When we started running out of room on our large bookshelf and other assorted old CD holders, we bought a few of the rotating CD holders that Ikea sells ( each hold 400+ CDs ) and this ( with one of two of the old CD holders ) has kept us happy. We also went through and culled out some of the CDs we weren't listening to any more and gave them to some friends... In terms of ordering, we split ours by Genre ( Rock/Pop is one category, including singer/songwriter; Shows; Soundtracks; Disney; Classical; Easy Listening/Vocals; etc. ) My other half is a librarian and we disputed a lot when deciding how to order within a genre ( I like to order chronologically by artist ( Rhodes I, Rhodes II, ... )) while he prefers to go alphabetical. I've backed down and agreed to go with alphabetical - admitting that its easier to place the singles and other promotional CDs in that fashion. I wanted to also have sub-genres ( Ecto music, etc. ), but he wouldn't allow that as its not intuitive to other people. The one thing we did agree on was that our CDs should be out on display - they are something to be proud of, not something to hide in a closet... She sells CD Storage products, which come with sleeves in 'em, but when she gets broken units or can't sell units she'll keep the sleeves and give them to me before she sends the unit back to the manufacturer. I've gotten almost all of my sleeves that way. The ones I use are called "Bubblesleeves" by CD Projects, I believe, and are available online or at Sam Goody. They will hold up to two discs with front artwork. I haven't seen any other major stores that carry them. I've looked into Bags Unlimited, too, but as long as I keep getting them for free from Hold Everything I'm not gonna mess with success. I keep the sleeves in plastic shoeboxes, which are about $4 for two of them. They come with lids, each box holds about 100 CDs. I organize the collection mostly by artist last name/Band name, and then by Album/Single title. Soundtracks, Various Artist Discs, Xmas music, and Boots are kept separately. The back artwork from the Jewel Cases I keep in one of those big accordion files, filed alphabetically in the same manner as the CD's are. This is rather useful especially for trading, when most traders would like the original artwork sent along if it's available. The Jewel Cases I donate to a local mom'n'pop music store that offers to replace broken CD cases with intact ones if you buy a CD from them that has a broken case. I keep several for shipping CD's I burn in, as I buy CD-R's in bulk on a spindle... The last 25 or so discs I've bought are brought to work with me and played in rotation so I can really get to know them. Some discs stay in this "new" rotation for quite a while (the ones I really love) while others stay for a few months then get filed (alphabetically) with my collection. Several years ago, I was worried that I wasn't listening to a lot of my CD's. So, I started listening to all my CD's in alphabetical order. Now, I don't do this exclusively, but whenever I want to listen to music, but not a certain title in particular, I just pop in the next CD alphabetically. If I can't even get through it, or get through it and think, why do I own this, I sell it! I'm not a person who buys CD's just to own them and have a huge collection. I've never counted my collection but I know it's well over 1000, so I have no problem selling a handful of CD's I don't enjoy anymore. So far, I haven't regretted selling anything. It took me almost 3 years to get through my entire collection the first time, but at least every disc was listened to. Of course, that was in my 20's when I was going out a lot more and hardly ever staying home. In my 30's now that I've become much more of a homebody, I listen to music a lot more at home and get through the alphabet about once a year. I just finished the "O's" which meant I had to listen to all three (that's right, all three) CD's by the Outfield. And guess what? I only threw one in the sell pile! That means I still have 2! Of course, i also enjoyed listening to things like The Other Ones, and The Other Two, both discs I hadn't listened to for quite a while and had a lot of fun listening to. I just did the very same thing! My collection (apparently) is a lot smaller than your average Ectophile -- only about 400 or so CDs total. So it didn't take me long to listen to all of them. As long as I can still hear my phone ring, my boss doesn't mind me wearing headphones all day, so I was listening to about six or seven CDs a day. The result: my passion was rekindled for some old favorites I hadn't spun in quite some time; some cringing was done over certain purchases, many of them made to fulfill obligations to record clubs like BMG (the *only* explanation I have for owning such CDs as Michael Jackson's "Dangerous"... egads); and certain CDs I'd initially dismissed are now favorites of mine (such as Sam Phillips' "Omnipop"). Even though I had nosebleed seats at the Palace of Auburn Hills, Alanis still somehow was able to bring out the best in my situation. She's a fantastic performer, and perhaps pop's finest singer right now (understand I didn't say best voice -- she's far from it -- but few singers can wring so