Lot's of output from Julian recently after a 7 > year break. Shirley and Dave, Thanks for clearing up the point for me. When I read Shirley's post I went immediately to listen to "Photograph Smile" and look at the credits to see if Dalbello was listed there. I had only listened to it twice before since I had bought it. I remember that I really liked the female vocalist on the song "Faithful". I'm not familiar with Dalbello so I was hoping that it was her on that song after all of the discussion about her on the list. I was hoping to get a glimpse of her voice and songwriting. It's good news that Julian is already busy working on another CD. I think that Dalbello is on the Indiemania sampler that I haven't listened to yet. I listened to two of the three that I received from Neile. I will have to check it out. Anyway... I just got in, it's late and I don't know if any of what I just said makes sense. Thanks again for your help. He's actually continued to record into the 90's. I forget when his last album was, but I'd say within the last 5 years. Vocally, he reminds me of Yes' Jon Anderson. He's got that upper range falsetto thing happening. Musically, he leans on that progressive pop rock style that could be compared to Peter Gabriel or Jon Anderson. I enjoyed his early to mid stuff the best. I loved the song "Moonlight Desires" which, incidentally, featured Jon Anderson on backing vocals. Wonder if Larry (Gowan) is still making music? And in any conversation about Canadian musicians I must always ask, does anyone know if Luba is ever going to release any more music? Sigh, this thread really brings me back! IIRC, only her two most recent albums are jazz. I've only listened to the newest one myself, and I agree with you that it was enjoyable but nothing spectacular. It was all very understated, and gave the impression that she has a very small voice (whether or not that's actually the case...) which didn't help it to grab my attention. I'm told that the previous album is somewhat better, so that one (I forget the album titles) may be worth a listen... although I guess that's the "earlier CD" you're talking about... np. favourite scenes from The Matrix, in my mind :) - -Philip ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 16 Apr 1999 20:59:16 -0500 From: Suzanne Cerquone Subject: Re: GOWAN Michael Colford wrote: >I've got 2 or 3 Gowan albums, and 3 or 4 CD's. Gowan is still making music. In fact, I saw him play at the Fox Run Living Room Concert (outside Boston) last November in an extremely rare U.S. appearance. It was all acoustic, and quite wonderful. He played 3-4 songs that seemed to sound more like his "Strange Animal" or "Great Dirty World" days. I have not been a huge fan of his '90s work. I really liked "Lost Brotherhood" (even schlepped up to Montreal to see a live show), but then he was convinced by some idiot in the business to go for a more "straight forward pop" sound, and change his name from Gowan to Lawrence Gowan. Blech. But he did smarten up and two years later, changed his name back to Gowan and put out "The Good Catches Up" which was far more decent. Still not like '80s Gowan, but still pretty good. He also released a live album (just acoustic piano and voice) called "Gowan au Quebec." And also a greatest hits CD that features a song for Princess Diana's death called "Healing Waters" that sold pretty well as a single in Canada. His voice is an acquired taste, but I wholly recommend it, if you like male voices a little unusual. And you also like minimal prog leanings. - --Suzanne ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 16 Apr 1999 21:53:11 -0400 From: Paul Kim Subject: fleming and john touring with ben folds five so, fleming and john are opening for Ben Folds Five starting tonight at Bowdoin College in Maine. tomorrow they are at Amherst College (also on this tour, on the 30th of April, they are hitting Williams College...missing out on the little three tour, for some odd reason, leaving out Wesleyan U *grin*) go to their website at http://209.239.57.169/index.html to find out more if you wish. also of interest for you Bostonites, Esthero is playing at Axis on April 30th.
