Hi guys, I had a very fortunate Saturday this weekend.... There was this little record fair locally where no international dealers were present, but still I managed to buy a very cheap Tori 12" promo of "Raspberry swirl" for $12. Then I met a friend of mine, who's working as a photographer for various magazines here in the Netherlands, and she told me that Sarah McLachlan was to perform live next week in Amsterdam! I was very surprised, as I hadn't heard from this at all. She said that that was correct, as it hadn't been advertised. Apparently this is some kind of "showcase" concert meant for press, but still tickets were available to the "general public". She said I would easily be able to still get tickets. Knowing this, I finished the fair, walked around for another hour, and only then wentto the post office where tickets would be sold. I was very surprised upon ordering that these were the last three tickets!! Can you imagine how lucky I felt? The very last tickets to a concert that has not been advertised at all! Anyway, me, Marion and her partner Ron will be viisting Sarah live this Sunday at Paradiso. I'm very curious if other Dutch Ectophiles will be there. For other Europeans: check your local information points if Sarah appears in your country. I don't know any details, but it _might_ be that Sarah is touring Europe for promotional concerts like this one. Needless to say, having played "Surfacing" so much last year I'm looking forward to this eagerly. :-) Kind regards, Marcel Rijs marcel.rijs@konbib.nl (Mondays & Wednesdays) mrijs@nuffic.nl (Tuesdays & Fridays) mfgr@casema.net (Always) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Apr 1999 15:00:27 -0400 From: Paul Kim Subject: can you help me choose an ISP for the boston area I'm moving off campus in two weeks and thus am losing the ethernet connection that I cherish. Now I'm trying to decide what service to go with so that i can get my fix of email and webstuff through the summer and for the next school year. I know that there are some knowledegable techheads out there who know what the deal is with this stuff, so i'm looking for some advice. Currently, Berklee uses Ultranet as their on and off-campus service provider, so if i wanted to stay with the company what brung me to this dance, then i could choose to go with their Dialup Flat Rate plan with the Berklee discount (comes out to $14.95 a month). I could also choose to go with a totally different provider, but i'm not sure on all the kids out there and what their rates are. I do know that gis.net has an unlimited plan of 9.95 per month which seems good, and there's also ici.net which has an icky 24.95 a month unlimited plan. So, any suggestions? Responses in private of course, since this is non-listicular subject matter :) Paul Kim ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Apr 1999 19:33:24 -0400 From: Jeffrey Burka Subject: Re: tori/alanis tour announced woj sven-woj wrote: > Morissette pointed out [...] that listening > to Amos' Little Earthquakes as a youth [...] This statement makes me feel inutterably old. jeff np: _Murder, Misery, and Then Goodnight_, Kristin Hersh - -- |Jeffrey C. (My CD wish list has expanded considerably in the past week!) I'd like to mention one of my favorite groups: Figgy Duff. Figgy Duff heralds from Newfoundland. Figgy Duff has several CDs including Weather Out the Storm (the song by the same name is on Putumayo's A Celtic Collection), After the Tempest, and Downstream. Lead vocalist Pamela Morgan has a sweet, rich voice, and she has some of her own solo CDs. Figgy Duff's music has a strong Celtic foundation, as does a lot of music out of Newfoundland, but they're best described as a folk rock band. Some of their songs are traditional-sounding; others firey. The Boston Globe said, "The music of Newfoundland band Figgy Duff is like the fast island itself...wild, ancient and beautiful." And beautiful it is. Their songs are often evocative, drawing out a range of emotions when you hear them. The Irish Voice said that Pamela Morgan has "one of the loveliest voices north of the US border." Figgy Duff CDs are the kind that you can listen to over and over again (spouse willing, that is.) I don't mean to compare them to any of these groups, but if your tastes run to Capercaillie, Clannad, October Project and Renaissance, you'll enjoy Figgy Duff. Figgy Duff disbanded in 1993 after the untimely death of their founder, Noel Dinn. Pamela Morgan continues to make new music, though. Figgy Duff is produced by Amber Music (http://www.ambermusic.nfnet.com/.) Figgy Duff's CDs can be hard to find. I've ordered mine from some Canadian record stores, but you can also get them directly from Amber Music. Two stores I've ordered from are O'Brien's Music, http://obriens.nf.ca/ordr-frm.htm, and Fred's Records, http://www.nfld.com/duckworth/new.htm. - --Bill Bill Adler Adler & Robin Books Literary Agency 3000 Connecticut Ave., N.W. They're also one of my favourite trad bands (especially _After The Tempest_--I was less thrilled with their move toward pop though I still like it--mostly because the group's musicianship and Pamela Morgan's stunning voice made their slightly cliched pop come alive--I hate to say the cliched part, but in my opinion it's true though it's only _slightly_). Anyway, I was just in BC this weekend and noticed that the A&B Sound store in Victoria had all four of their original discs (I didn't see the later selected fifth disc). I assume that if it was in the store it will also be available online at http://www.absound.ca. As I said, I especially recommend _After The Tempest_ and of the more pop-oriented, my favourite is _Weather Out The Storm_ but really all of their discs are good. And Pamela Morgan's vocals are _incredible_. I also highly, highly recommend the duo disc she did with Anita Best _The Colour of Amber_--a stunning collection of traditional Newfoundland songs. There's an entry for them on The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music. The song was "Henry