If you signed up recently at a gig or on the web site to be on Laurie Geltman's email list, then welcome and thanks for being here. It's been g= reat being able to communicate this way with all of you. Especially nice has b= een the ability to chat via email with so many people; many of whom I see at g= igs and can't always talk to before or after the show. Know that I speak for = the band and myself when I say the folks we keep seeing make all the differenc= e in the world and we appreciate your smiling faces and support immensely!!! If you want to cut to the chase, scroll down for info on upcoming gigs in = NYC, Albany, Brooklyn, Boston area, Maine, film and radio stuff. As most of yo= u know, we will send brief reminders for these events as they come up, but t= he newsletter is....well, once in a blue moon! While I haven't yet re-organ= ized the email list so that you only get updates about your region, I'll try to mention where the gigs are happening up front so you can get on with the r= est of your emails. I understand that we all probably get a lot of junk email we don't want an= d if you got this and don't know why, please feel free to unsubscribe by emaili= ng dmavery@aol.com and put "remove from geltman eLIST" in subject. But of course, this ain't no junk mail, it's....The Once In A Blue Moon Newslette= r!!! And what with yet another full moon in the sky this month, it's practicall= y my duty to write something. I think it's going to be another sixty years bef= ore all this full moon action happens again. And I don't know about you, but = I'm not sure my physical being will be around to catch that wonder again; not = to be morose, but all that partying in my youth is going to catch up with me someday. Speaking of physical beings, thanks for all the sweet thoughts, candle lighting, and peaceful wishes that followed after I mentioned my cat Rodey= was having a tough time. He's gone onto the big windowsill in the sky and is looking out for me, I'm sure. Heavy sigh... Films: "A Lot Of Green" & "Payoff" I scored a film recently which was made by filmmaker Kaylyn Thornal. Some= of you probably remember her documentary Payoff that came out last year which featured women rockers in the Boston area talking about their dreams, struggles, turning 30, radio, success, etc. Recently, she made a short = film called "A Lot of Green" Description of the film: A wad of cash, a bus load of naivet=E9, and the space between the cue ball= and the object ball all equal up to "A Lot of Green." On the eve of splitting= her podunk town for fame and fortune in New York City, Dottie (played by real-= life rocker Kay Hanley of Letters to Cleo) encounters a suspicious billiard hus= tler who may change her life forever. "A Lot Of Green" will debut at the Seventh Annual Boston International Festival of Women's Cinema on Friday, April 16 at 10pm at the Brattle Thea= ter in Cambridge, MA. I did the music score and never touched a guitar...it = was a great challenge as was the deadline!!! Following "A Lot of Green" will = be a cool, German film called "Bandits" about an all girl rock band on the run = from the law. "Payoff" featuring Jen Trynin, Juliana Nash and me will be shown at the NE= MO Music Conference in Boston, Friday, April 23 @ 4pm at the Swissotel . Thi= s is open only to conference participants, but it will also be shown Saturday, = June 12 @10pm at the Harvard Film Archives in Cambridge, MA. Radio: Daniel Kellar (violin/vocals) and I will be on WERS for their live music w= eek on April 15th at...gasp...8AM. So while you're rushing to the post office with your tax forms, remember to tune in to 88.9 FM in and around Boston f= or some live in-the-studio music making. I can only hope my voice kicks in t= hat early...with the coffee. Studio News: Rocks Village is this cool studio I've been dropping into whenever I can t= o record. It's located in Haverhill, MA. Let me know if any of you musicians/engineers/producers want more info. Basic tracks for "Hook, Lin= e & Sink Her" and a new tune called "Safe" were recently recorded with Ken Sch= opf (from the band Slide) on drums and Brian Karp on bass. Both of these guys rocked!! Big Sound up in Maine also let me in to do some acoustic demos. = I'm just working stuff out now, but will keep ya posted as things come into BEING...twiddling around and having fun again in the studio. The Third Annual NEMO Music Showcase and Conference: Boston's music industry conference is a three day event taking place April 22-24. The whole thing is kicked off with the Kahlua Boston Music Awards = on April 22 at the Orpheum Theatre. Showcases are spread out in 20 clubs at night on Friday and Saturday. NEMO will be showcasing 200 bands/artists = this year. This will be our third time showcasing at NEMO. I have also