She performed a song I didn't recognize, and hoping it was a track from a new album I checked her elaborate fan site at http://www.sas.upenn.edu/~arubin/noa.html to find out more. Well, the song she performed was from the soundtrack of "Babel", for which Noa and Gil Dor have written and recorded the title track last year. The new album "Haunted" is now said to be released "sometime very soon" (it was originally planned for last Autumn) :-( . However, there was a new concert date for the US: - - May 2. Philadelphia, PA, USA - Germantown Jewish Center (call 215-844-1507 for tix and info) If any of you happen to go there, please tell us all about the concert - especially if there are any new songs or more definite plans for the new album! Europe Daylight Time) From: Marion Kippers Subject: Review: Katheleen Michaels - Faces, traces & timelines Hi, Some time ago I got a copy of Katheleen Michaels' album "Faces, traces & timelines". This album features our own Bill Mazur on guitar, and I quite like it. I find it hard to describe 'why' though. Jeff Hanson wrote an elaborate review for the Ectophiles' Guide and I agree with him, so I could stick to a 'me too' message. :-) Katheleen has a nice restrained voice, and I like the way she uses it in layered harmonies. The songs are melodic, not too complicated but very nice to listen to. Most songs are a folk-pop-rock mixture, some acoustic, some featuring electric guitar, never loud but varied enough. The mood of the album somehow reminds me of the seventies, though I can't think of any names in comparison - I'm not too familiar with early Heart but I think that could well do. And I don't mean the music sounds dated, but rather that it's timeless. Her voice sometimes reminds me a little bit of a softer Chrissie Hynde. The album did not 'wow' me on first listen, but on second hearing I found myself singing along to some of the songs, and after listening to it more and more it really grew on me. It has been in my cd-wallet (the discs I bring to listen to at work) for a few months now, which is quite rare for me - there is always at least one Happy disc in my wallet, but most other discs vary per week or so. I find it very good listening in the background while being at work, it sets a nice atmosphere. Or perhaps for me it does even more than just 'setting a nice atmosphere'. It makes me feel - and here I'm at a loss for words, even in Dutch. Comfortable? Safe? I think comfortable might do. It helps me calm down when I'm upset with too much work, not in a 'relaxing' way but very subtile - it helps me cope with it. The album is very consistent, there are no real standout tracks, and no bad songs or songs that I like less. So I find it hard to pick favourites, though the opener "Don't cry" has to be one of them. Probably also because it immediately sets the mood for the rest of the album. Or perhaps because of the line 'Everything's gonna be alright'... More information about Katheleen Michaels and her album (including sound samples) can be found on her website at http://www.kmichaels.com/ Best wishes, Marion n.p. There were references (if I recall correctly) to Imogen Heap and Tori, but I have to say the disc did not bring either of those artists to mind for me. In all fairness, I have only listened to it once as I was a bit disappointed. I decided to shelve it for a while and go back to it with fresh ears and no preconceptions. If I were to offer up a comparison, I think the only artist that came to mind during that one listen was a softer Maria McKee. I'm not I huge fan of Maria, so that wasn't necessarily a good thing. I hate to say too much based on one listen, but I'll just offer that it wasn't a bad disc...didn't blow me away...probably would appeal to some Ectophiles. I would definitely listen before you buy, though. hth...Lisa ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Apr 1999 09:32:50 -0500 From: Suzanne Cerquone Subject: Laurie Anderson From the CD Universe Newsletter: LAURIE ANDERSON TAKES ON THE WHITE WHALE Former sculptor LAURIE ANDERSON has always carved out a special place for herself in the music world-- combining her trademark processed vocals, synthesizers & electronics, violin and poetic post-modern observations in elaborate multi-media presentations, she has always been more of a performance artist than straight-ahead music-maker. She is currently hard at work making last minute changes to her latest touring project entilted SONGS AND STORIES FROM MOBY DICK. The show, based on HERMAN MELVILLE's 1851 novel MOBY DICK, will feature musical performances, dramatic performances and striking projected visuals designed to flow over and around the collection of objects that will adorn the stage. Anderson has specially created a music computer-controller in the form of a harpoon. The movement of the harpoon will coax sounds from the computer as would a conductors baton guide an orchestra. The 5-person multi-media production will premiere in Dallas, Texas on April 29 and continue across the country closing in Berkley, California on October 30. An accompanying album will be recorded this summer. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Apr 1999 07:21:22 -0700 From: "Jeffrey Hanson" Subject: Re: Review: Katheleen Michaels - Faces, traces & timelines I'm glad you didn't stick to a "me too" message-- You brought up some good points. I've been listening to it at work since I got it as well. It's a real nice soothing mellow album, without being sickly sweet or overly produced. Ectophiles should definitely check it out. I compared it to Linda Perry's (ex-4 Non-Blondes singer) "In Flight" album in the ectophiles guide review and I think that's still the best comparison I can make. I heard Perry was going for a Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon feel when she made the album, and once I heard that, it helped me understand her album better--though it has its own unique sound. Katheleen Michael's album reminds me of that same sound. Has anyone heard what happened to LInda Perry's latest album? It was on the New Release list a couple of months ago but I have yet to see it in stores. Jeff Hanson n.p.Haris Alexiou- Live '92-'97 n.r. Alanis Morissette and Tori Amos, both noted for probing deeply personal territory in their music, will co-headline a summer tour, according to a press release issued by Morissette's publicists on Friday (4/23). The tour, kicking off August 18th in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, will route primarily through amphitheatres in major markets before ending September 25th at the Los Angeles-area Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre. MP3.com has scheduled a Tuesday (4/27) press conference in Los Angeles to outline their involvement with the tour, the press statement said. A Rolling Stone report this week intimated that the Morissette / MP3 relationship would permit MP3.com to distribute live recordings from the tour via its web site. Morissette pointed out in a written statement that listening to Amos' Little Earthquakes as a youth in Canada was a moving experience that she hopes to continue through their touring relationship, noting, ''I look forward to playing with a woman whom I will be touched by nightly on a musical, intellectual, spiritual and emotional level.'' Amos downplayed the serious expectations of a tour populated by songs of introspection and occasional rage, adding, ''Bringing two visions together to make one show can be tricky, so obviously, it takes a lot of mutual respect and a load of gear. With that in mind, Alanis and I are bringing two trucks just for ourselves: one filled with wine, the other filled with lip gloss.” Amos' RAINN (the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network) group is expected to establish a presence throughout the tour, providing fans at tour stops with both information on local resources and channels to help support the five-year-old organization. The tour, dubbed the ''5 1/2 Weeks Tour,'' will continue the promotional touring cycle for Morissette, whose Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie has not demonstrated the chart stamina that pushed her previous effort, Jagged Little Pill into record-setting sales territory. Amos will not have fresh product on shelves for the tour, but plans are reportedly in place for her label, Atlantic Records, to issue a two-CD set in the fall that will feature one disc of live material recorded on her recent from the choirgirl hotel tour and one disc of new studio work. Ticketing details on the tour are expected to be released shortly. I believe she goes on at 11, her manager told me. I wasn't initially all that blown away by her album, but after hearing a few songs from a live CDR, she is absolutely amazing. Her voice is incredible. She has a CD out _Art Museum_, and you can find more info about her out at this site: www.acronymmusic.com. If you're in Boston, I'd really encourage you to participate in the NEMO activities tonight at the Kendall Cafe, as Michelle and other great singer-songwriters (including Jenny Labow) will be playing. Michelle has some upcoming tour dates as well, and I'll post them later on. She is also an actress (theatre/film), does voice overs, as well as being a musician (piano/guitar/vocals/songwriting) who studied at Carnegie Melon. [And, if you're in NYC, you can see her manager and I occasionally perform (separately) at the Dark Star in Manhatten. :) We played last wednesday and it was a blast. :) ] take care, - -jessica http://adam.nettfriends.com/Jess <-- news, bio, snail mail list, more cd info: www.cdbaby.com/buy/weiser.htm ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Apr 1999 21:33:27 -0700 From: Peter Clark Subject: Shelleyan Orphan I've just come across several original vinyl copies of Helleborine.
