I just arrived back home from England, where, among other things, I went to a Fairport Convention concert. Opening for Fairport was Anna Ryder. I'd not heard of her before (has she been mentioned here?), but I was so impressed that I bought her two cd's (and had them signed -- she was very, very nice in person; her stage persona seems to be her real persona). How many other singer-songwriters accompany themselves on guitar, piano, accordian, and trumpet? The latter two, by the way, she played at the same time on one song. I also might mention that I drove the 50 miles up to Ft. Collins two days before I left for England to see Susan McKeown. I would have loved to have seen her in Denver the next night, but alas, I was too busy getting ready to leave. It was the first time she played Ft. Collins, but while it wasn't a sold-out venue, it was quite respectable, and I think she really impressed her first-time viewers. I had dragged along a friend who was extremely impressed. I also ran into two old friends I hadn't seen in a while. They'd heard her on the radio earlier in the day and determined that they *had* to go to the show. They also were quite impressed. We had a chance to chat with Susan afterwards, which was a lot of fun, as usual. She said they'll probably return in the fall, so I'm looking forward to that. Keller" Subject: KY Haven't seen Kristeen Young dancing around with a sword...but it wouldn't surprise me either. I'll note here that I was a previous beneficiary of Bob's local research, and anyone who likes =Enemy= and =...All-Boy Band= will probably want copies of those earlier two CDs (under the band names Nov. 9th and Waterworks). The Waterworks album is genuinely fine by any estimation (less "scattered" than =...All-Boy Band=--I use quotes because the effect is deliberate, of course), and the Nov. 9th CD, while earlier, less mature, and more conventional, is pretty good too. She's followed a clear career arc, with each album noticeably better than the one that preceded it. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 27 Mar 1999 10:49:54 -0600 From: Carolyn Andre Subject: Re: Anna Ryder Ellen Rawson wrote about hearing Anna Ryder opening for Fairport Convention. The description was intriguing enough to get me browsing the web on a Saturday a.m. ... came up with a website: http://www.folkcorp.co.uk/ryder/fr_home.htm Includes an MP3 file that is a "sampler" from her new CD, Pockets On Fire (recorded with Fairport providing various backing - and her "playing guitar, piano and French Horns and harmonising with myself"). As an aside, I found the use of MP3 for the 'sampler' a great idea! a somewhat long download, but a good quality overview - not to mention avoiding the intellectual property/copyright issues with 'giving away' songs ... (painfully aware of this as I've just entered into an agreement with a copyright management attorney to handle documentation for the sound on the various artist sites I host) no simultaneous accordian, trumpet or French horn on the samples, but an intriguing listen. some variety of musical & vocal styles - but my Saturday a.m. brain can't come up with the right comparisons at the moment. btw - the Folkcorp website has a variety of Fairport-related artist sites on it ... Yes, GEG is recording a live album in Cherry Hill NJ, 2 nights, long shows. Here's a review and set list from the first night written by: "Michael A. Weintraub" from the Ethereal Dances mailing list, and edited a little bit by me. Great show. That's the easy review, but since I haven't done a gig review in a while, I might as well make this one a doozy. So, here goes: I got to the Triple Threat Arts Center around 5:30, having hauled ass from MD to get there. I wasn't quite sure what I was looking for, but once I saw the Unos, I knew I was in the right area. The TTAC is really a dance/music lesson place (where you take your kids to ballet class, i.e.) that GEG rented out for the live album recording. The band had just arrived when I did, and I really only knew I was in the right place when I saw Brett and Paul lounging out on the lawn in the back, enjoying the last rays of a sunny, early spring day. Finding out what the deal was as far as show time, list policies, etc., I retreated to my car and hung out for an hour, listening to the new Marillion remasters (plug plug), before going in. The band was soundchecking all the while, and I heard them run through Something to Live For, and later, they did it again (while I was inside) and got applause from the dozens of fans waiting patiently. There was a sound problem that kept the doors closed until just after 8, but everyone seemed patient. So, 8:15 or so the show started. Here's the setlist, with some comments: Set one: 1.) Hard 2.) In the Company of You Dwayne and Eric, while apologizing for the delay before the show started, had told us all that Jen would be starting the second song solo, with voice and acoustic guitar. They asked the audience to sing along, loudly, with her, once she got to the chorus. We did, and Jen seemed quite surprised. 3.) Promise Jen flubbed a line in this song. 4.) Hey Love/Feel Like Making Love Yes, *that* Feel Like Making Love. 5.) Something to Live For This was prefaced with Dwayne going on about the Corrs, which makes me think he read our recent discussion of them. He commented that Jen (now sporting an "Eventide haircut") resembled one of them, and he and Eric lamented that they didn't look like the sole guy in the Corrs, hence their lack of international stardom. So, anyway, Dwayne said that this song was written with a Celtic/Irish influence, and it was played thusly. Quite cool. 6.) Snow 7.) Float 8.) Better Part of Me Set two: 1.) Days to Dust 2.) Angel 3.) Passing of the Evening 4.) Close of the Day Dwayne said that this was played due to the "strong Internet based support". I'll take credit for that one. :) 5.) Even First new song of the show. I like this a lot. It's very progressive, and has some great guitarwork from Brett. 6.) Big Red Boat Another new one, a rollicking shanty-esque song, featuring Brett on mandolin. Dwayne gave this long intro to the song, explaining something that it was about two old friends getting together again to sail away on a big red boat, to escape from their problems. Apparently, it's all set in Omaha. 7.) Sleepy 8.) Halfway Back Another uber-medley here. Played within was Living Loving Maid, Bulls on Parade, Summertime, Lola (improvised as "I met her in a bookstore down in Marlton..." by Dwayne), Come Together (I loved Jen singing this one -- she sounds GREAT), Video Killed the Radio Star, Tubthumping (with Eric singing the "pissing the night away" part in falsetto), and I'm Just a Bill. There might be something else, but it was too much to keep track of. Set three: 1.) All I've Loved I've Loved Alone 'Nuff said. After the show, Dwayne asked me "Did you like the show? We played AILILA for you." 2.) There Wow. I wasn't expecting this one. It's a great live song, and I'm glad they played it. 3.) The Lost Coast Introduced by Dwayne with the standard "old friends" story. After the first verse, there was a major train wreck on stage, so they restarted the song from the top. 4.) Kind of Love Then, they redid two songs, which were coincidentally the first two that started the show, Promise and Hard. Promise was redone due to Jen flubbing the line, and I'm not quite sure why Hard was redone, but no one seemed to mind. Jen missed a line in the second go around of Hard, but musically, they nailed it. Dwayne sang a great backing vocal during the chorus out: a harmonized version of one of the verses that was impressive due to its improvisation. - - -- Mike Michael A.