been nominated for Outstanding Female Vocalist (Indie Label). Last year Ramona Silver and I tied both taking home this award...this year we'll be playing= on the same bill (very cool) at TT the Bear's on April 24th. Check NEMO web Site at http://www.nemo99.com for more info and updates. For all of you living in New York state, there's a bunch of NY dates in th= e next month or so. (They Might be Giants did the same trick with a hidden track on one > of their albums.) Didn't work for me either, but this same trick was also used on Lucy Kaplansky's _Flesh and Bone_: winding back to -3:30 from the first track gives you a nice acoustic rendition of the Beatle's "I've Just Seen a Face" and my CD player had no problem with that, so maybe some justification to Foghorn's April 1 suspicions? Hey all, Does anyone on this list know about the band (duo) Once Blue? I bought a 1995 album by them just recently--mainly for a song title--and find them to be delightlfully Ecto-ish and quite wonderful. The lead singer is female and can sound Rickie Lee Jones-ish at times, other times the music lends itself to a more jazzy vocal vibe. I'd love to know the history of the band members--if they've been in other bands--and if they're still around. The CD was in the bargain bin at Columbia House so I'm assuming they might not still be around. Thanks! - --Suzanne ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 01 Apr 1999 16:56:30 -0500 (EST) From: joann.whetsell@oberlin.edu (JoAnn Whetsell) Subject: Re: Anyone for Once Blue? I love that album! I saw Once Blue at the first Lilith Fair and picked up the album after that. I remember having trouble finding info about them on the net. But I did learn that their label disintegrated or they were dropped or something like that. Whether they're still together or recording, I have no idea. But I would recommend the album to Ecto fans. I can't think what I'd compare it to. I think the Rickie Lee Jones comment works somewhat. It's a great mellow album. - -JoAnn ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 Apr 1999 18:08:35 -0500 (EST) From: larnep@pathfinder.com Subject: Re: Anyone for Once Blue? > Does anyone on this list know about the band (duo) Once Blue? And I'm sure my CD player would have found it if it was there. It's a very recent model and shows the track pregaps as negative time as described. I relied on that recently to verify information on a disc I was going to copy using CDRWIN, since the extract program gave me an erroneous cuelist. What I seriously doubt is that there are some MWABTs with a hidden track and some without. It would cost money to do a 2nd remastering to include a hidden track. That would add to the production costs. I don't think Happy has the money to spare on what would arguably be a frivolous addition (the extra track concept, not the purported content of said). Ergo, April Fool, the more likely explanation. Also note the wink emoticon at the bottom of Patrick's email. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 01 Apr 1999 18:14:01 -0600 From: Chad Lundgren Subject: Re: Hidden track on MWABT 'Lo all, Patrick Moseley wrote: > Hello all... > > Forgive me if this has been mentioned before, but it was a surprise > to me! So if more of us are listening to it right now as a result of your timely trickery...then it's all good! Thanks Patrick. I saw them open for Lisa Germano at Fez in NYC during her tour for _Geek The Girl_. I don't think they had any tapes or CDs available at the time, but Lisa sort of melted my brain that day so I'm not sure about that. I saw them again as Once Blue when they opened for October Project, but I think I was more impressed by their former incarnation. And who like her music. Someone asked what people thought of Jane's videos during the Tori discussion. (I'm assuming the Kate was Kate Bush?) I've only seen the videos from the collection, which I love. My favorites are "You Don't Need" and "The Walking" and I like "The Life is the Red Wagon" a lot too, which she directed. Does anyone have copies of the When I Was a Boy videos or know anything about them? And does anyone have some of her songs that are only on soundtracks and stuff, like "Slow Tango". She did beautiful version at the Bottom Line several years ago. How I wish the plans for the live cd had gone through. Oh well. There's Child, and I do love that. Well, any thoughts anyone? - -JoAnn PS What do "np" and "nr" at the end of people's e-mails mean? I'm pretty new to the list and still figuring things out. Also, how do you get an artist on the list who isn't there yet? Beth Orton is wonderful and certainly needs to be on the ecto guide. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 01 Apr 1999 20:20:41 -0500 From: meredith Subject: Re: Sleater-Kinney on NPR Hi!
