I dunno Meth, the way that I've seen communication going on several fronts lately, I suspect that it is! ;-) OK, I just walked downstairs and checked my Ephimeris. You are very astute Meth! Mercury is in Aries right now and went retrograde on Wednesday (the 10th) and will be until April the 2nd (just in time for Billi's and my birthdays). I don't know if you posed the question in jest or in seriousness, but you were right on. With all kidding aside, I have to agree wholeheartedly with your statement here Meth. It's really great to have a nice place to have a fun and lively, even controversial, discussion as long as it is respectful and considerate. I *love* Ecto's credo on this one. That is why I joined Ecto! I have been on the Internet for ten years now and have followed other news groups and mailing lists pretty religiously for the past three. Until Ecto, I never felt like I wanted to join a list or news group because of the flames or signal to noise ratio. I think it important that we newer members of the list show some reverence to those of you who established the it 7+ years ago. We need to uphold the tradition that has been established. It is a noble one, IMHO. ANOTHER IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER: I mean no criticism or disrespect to anyone on the list with my above stated opinions. Peace and Love to all of you on Ecto! Thanks to you, Andrew and Larry for the upgrade suggestions and empathy. I will upgrade to Netscape 4.5 sometime soon. There have been some reasons why I haven't to this point. Anyway, on with the responses. > - BUILDING THE COLOSSUS may be a pop departure for Happy, but I > still love it. It's also one of her most fun albums to sing along with. Any album that > can pull off the line, > "gonna need stronger underwear, uh-huh" without making me cringe has gotta > be worth SOMETHING. ;-) BTC is definitely a pop departure for Happy. I too am very fond of it Patrick. I can understand your feelings on "Dying". At first I really didn't care for this song either. The verses are *very* schmaltzy and cabaret. However, the chorus ("Can't you see I'm dying?") has such a beautiful and longing quality to it that just breaks my heart. You must admit that one of our other favorites, Kate Bush, does get a little schmaltzy herself at times. :-) Out of curiousity, why don't you care for "Big Dreams, Big Life"? It is not one of my favorites on the CD, but it is a beautiful and understated piece. The one song that I have been having a hard time with is the title track. However, with repeated listens it is growing on me. There is some great guitar work from Kevin in parts of the song. I don't care for the edginess of the arrangement. I also don't care for how Happy quotes M's "Pop Music" in the song. It doesn't work too well for my taste. I very much like "Hold Me" and "Collective Heart", although I adore the versions that are on The Keep (as you state below). I prefer the simplicity of versions on The Keep. "Just Like Tivoli" is such a beautiful piece with a memorable and haunting melody. Happy uses her high voice in such a lovely way. I really like the slow build into the song. Kevin's and Happy's atmospheric guitar playing is perfect on this track. This is one of my favorite Happy songs. "You Never Told Me" is another achingly gorgeous song. It tugs at my heart strings. I just adore Happy's singing on this song. Kevin's solo is exactly the type of guitar playing that I love and that I aspire to in my own playing. It completely suits the mood of this song. "Glory" is just a really cool with the languid bass playing and laid back groove. I love the way Happy uses her voice in so many unique ways with the rhythmic "ah ahs" and other vocal decorations throughout the song. Very, very creative! The ending goes into an interesting and unexpected area that I also really enjoy. I feel that this CD can really grab you as long as you are patient with it. I believe that it requires repeated listens to appreciate it. > - THE KEEP is proving to be a difficult album for me to get into. I > like "Life on Mars," and the acoustic version of "Collective Heart" equals > or surpases the original. "O Holy Night" is nice as well. As for the rest, > I either can't get into it ("Flash Me Up" / "The Yes Medley") or find the > original versions superior. But that's just me. It's still all great > listening. The Keep is really an outstanding CD to me. I fully realizes Happy’s acoustic side. It does so in a unique way though. Happy primarily just uses guitars, percussion and voice to create the mood. The "spacier the better" approach on many of the songs gives such an ethereal dreaminess to them. Happy uses chorus, echo and reverb effects in a very effective way on her acoutic guitars. Kevin is doing some amazing atmospheric work with his guitar playing and use of Fripp-like loops. Many kudos to Carl's otherworldly bass playing as well. Happy's singing is pure and wonderful throughout the disc. I feel that Happy and Kevin created a cohesive mood throughout the whole disc considering that these songs were taken from a number of different original recordings that spanned a number of years. "Temporary and Eternal" is another one of my favorite Happy songs. I love both versions of the song (The one on Equipoise and this one on The Keep). Other highlights for me are "Life On Mars", "Save Our Souls" and "Look For The Child". I feel that Happy does a wonderful job in interpreting other artist's works. The "Yes Medley" is great as far as I’m concerned. Happy's version of "Soon" sends chills up my spine. Her version of "The Endless Dream" is so different than the way Trevor Rabin does it on the Yes album "Talk" that she really makes it her own. I highly recommend the The Keep! > - Finally, MWABT, oldest, nearest, and dearest to my heart. I still > can't find a thing to criticize it. Get your free @yahoo.com address at http://mail.yahoo.