Hey folks! Glad to see that people are interested in the webring idea. I've gone ahead and set up an ecto webring at www.webring.com. Once I get the ring's homepage setup, won't y'all come and join in? I'm presently working on a spiffy graphic for it...then I'll write the actual page. Should take me a couple of days, I've got family coming into town. So far, the following folks have expressed interest in a ring or a page of ecto links... http://w3.one.net/~fleur/ -- Joanna Phillips Brian Bloom (url?) http://www.whereitis.com/home/colford/ --Michael Colford http://www.sff.net/people/neile --Neile Graham Laura Clifford (url?) http://www.wagill.com/bill/ --Bill Wagill http://www.cqi.com/~jburka --Jeff Burka http://www.binky.demon.co.uk/riphug.htm --Jill D: http://members.aol.com/riphug/theeditorsmarkhome/index.htm --Jill D:'s writing http://www.kmichaels.com --Bill Mazur/Katheleen Michaels http://magpage.com/~sspan/ --Dave http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Gala/8060/Music.html --Kay Cleaves (me!) I'll be happy to serve as ringmaster for a while, at least until my tenure in Chicago is through, which should take us at least until August. After that, I still may be able to run it, we'll see. (I'm a theatre person, so I move around a lot. If I can keep my account running, I'll still run the ring.) For those of you who don't know how to join a webring but would like to, I'll post info on how to do it once I get the ring homepage up and running. - --Kay ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. I was just listening to an old Police boot LP that is so energetic and fun. Jeff, what's the name of that Sarah CD and what label? I'd love to find a good live Sarah CD. I also love boots that have unreleased studio sessions. A great Nick Drake boot, _Tanworth-In-Arden 1967/68_, is one of my most prized possessions. The sound quality is not the best, but that doesn't bother me- any Nick is good Nick. _Cathy's Home Demos_: how wonderful it is to have these precious songs on CD. There is a store here in Bellingham that has more boot CDs than I've ever seen in any store! Tons of 'em, however, are they expensive!! Over $30 counting tax on the average. I love to go there to just salivate. :) However, if anyone has any specific titles that they've been looking for, I'd be happy to look for it for you and send it to you if you pay postage. Lots of Sarah boots, many Tori titles, Bjork, and more by other artists, some ecto, some not. Reply personally, and I'll look next time I'm there. Please also list the *label*, since sometimes a booter will rerelease an old boot using the same title, but not with the same quality. If you don't approve of bootlegs, don't bother complaining to me :). I'm of the opinion that most people who buy bootlegs of their favorite artists already own most, if not all of the legitimate releases; that is, I don't think that buy- ing bootlegs is something that 'deprives' an artist of enough royalties to make any real difference. Sorry, I'm having a "bad hair", tempermental computer night. I have twice now tried to respond, with some detail, to Patrick's wonderful reviews of Happy's CDs. I have had technical problems that have trashed my work. Each time it took me about 45 minutes to compose my responses. Netscape doesn't let you save drafts (at least as far as I know it doesn't). I am going to have to always compose in Word, save all of the time and then cut and paste back into Netscape. Anyway... I *do* want to respond to your post Patrick. I will have to try again later. I am starting to get very sleepy right now. I do really enjoy your reviews! I am in a similar mode of absorbing the wealth of material in Happy's back catalog. It is a joyous endeavor. But also admit there are quite a few relevant webrings I never sign up for because the *only* accepted choice is a graphic that is even larger than the 'standard' advertising banners. On one of the sites I host, I've added all the links the artist requested and right now the content of the page (800x600 viewing) takes up 2 screen-heights and the ring and link graphics take up 1 1/2 screens. ... makes me wonder whether the point of that page is to draw visitors into her site or send them off to the various links immediately . as to size: perhaps that small graphic used as a button on the first page (click to join) would work as an alternate (??) At the time she lived in Melbourne, recorded an EP and toured around Australia a little bit. I saw her play two or three times, bought her EP ("Overloading God") and I expected her to go far. Instead, as it often happens, she just vanished. Now I understand why... she did indeed go far - she moved to New York! Oh well, good luck to her. By all means, check her out if she plays near you. She was showing a lot of promise back in 97 and I imagine she's developed even further. - ------------------------------------------------------ The world is divided into good people and bad people. I saw the cheap titles on A&B a few months ago and scarfed them up (cheap CDs and cheap shoes are my passion!). More on those in a