much emotion from their songs.) Her singing reminded me quite a bit of Janis Joplin's. Better yet was her stage antics. Her herky-jerky arm movements and lovably horrible dancing were wonderfully unaffected. Sometimes performers dance while on stage and look self-conscious doing, like they're only doing it because they're expected to not stand still. Not Alanis... she seemed to totally surrender herself to the music and let her body do what came naturally. Alanis also proved herself more adept at the guitar than the last time I saw her live, performing on about a third of the songs and doing so nicely. That being said, her song selection mystified me. She played everything from "Jagged Little Pill" except "Mary Jane" and the hidden track, and only about half of the songs from "Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie". The crowd seemed to love this -- of course -- but I already saw her for the JLP tour and find SFIJ to be a much more focused, mature, and an all-around better album. Not included in her performance of songs from SFIJ was my personal favorite, "That I Would Be Good", which could have been a huge show-stopper, and "Unsent" and "Joining You," both which have been getting airplay. She also didn't mix her songs up much, playing large blocks of songs from the albums with little inter-mingling. Still, she's a superb live performer. Garbage opened, and were pretty uninspired, IMO. - -- Mark Miazga e-mail: miazgama@pilot.msu.edu 580 West Akers Hall East Lansing, MI 48825 (517) 353-3321 http://www.msu.edu/~miazgama Program Coordinator of The Common Grounds Coffeehouse. If you are in Southern California, check out her shows! You can thank me later. ;-) This review of the album by Gerry Lipnowski says it far better than I could (follows). All the best, Alan Listen to the 'Unspoken' California sensation Joy Eden Harrison is poised to break through to a wider audience with the release of 'Unspoken,' the long anticipated follow-up to her critically acclaimed debut 'Angel Town.' Harrison has once again created an album of great sophistication, rewarding audiences who yearn for intelligent craftsmanship and substance in their music. "So much communication occurs in what's not being said between people," Harrison says as she describes the concept of her new CD. "Listening to the unspoken brings you to a totally different level of understanding." The album's 11 original songs are populated with a rich cast of characters, many of whom are unified in what they leave unspoken - from the overt lament in "The Secret", whose protagonist has "a secret I can never tell you," to the misunderstood "Everybody's Good Time Girl", who is not the person everyone thinks she is. "Miles Davis used to say that the silences and spaces between notes are as important as what's being played," Harrison, who has recently moved to Chicago, explains. "The characters on the CD are a bit like that. What they're incapable, or unwilling, to express tells you as much about them as what they say." Compared to Angel Town's faithful and highly original take on 1920's and 30's jazz, Unspoken features a greater range of musical expression and texture, with songs that reveal more of themselves in layers with each listening. From the opening lines of "40 Days and 40 Nights" - the first single from the album - it is Harrison's evocative voice that immediately casts a spell on the listener. Her hypnotic vocals provide the focus throughout the CD, whether it's part of a more orchestrated song such as "Leap in the Dark", or alone in the spotlight with the barely-there accompaniment in "Rubber Band". Each song displays the quiet charisma that has earned Harrison such a devoted following. The album culminates in what could be called Harrison's 'unspoken word piece,' "Yellow" - a compelling monologue that would not be out of place in a Tennessee Williams play. Rapidly becoming a fan favorite at her live performances, "Yellow" paints an impressionistic portrait of a woman who is terrified to use words. "My words are so fragile, they might break," we're told. While the songs' characters may leave a lot unspoken, the CD speaks volumes about Harrison's insight as a writer, as she displays a unique combination of vulnerability and sharpness of vision; a sensuality that is equally matched by her thought-provoking clarity. Unspoken confirms Joy Eden Harrison's reputation as an intriguing composer, gifted singer and compelling performer. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Mar 1999 12:01:04 -0500 From: Chris Sampson Subject: Re: LORD John Drummond wrote: > > Okay... this is so not an interesting thread... Firstly, let me confess that I covet your collection. I am only just nearing the 300 mark myself. Please forgive me my unsympathy for your plight. ;) I live in a very small bottom floor of a house with a large man and a large dog and three cats, and SPACE is a commodity...storage is under tables, under couch and chairs, lining the walls...you have to move an animal to sit down. So, of course I must continually buy more books and cd's. Usually 5 at a time. STORAGE SUGGESTION: Run a narrow shelf along the wall at ceiling level. You don't need to be carpenterialy inclined. use L-brackets and a plank. A 2"x6" piece as long as you like, hardware stores or lumber places will cut them for you. 10 cd jewel cases = 4" of shelf space. One shelf running the entire circumference of a 9'x12' room will fit approximately 1260 cd cases. (270 standard jewel cases per 9', 360 per 12'. adjust your room measurements, subtract your door opening space. 