subject: Re: The Red Shoes (movie) on DVD Good Evening, Vickie et.al.: Something spectacular from Voyager: > Ballet and Technicolor buffs will be ecstatic that The Red Shoes is > coming in a Criterion edition at the end of May. It is, it really is. Michael Powell & Emeric Pressburger's masterpiece. A really good cry, to boot. And a spectacularly dramatic use of color (colour?) that can't be topped. Get it.
