Hey, all-- Last night I went to hear Mary Lydia Ryan live for the first time and was really impressed. She played all new material from the album she's working on now (plus a wonderful cover of "Ain't No Sunshine", and it is really strong)--the new disc is going to blow the old one out of the water. It has everything going for it that her first disc has (her lovely, warm voice and great piano and creative and melodic song structures) but she's pushed it to the next level--the songs are just that much more catchy and her performances just that much more varied and engaging and powerful. Anyway, it was wonderful. She's moved way up in my scale of favourite artists. Too bad it was such a short set--she was playing as part of a group of female singer/songwriters. We couldn't stay for the rest of the them since Jim had to be up at 5:00 for work, but we heard bits of two of them on the radio before the show and they sounded good, and stayed for two songs by the fourth artist and I liked her, too. Picked up a disc/tape by each one of them which I'll report on later. (Jim couldn't believe I did that, and thereby emptied both our wallets.) Some great local talent! The mail editor took the most recently saved copy and mailed it to the list. I had written a bit of other stuff (about two pages of stuff) and it was my first post in *months* -- I thought I'd be able to put off retyping (and trying to remember) what I was saying, but I guess not. I was surfacing (back from the dead) after many months of ecto-silence (but I was fastidiously lurking, which prompted a reply to the somewhat contentious * too many cds * threads). An abridged version of the lost post follows.... I have between 900 and 1100 cds in various spots, and am thinking of the sleeves that Niele recommends. However, only about 500 of the CDs are in alphabetical order (in the living room case); the rest are in various stacks, and in my two file cabinets at work (these are *never* in alphabetical order). Oh and a few are in these carrying boxes, which I wonder if those cool-sounding sleeves would fit inside of... Anyway, I've just changed jobs, so now I'm the new kid with questions instead of the old fart with answers (still software engineering, in the valley of silly cones). The new place has a longer commute and less interruptions -- before I could barely *start* a cd (one or two tracks) and I'd get interrupted (most days I didn't even try), but now I'm listening to 4-8 CDs a day between driving and working. But it has been busy, and hence part of the reason for my long silence. I hadn't even done a best of 98 post, but I'll comment that the major discovery (for me) of '98 was Veda Hille. Best discovery so far of 99 is Cat Power -- though I can see some people really hating it. Chan's quirky/stumbly delivery is quite intoxicating. In the "Oh Wow How Did I Miss This One" category, I really like Heather Nova's _Glow Stars_ cd - and I'm glad I got this before I got _Siren_ or I may have said that I had enough Heather Nova. I really like the intense imagery in songs like _Shell_, and _Spirit in You_, _Ear to the Ground_, and _Glowstars_ are nice too. Also in the OWHDIMTO category, I'd put Cocteau Twins and Bel Canto - two groups whose CDs I've just recently started collecting. I have one Cocteau Twins and about 6 Bel Cantos. I've just made a purchase (we'll see if music blvd has them all for reals) of the following, which was the fragment you saw in my previous abortive post - you can see that I'm completing my collection of readily available Cat Power, and building on the Cocteau Twins, and attempting to get into October Project. > What Would The Comm Cat Power > Happens All The Tim Pamela Golden > Living With Ghosts Patty Griffin > Smashing The Serene Rachael Sage > Falling Farther In October Project > October Project October Project > Silence Tara MacLean > Spirit Caroline Lavelle > One Eye Land Of The Blind > Blue Bell Knoll Cocteau Twins > No Mermaid Sinead Lohan NR: _A Fisherman of the Inland Sea_ by Ursula K. Okay. My last message on this subject was perhaps too oblique. Kindly unsub from this list. For many years Ecto has been an asshole-free zone, and does not benefit from your tedious and juvenile trolls. Barging into a quiet friendly cafe with a boombox on volume 11 is not a noble feat of self-expression - it just tells the world what an insecure little fuck you are. I don't find CD-filing threads particularly interesting either. But obviously a lot of other people do, so I just delete the messages and move on. Also, if you find a lot of threads that don't fit your interests, maybe you're on the wrong list. - Neil K. - -- t e l a computer consulting + design * Vancouver, BC, Canada web: http://www.tela.bc.ca/tela/ * email: tela@tela.bc.ca ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Mar 1999 18:19:26 -0800 From: Billi Mazur Subject: Do we need another hand yet? (Was: Re: *finger on the trigger*) Hello Everyone, IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER: The following post is meant in a tongue-in-check way! ;-) I wanted to pose a question. I need to proceed it with a statement first. Thank you! Under the section on the "ecto - The Fuzzy Blue Mailing List" on the Ecto Home Page it reads: Basically, nothing is off-topic here except for flames (long-time members can still count on one hand the number of flamewars that have occurred on the list in the past 7 years), and the list maintains one of the highest signal-to-noise ratios on the Net. So my question to the long timers here on Ecto (Vickie, mjm, Meth, woj, Neile, Jeff B., Joseph Z., any other Ecto long timers) is: Do we (the collective Ecto we) have enough fingers left on our first hand or do we need to start counting on another hand? To quote what my dear and lovable, but occasionally English language challenged, friend from Columbia said in an e-mail awhile back during a mild flame at our company, "Can't we all just get alone!" I would like to acknowledge and echo Joseph Zitt's reference to my favorite band: Googoogajoob! Peace and love to you all!!! Bill (posting from Billi's side of the computer again) P.S. - Yes John, I am one of those young old hippies that you like to see get axed first in the slasher horror films. ;-) Chris Sampson wrote: > > This has all the signs of never ending... > ...But is somehow compelling > (BTW, John, you seem to have effectively changed the topic...