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 13 Mar 1999 05:00:01 -0600 From: Kay S Cleaves Subject: The recent bigwig merger Hey folks-- Launching onto still another subject, I read in a local music mag about the recent merger between PolyGram and Universal to create the megamonster Universal Music Group. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the bigwigs, there used to be six major CD companies in the world (Sony, PolyGram, BMG, Universal, and two others that I can't remember right now.) Each one owns several smaller labels among which they divide the music in a sort of genre type thing. For example, Sony owns Columbia and Epic among many others... With the recent merger, Universal Music Group is now the largest commercial music company in the world. As a result, the two are each downsizing, dropping their combined labels to somewhere around 15 to make things more manageable. The result: many lesser known artists are going to get dropped from their contracts. Bigger, moneymaking artists like the Lilith headliners and major Hip-Hop acts (think, Boyz II Men), as well as established but less lucrative artists (think, Elvis Costello) will linger on, but over half of the catalogue of the two companies is going to be set adrift to find their way in the indie world. (Apologies for atrocious grammar in that previous sentence.) The article I was reading heralded this as a) a new force to be reckoned with that will cause severe upheavals in the high end of the music biz, and b) a potential for the great indie comeback of the year 2000. With so many artists being turned loose, it's only understandable that the independent labels they will inevitably turn to will start to make a bigger splash on the scene. As ecto is so rife with independent artists, I thought this might be interesting to mention here, and was wondering what folks' thoughts were about the whole deal. ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. I remember 20 years ago (!) when PolyGram bought out Decca-London... the summer of 1979.....the music industry hasn't quite been the same since. The real upheaval has yet to begin, however. I can't predict the fate of the classical imprints (Deutsche Grammophon, Argo, Philips' classical holdings - certainly the Philips logo will have to go since it belongs to the Dutch giant that once owned the lion's share of PolyGram). But downsizing the rosters to increase profits will definitely happen. I know they'll drop Grey Eye Glances pronto if they haven't already. PolyGram didn't give a &%$@ about them more than they did Shania Twain, and I doubt the folks in Universal City would, either. (Come to think of it, it won't surprise me if they give Nana Mouskouri - arguably PolyGram's most successful artiste - her walking papers, too.) Personally, I'd love to see people in general dump the whole music industry into the waste can and come home to hear their most musical neighbors. A good friend of mine and I are already envisioning a "culture union" that would network as many artists (painters, storytellers, and yes, musicians) on Long Island as possible. Possible outreaches could include a website and a microcasting radio station for the Huntington (New York) area. If my friend and her spouse would let me move into their house - and thus be at ground zero, so to speak - I will. I'm already making MiniDisc recordings(on my own portable equipment) of some of the very people we're hoping to reach. The Universal is NOT the future. It is, to me, a lot of ashcan. Oh, yes: I'm still an _otaku_ (Japanese anime/manga fan). I just can't wait to start putting out some homegrown stuff.....! I just wanted to tell you that I have purchased two Rhodes I cds from Amazon.com in the past few months (we must spread the joy- or the Happy-ness, must we not?). They say they are out of stock and will take 6 weeks to fill the order, if at all, but then they always pull a few extra copies out of...wherever they find it most comfortable to store them. Purest, most luminous marble in the world. Only the best for ol' Mike and Happy. But what does that have to do with the rest of the song, I wonder? -Anna Pryde "Just Like Tivoli" is such a beautiful piece with a memorable and haunting melody. Happy uses her high voice in such a lovely way. I really like the slow build into the song. Kevin's and Happy's atmospheric guitar playing is perfect on this track. This is one of my favorite Happy songs. P.S. Me, too! (anna) ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V5 #94 *************************
