Thanks! :) I went to look for Happy in the local stores, and here's what I found. Last Friday the biggest chain store (FRS) did not have any Happy available and could not find any order information for any of Happy's cd's, even though _all_ of them are listed in the on-line catalogue on http://www.frs.nl/ . I have no idea whether that catalogue is up to date and/or valid, it could be that it's the combined listing for the Free Record Shop and the infamous Fame Music Store in Amsterdam where they've had Happy's cd's available for many years now (imported), as well as many other import cd's. It's the same company. Today I inquired at another chain store (Van Leest, for those of you interested). No Happy in stock, but in their system all discs could be ordered - and yes, according to them "Many worlds are born tonight" is a Dutch release! The label is indeed Gold Circle like Marcel already wrote, the catalogue number is 141-GC. (Isn't that the same number as the US release?) Anyway, that's all the info I have at this moment. Apparently it's not widespread distribution yet, and not much promotion either. Oh well, I guess we're still looking for a true confirmation of Happy availability in Europe. Best wishes, Marion n.p. Yesterday, while checking out their Clearance section, I came accross a lot of cool ambient recordings that I've beenlooking for priced from $3.99 to $8.99, tops. Luckily, my tastes are not "mainstream" ( I couldn't care less about a 'hit list'), so most of what appeals to me is usually in clearance sections wherever I shop. Stuff like DEAD CAN DANCE, ORB, HAPPY RHODES, KEOKI, & HIGHER INTELLIGENCE AGENCY. Stuff like DEAD CAN > DANCE, ORB, HAPPY RHODES, KEOKI, & HIGHER INTELLIGENCE AGENCY. hmmm... I spent quite a while yesterday in the Virgin Records in Vancouver, BC, and did not catch sight of the said sale bin; but, then again, I tend to have tunnel vision when at a record store and looking for a specific title... Maybe when the sun comes out again I'll trek up there once more ;) > By the way: I am not a lackey for Virgin Records; truth be told, I > tend to avoid the store (NO RETURN policy, indifferent employees, > security too intense, and trendy crap played way too loudly), but I > thought You all might want to know about this sale... What an accurate description this is. Plus, very high prices: at the Vancouver store most discs were priced around CDN 22.00! And yet, the store was packed (but it was a sunny springtime sunday aftenoon...). Plus, they won't open a disc and let you sample it! So, I just ended up walking the few blocks north to A&B Sound, got to listen to a couple of titles that had looked interesting over at Virgin, and was able to make a much better shopping decision, and at a lower price. On Virgin's defense, though, wall-to-wall listening stations can be a lot of fun; I remember having spent many a night on the road getting my music fix at the local Virgin store ;) But that's about it, the rest about high-prices, no return policy, no opening of discs, too-blatant security, and "trendy crap played way too loud" is very true. Reporting almost live from the lush Pacific Northwest, - - Bill. :) PS: Oh! I almost forgot: Rufus Mainwright (sp.) will be playing live at the Virgin store in Vancouver sometime this week (I forget the exact date). - B. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Apr 1999 14:13:17 -0500 From: Patrick Moseley Subject: Kate on the radio! When "The Senual World" and "The Red Shoes" were released, you could hear the singles occasionally on the radio here, but I haven't heard them since then. I dare a radio station to play pre-Hounds KaTe. Speaking of "Running Up that Hill," also in the new Rolling Stone, Jeff Beck picks his five favorite tunes, and this is one of them. Back then, the materials for making records were at a premium, and people were frantically trying to figure out how to conserve them. The records at that time spun very fast, and went through a lot of shellac to portray music. Baffled by the problem of what to do, the employees of Amalgamated Audiotronics went on a retreat in the Appalachians to think about it. As a bunch of them stood on one of the mountains, one of the engineers, Vladimir Ghatishevsky, started skipping stones off the mountain and watching them fall. He knew of course, that each would fall at the same rate, but was amazed to notice that they also spun at the same rate, twisting in the air at exactly 100 turns every three minutes. Taking the stones back to the lab, they analyzed them and discovered that they had a uniform core, made of equal striations of quartz and sandstone with an extra heavy layer every fourth row. They then realized that the answer to their problem was that the music that they were recording was too complicated, and that if they simplified the meter to an even 4/4 and kept the harmonies simple, they could compress the music onto discs that would turn at a mere 33 1/3 RPM. They then recomposed the music and launched it on the nation, naming it, in honor of the tumbling stones, "rock and roll". The date of the discovery became a day off for the company -- until they were bought by Microsoft and the "Expedition of Thirty Three and a Third" was relegated to a note in randomly selected Outlook calendars, its name ignominiously shortened to fit the data format. Is this what you wanted to know? :-) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Apr 1999 00:37:18 -0400 From: Richard Subject: Re: Kate on the radio!