Martin" and it was used in the episode "The Gift of the Wheelman" which featured current teen movie star Ryan Philippe. That episode also used Sarah McLachlan's "Steaming" during a car chase scene. When i was working at Bibelot Book's and Music in MD, I did a search on MUZE for Figgy Duff albums, and they listed i believe only 2 albums, both of which were unorderable. Thanks for the info on how to acquire the music, Neile and Bill. Speaking of imports and buying cds, this past saturday, I went to Newbury Comics on Newbury street to kill some time and looked around for the Brianna Corrigan (former vocalist of the Beautiful South) album that I know has been sitting there since October, when it was priced around 24 dollars (when Newbury comics dropped prices throughout the store, the price dropped to 19.99) and I couldn't find it...I then looked in the Import Sale section and found it with another 5 dollars chopped off, so i figured, what the hey, I haven't bought a cd since December, might as well splurge. I browsed a little bit more and fell into the D section where I found, low and behold, an Anna Domino cd. It was available at 9.99, down from 17.99...it's an album from 1986 put out by Crepuscle Discs that appears to be self-titled. Good stuff that merits more listening. Oh, hey, Steve I, was that me you were telling to take note about Emm Gryner's wish to do a grassroots tour, or was that one of the other Paul's on the list you were addressing? non-related emm note: i was listening to Public a couple days ago when i noticed for the first time at the end of Hello Aquarius, as the song has nearly ended, a kind of speed rock version of the song being shouted out in the background. i found that interesting. Next paragraph. I too am one of many who has thoroughly enjoyed the Matrix, recommending it to everyone I know. My most prominent thoughts after viewing the movie were how similar in theme it was to Dark City and yet how it was many times better than that wonderful movie from last year because it fully developed its mystery and the entire story. I felt that Dark City was a little too short and left me wanting more, whereas with the Matrix, I felt like I had been fully entrenched in the story and it was engagingly populated (well, until the final extended siege/fight sequence). My other most prominent thought was how similar the fight sequences were to some Hong Kong movies I had seen fairly recently, especially The Drunken Master 2 with Jackie Chan, and Fist of Legend with Jet Li. It turns out that the fight choreographer who worked on the Matrix also choreographed for Fist of Legend as well as the original Drunken Master movie. If you enjoyed the kung fu in the Matrix, I highly recommend that you rent Fist of Legend (it appears to be regularly available from Blockbuster and Tower Records). Not only will you see some of the same moves and stances, but you'll also see even more astounding feats from a real practicioner of the martial arts. a final note about the matrix, i was watching that Byron Allen show last night and he talked with Laurence Fishburne about the movie, and he said that several years ago while on a flight, he met Jeanette Kahn, president of DC Comics, and she gave him a bunch of comics, including some Trade Paperbacks of the Sandman series by Neil Gaiman. He didn't read them until he got the part of Morpheus in the Matrix and the Wachowski Bros. told him that part of the character was based on the Comic book character. ok, i lied, one more note from the Matrix which ties this email together...Carrie Anne Moss, Trinity, was in a good episode of Due South, playing Irene Zucco, the childhood love of Ray Vecchio. Y'all, Okay, I was going to post about import singles anyway, but seeing as how it's already been brought up, I feel a bit more vindicated in bringing up a tangent: I bought a whole hell of a lot of import singles this weekend, and I figured I'd tell y'all about a couple of them. Beth Orton "Stolen Car" This has two b-sides on it, "I Love How You Love Me" and "Precious Maybe". The former is a cover of a Mann and Kolber song (whoever they are). It has a kind of 50's show-tune feel to it, so perhaps it's from that era... I don't know... anyhow, it's a nice, slower song... the real gem, though, is the latter song, "Precious Maybe", which Beth wrote *and* produced... it has a kind of Spanish feel to it in the guitar work... not flamenco, not at all, but those open chords, it made me think of Spanish music. Wow, I'm being extraordinarily direct and to-the-point with THIS post. ;D Lamb, much to my glee, is finally releasing their second album, and I bought both parts of the advance single, "b line". It's more jazzy than a lot of the material on the first Lamb album, and they seem to be following in the Portishead tradition of messing around with the vocals... Louise Rhodes' voice is high and kind of pinched in the song, much like Beth Gibbons' in a bunch of the tracks on _Portishead_. Anyhow, it rocks, and if any of y'all dig Lamb as much as I do, run out and grab the single. The store didn't have a release date for the full album, but I'll be okay, it's worth the wait. And at long last, I finally found the first part of the 2-disc single set for Tanya Donelly's "Pretty Deep"... the b-sides on it, "These Days" and "Influenza" are both excellent, as "Spaghetti" and "Morna" were on the second part, which I've had for awhile... I still haven't found either disc of the single for "The Bright Light", but I'm anxious to get both now... it's funny how two b-sides can totally renew one's completist obsessions with an artist... anyhow, short of ordering them directly from the 4AD website, I'm without luck in finding them... if anybody has them and wants to trade or something, email me... I bought more, but I doubt y'all have much more patience for this ramblingly-yours type of email, so I'll git while the gittin' is good. ;D John === ain't no way i lost this war and ain't no way you won _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