minute. My first introduction was "Bound by the Beauty" when it first came out--I believe I got a promo cassette. I liked it, but didn't love it. It was, for me, a little too "twangy." Although overall, in 1989 I didn't have the "emotional intelligence" to absorb female singer songwriters like I do today, or even five years ago. In 1989 I was mainly listening to Yes. Kate Bush was my only musical heroine. So Jane was a bit of a departure. My next introduction to Jane was actually face-to-face, in a most unusual way. I was at the Bottom Line in NYC with my brother-in-law, Jeff, in 1993-4, seeing a musician I can't for the life of me remember. The place was literally empty--about 15 people total for the show. Jeff is famous for spotting celebrities, so as soon as we sat down, he said to me, "Jane Siberry is sitting at the table next to us." I had to think for a minute who she was, but I believed him because just earlier at dinner he pointed out sports great Keith Hernandez! Well, as the night progressed, Jane got quite sauced and started making a bit of a scene. She was sitting next to this very tall, very muscular black man, and the more she drank, the more she was sitting in his lap, often kissing him. With the place so empty, it was quite the spectacle! We were all a bit amused by her moxy. (Why I didn't pick up her albums after that fateful night, I'm not sure. Had it happened today, I'd be sprinting to the store!) Which brings me to present day. I had a friend in California who saw the "Child" show and just wouldn't shut about how great it was. A few months later I bought the disc and was floored. I loved the diversity of the holiday songs, especially the Jewish song (what fun!) and the one where she speaks about a young girl in trouble. (Forgive me for not mentioning song titles, I'm too lazy to place my laptop on my coffee table and get up and look....) Another friend (hi Spencer) had "When I Was a Boy" and recommended it, so that was the second purchase. This is my far my favorite. There is something just so incredibly angelic and spiritual about this disc. It has somehow changed my life, and yet I cannot express how. All's I know is that I love it wholly. Now I'm delving in her back catalog and really don't know what to make of it. Nothing has really grabbed so far, or as much as "Child" or "WIWaB." Someone mentioned Jane's early cheesy synths, and that somehow detracts for me, but not completely. I'm still hearing some brilliant lyrics and overall vibes. But I'm still absorbing, really. I might speak more cogently in a couple of months. But ohhhhhh yeah, she is something special. - --Suzanne ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 06 Mar 1999 23:05:57 -0600 From: Suzanne Cerquone Subject: Re: Julia Darling Jessica wrote: >Discovered a new, cool NYC singer... I concur that she is worth a listen. I have a friend who works for her label in NYC, Wind-Up, so I have her CD in my possession. It's very good. I'm not sure if this is a debut or if Julia has released other discs in the past, perhaps in other countries. A friend said she is a bit like Tracy Bonham, I hear a little Patty Griffin. But she's also just very "Julia." Wind-Up is doing a lot of pre-marketing for her release, and I'm sure will continue once the CD is out in June. Hopefully she'll continue touring down the line, too. I missed her in Philly just this past week (she says putting the big "L" on her forehead). - --Suzanne ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 06 Mar 1999 20:49:29 -0800 From: "Bill" Subject: Re: Jane Siberry / A&B Sound On Sat, 06 Mar 1999 23:00:15 -0600, Suzanne Cerquone wrote: >Here's my .02 on Jane Siberry, albeit a bit late to the discussion here: > [big snip] Thanks for the candid review, Suzanne. My ecto-buddy Larry was over last week and left behind Jane's "Original 1980 Recording", and _No Borders Here_, and _Maria_. So far I have only really listened to the first one, and have enjoyed it enough to play it a few times at the computer while I work. I particularly love the chorus in _Writers are a Funny Breed_, it is truly angelic. Then I played _No Borders Here_ once, and it sounded very differently from the former disc. Granted, I was in the middle of some hairy work and did not devote to it much attention, but, on the other hand, it sounded different enough for me to notice. Now I can see what so many people here meant when they said that Jane was "different in each album". I will give _No Borders Here_ a couple of more plays, and then I will move on to _Maria_ and see how that goes. At any rate, I have held off ordering Jane discs from A&B Sound till I see how they do with my first order; so far, they are not doing too well, as nearly half of my order is on backorder, nearly the other half is spread around in warehouses, and one title is "new release", meaning they don't even have their hands on it yet. Sigh. So, I may go looking for Jane somewhere else. And, when I do, I think I'll start with the "Original 1980 recording". - - Bill. ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V5 #83 *************************