30 cases per foot. you get the idea.) For ultimate expandability, make a second shelf an appropriate amount of space (5" for the cd case + whatever margin you prefer) below it. It's cheap, it's out of the way, you can decorate it as you will, you can always see what you have, you can move cd's out of the way to insert alphabetically with a fingertip, you can reach it with a chair or stepstool, your cats won't steal anything, small children cannot mess up your order or smash fragile plastic. It even looks cool. Anyway, it's just a suggestion. (spoiler alert) Some of this was contributed (by the good graces of Happy) to the MWABT dvd/projection project. I'd love to hear from anyone else who contributed. I have much more artwork that I've been trying to make more coherent for contiguous web-ability...(including some full-screen images I really want to use AS full screen images and can't seem to get under 90k...any suggestions from alpha geeks out there?), need to move the resume from the index page to a back burner. I love the webring idea, but agree wholeheartedly with Vickie...I wish that it didn't have to be corporately-connected. This may be silly to ask or just a pain, but isn't there a way we can host our own cgi-driven webring internally on the ecto server? I didn't let viciousness fly, I only dropped one *mild* "cuss word" (though I don't see why any of us should be corrected by any others among us as to how we choose to use our language... somebody who was offended by how I speak may have some other quirk to their personality that is offensive to me... don't jump on any ridiculous martyr bandwagon because I'm not P.C.), and I even tried to relate it all to *music* somehow, since music is the reason we're here, allegedly, though sometimes I may think otherwise. So, I'll warn you all now: I've learned from my previous bazooka-firing mistakes, and I'm not going to get really pissed off about this, but if y'all keep wanting to have this ridiculously-polite double standard about who can say what on the list, then I *won't* hesitate to be as vicious and cutting as I possibly can. Yes, y'all can talk about whatever the hell y'all very well please... but that doesn't mean *I* can't. The fact that I don't like your current thread of conversation and actually have the balls to speak up about it doesn't mean you have to stop talking about it right then, now, does it? There will always be people who disapprove in your life. One would assume that we adults (har-har) would understand that opinions are just that: opinions. They vary from person to person, and they're overall unimportant. My intention (I always seem to be explaining myself to you people) was merely to indicate that perhaps we all weren't completely thrilled with the topic of where we keep our CDs. I even went to the trouble of suggesting something new to speak about, as I have already said, rather than just flying off the handle and lobbing molotov cocktails into every one of y'alls' open kitchen windows, though the temptation was there. So please, GET OFF MY BACK. If y'all are allowed opinions, then fucking so am I. ;p John == lyrics flow like spirits from the waters Moses parted _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? The fact that I don't like your current thread of conversation > and actually have the balls to speak up about it doesn't mean you have > to stop talking about it right then, now, does it? You just don't get it, do you? a) You can talk about whatever the hell you like; that's largely encouraged on ecto. If people are interested, they'll join in. If they're not, they won't, and the topic will die out. You're wanting to discuss Ani or Beth Orton was sensible. The way you went about bringing it up was idiotic to the degree that people found it more interesting to discuss *that* than the topic you tried to raise. b) Welcome to the magic of the "delete" key. If you don't like a thread, trash it. When it so obviously interests so many people, why bother declaring, rudely, that it's stupid? This list has been the way it's been for almost 8 years because the subscribers are adult enough to respect each other. > My intention (I always seem to be explaining myself to > you people) A clue, perhaps? > was merely to indicate that perhaps we all weren't > completely thrilled with the topic of where we keep our CDs. You come on strong and then complain when people respond to you gently. They're just telling you they don't like to listen to you complain. If you have the right to tell us you don't like a thread, then we have the right to tell you that we don't like to listen to you tell us, particularly when you always sound so incensed. We're all glad you care about music, but like being told off as little as you do. Learn to use the delete key when there's a thread that doesn't interest you as everyone else has learned and go listen to some music.
