I rarely hear KaTe on the radio either, but have heard RUTH once or twice (once in the Limited Express at Quincy Market in Boston, once in a record store somewhere...) but I did, while in the Virgin megastore, home of "trendy crap played way too loudly", see KaTe's **video** (yes, leotard and all) for "Man with the Child in his Eyes" played over the in-store TV's. I was browsing through the Indigo Girls section, heard the familiar opening strains of the song, and blinked once or twice, not believing what I was hearing. Then I looked up and spent the next few minutes with my jaw on the floor watching KaTe on 200 some odd little TV's around the ceiling of the store. It was truly an experience to remember. As for Diane Izzo, I gave a listen to her CD at Tower, which is hyping her rather heavily. She reminds me most of all of "Guyville" era Liz Phair, very graphic in the vocals with a low-tone range in the melody. I hear no comparison whatsoever to Joni. It didn't impress me all that much. She's been appearing all over Chicago of late. Later all-- Kay np: 3rd Force--Force Field (wow, excellent smooth modern jazz) nr: the latest issue of Goldmine (so upset that I had to miss the Austin Record Convention...) ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. (I love Lisa Gerrard by the way!) I've tried to like Lisa Germano--and I actually can tolerate On the Way Down from the Moon Palace-- in fact, of all the Germano CDs I've owned (I think three), it's the only one that didn't go back to the used store. Meth described her pretty well when she called her morose. I'd call her whiny. I admire that she creates really unique music and has a very personal and unique vision, but her voice grates on my nerves like you wouldn't believe. She is one of the few concerts I walked out on (I mainly went because Melissa Ferrick opened for her). I really tried to enjoy Lisa's show, but her voice just really turns me off. Now Lisa Gerrard's voice, on the other hand, is truly amazing (plus she sings in tune!) She has incredible vocal control, and I can see her music might be described as "spooky", because it is as if she is channeling a voice from another world--her wordless lyrics are truly inspired (if you ask me.) I find Sanvean to be one of the most emotional songs I've ever heard. So, in summary, my take on Lisa Germano is, if you don't mind people who can't sing very well (such as LIz Phair on her first album), and you don't mind whining, you might like Lisa Germano. Her music is certainly original. However, if you're put off by people who can't carry a tune, I don't recommend her. Jeff n.p. Well, I'm going to be the anti-Jeff here. I'm an anti-Lisa Gerrard pro-Lisa Germano person. This is just to show the range of reaction to music here in basically two people whose musical tastes have a lot of overlap--Jeff and I really do have a lot of common ground, but this is a place where we _really_ differ. >I've tried to like Lisa Germano--and I actually >can tolerate On the Way Down from the Moon Palace-- >in fact, of all the Germano CDs I've owned (I think >three), it's the only one that didn't go back to >the used store. Now, on the other hand Lisa Gerrard's performances grate on me. I don't care how technically well she can sing, but there doesn't seem to be a feeling human being attached to that voice except in terms of pretentiousness and taking herself _far_ too seriously. There doesn't seem to be anything _real_ there at all. I can understand why people like her (intellectually, at least), but I can't stand her (my ears cringe). I only have one Dead Can Dance disc left in the house (_A Passage of Time_) and I never, ever play it. I couldn't listen to her solo disc, though I tried several times. I put me to sleep or got on my nerves. I wouldn't exactly say her music is bland, but that's the effect it has on me. It's made so smooth and smothered that I search in vain for something edgy in it, something with tang. No tang there. I know lots & lots of people here adore what she does, but not me. >So, in summary, my take on Lisa Germano is, if you >don't mind people who can't sing very well (such >as LIz Phair on her first album), and you don't >mind whining, you might like Lisa Germano. Her music >is certainly original. However, if you're put off >by people who can't carry a tune, I don't recommend her. You see, lemon is my favourite flavour. Tangy and sharp and a little too much for most people. I like curry too for the same reason. That's what Lisa Germano is. Lisa Gerrard is like a lot of whipped cream. I like it for a second but then there's just too much of it, it's too sweet and rich and I need some relief and I often suspect it's not really cream but an edible oil product (tm). Of course, what's _perfect_ is someone who mixes both, like Happy, Veda, Kate... - --Neile - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Neile Graham ...... http://www.sff.net/people/neile ....... neile@sff.net Les Semaines: A Weekly Journal . http://www.sff.net/people/neile/semaines The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music ....... http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Apr 1999 18:15:10 +0000 From: jjhanson@att.net Subject: Re: Gerrard, Germano It's funny that Neile and I differ so much on this, because normally we really do share similar tastes. (Well, sort of--we do have our share of differences-- she tends to like things crunchier than I, and I tend to like a lot of smoother show-tunier stuff than she does). > Now, on the other hand Lisa Gerrard's performances grate on me. There doesn't seem > to be anything _real_ there at all. I don't see how you can't see the human feeling, as listening to Sanvean seems to physically break my heart, but I can see your point on her pretentiousness. I kind of thought the same thing until I saw her speak on the Dead Can Dance Toward the Within video. There she seemed like the sweetest, most gentle, honest, and open person imaginable (as well as being very intelligent!) I I think that video really helped me to understand her. She definitely does carry a mystique--especially the way she dresses in robes, etc. She creates the image of being a "High Priestess" of music. But I think she finds singing a truly mystical experience, and she tries to share that by creating a similar experience for the audience. But I can see how that could be interpreted as pretentiousness. In this video she explains why most of her songs are wordless--because words often get in the way of the direct emotions--she compares finding the right phrase to express the emotion similar to finding the right words for a poem--but I can see why a poet might be frustrated by the lack of ability to express these emotions in words. > I wouldn't exactly say her music is bland, but that's the effect it has on > me. It's made so smooth and smothered that I search in vain for something > edgy in it, something with tang. Wow, I would never have considered her music bland-- but I guess it does have sort of that new-agey feel. I can see calling Enya bland, but not Lisa Gerrard. I guess her unique voice contains the edge I need. > You see, lemon is my favourite flavour. Tangy and sharp and a little too > much for most people. I like curry too for the same reason. That's what > Lisa Germano is. That's really funny Neile chooses these metaphors, as bright yellow is one of my least favorite colors (it's fine on lemons, but I wouldn't want to paint a room that color), and I'm not much of a curry fan either. I like it only in very small doses. As for whip cream, I can take it or leave it, but only like it if it's the real thing (not out of a can). ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Apr 1999 11:54:01 -0700 (PDT) From: Steve VanDevender Subject: Re: Gerrard, Germano I have a copy of _Geek the Girl_ but I haven't listened to it more than once or twice since I bought it several years ago. This discussion is making me want to try it out again, though. I too adore Lisa Gerrard, which is why I have most of the Dead Can Dance albums and her first solo album (and should get around to buying her second). Maybe she does come across as pretentious sometimes, but if I had to call someone in Dead Can Dance pretentious, it would have to be Brendan Perry. Nearly all of my favorite Dead Can Dance songs are favorites because of Lisa Gerrard's soaring vocals. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Apr 1999 16:08:39 -0400 (EDT) From: Cathy Sandifer Subject: at&t promotional cd Like female vocalists? You will. And the company that will bring it to you is AT&T. But I opened the box just to see what they sent, and discovered a CD. It's called "Stormy Weather", and apparently contains several performances from a benefit concert for the Walden Woods Project, produced by Don Henley. Anyone else gotten this yet? I have one that I downloaded from the net and I want to isolate a single picture from it to use on my home desktop. How do I "open up" a .scr file to see its separate parts? I use Windows and have access to various image programs, such as Paint Shop Pro, Image Composer and QFX, but none of them know what an .scr file is. Beyond that, I'd like to learn how to make my own screen savers without buying a professional kit. Is this an impossible task unless I'm an expert in Visual Basic (which I know nada about) or am willing to pay? Lynn Miles is excellent. She's from Canada - I guess I'd categorise her music as folk/country or thereabouts. I'm actually working (slowly) on a Guide entry for her at the moment but the rundown is that she's got two albums out on Rounder/Philo so far - "Slightly Haunted" (1996) and "Night in a Strange Town" (1998). I think she also had a couple of either independent or local releases in Canada before that; must try to track them down one day... "Slightly Haunted" IMO is one of the best albums of all time - it's way up there on my Desert Island Disc list. It's pretty solidly country/folk. "Night in a Strange Town" is more varied genre-wise and is also excellent. For me, though, NiaST was a "grower" whereas "Slightly Haunted" grabbed me straightaway. But, I do like them both... >My Mom loaned me her CD Night in a Strange >Town, and it's very ectophilic folk. >She reminds me of someone a lot--I just >can't think of who. "Night in a Strange Town" had a lot of moments that reminded me of other people, too. There's one track on there ("Sunset Boulevard") that really reminds me of Sheryl Crow. In other places she sounds a lot like Jann Arden. Overall though I'd probably compare her most closely to someone like Diane Ziegler... >It seems she's been mentioned here, but >my memory fails me. ... probably by me... *grin* >So far I like what I hear.
