Have any of y'all heard of her? She was a jazz/blues singer known as "Little Esther" at the start of her career in the late 40s, and she had several hits, culminating with the album I have, which was nominated for a Grammy... here's the fun part: Aretha Franklin ended up winning the Grammy over Esther (of course... in light of our recent Grammy struggles, so to speak, I'll avoid speaking further lest my tongue fork), but GAVE IT TO ESTHER in her speech! She, Aretha Franklin, thought that Esther deserved it far more than she did, which I think is a higher award than any gimpy Grammy... wow. Anyhow, Esther has simply an amazing voice... it's very raw, and jagged, but apparently if you know how to juggle a knife correctly, it can be subtle too, because she can deliver a song SO amazingly. Diamanda Galás, from whom I heard of Esther, says that she "has phrasing like there's a razor in her throat", and oh LORD, can you hear it! I would highly recommend this to anyone... if y'all want stylistic references, I'd say Nina Simone and Billie Holiday are somewhere vaguely in her hemisphere, but comparing these women is like comparing Tori Amos and Fiona Apple and Emily Bezar for the simple fact that they all play piano... yes, Esther sings jazz/blues, so that does mean she has a *somewhat* similar voice to Billie and Nina, but then, Tori *does* play piano, and thus creates some similar sounds to Fiona and Emily, and I'm saying this in as loose and non-committal a fashion as I *possibly* can, since we all know that all three of these women are quite quite different. I'm merely providing a point of reference... ANYHOW... what I'm meaning to say in this is that Esther Phillips is one of the goddesses of later jazz/blues, in that she can (to be trite) make any song she sings into her own composition, since her personality and style bleed so heavily over into the feeling of the music. I've ordered her newly-released Best Of double disc, it should be coming in next week... *thrill* And speaking of Esthers, have any of y'all heard Esthero? I've told Neile she/they (PJ Harvey, eh?) needs to have her own Ecto entry, but if y'all don't know of her, we can't have her with only one comment from just me... ;D Anyhow... so comment on her too... I was going to write a more in-depth description of poor lil' Esthero, bless her heart, but my hands are tired and my damn arms hurt (stupid *condition*) so we'll just have to trade commentaries back and forth later on in the day or something. ;D *kisses* John == lyrics flow like spirits from the waters Moses parted _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? It's the new Mathilde Santing, called "Wonderful life", and for those who recognize this title: yes, it's a cover of the 1987 (and before) track by Black (a.k.a. Colin Vearncombe). She arranged the track beautifully and you can hear an MP3 of it on my Black website (http://home.plex.nl/~mfgr/black/ -- go to the Sounds page). The B-side is very beautiful as well, it slightly reminded me of people like Toni Childs and Lori Carson musically. Laura ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 5 Mar 1999 13:20:48 -0500 From: Patrick Moseley Subject: Even *more* reactions to Happy's catalogue Hello all... Well, this entire week I've been listening to all of Happy's discs over headphones while at work, and so I've listened to each one at least three times over the past five days. I already posted my review of RHODES I earlier this week, but I've had so many other random thoughts on all this that I thought I'd share... - My initial reactions to RHODES I and RHODES II were kinda lukewarm, as I had a hard time distinguishing between songs. The more I listen to them, though, the more I'm really starting to love these two albums. There's something about the music on these two discs (and to a lesser extent on REARMAMENT and ECTO) that is absent from Happy's more current music. That's not necessarily a bad thing, because I think Happy's music has many facets (or so I'm quickly discovering)...but the depth of sadness that is evoked on these albums is stark, both lyrically (of course), but even moreso musically. While at first I had a hard time finding a single standout track on RHODES II, recently I've discovered how moved I am by the music of "Not for Me," which makes me sadder than any other Happy song (irony!). And I love it! I'm not the kind to get teary-eyed by *any* song, but this one definitly makes me stop for a somber pause while it passes over me. This same sense of sadness is also reflected musically in the tracks "I'm Not Awake, I'm Not Asleep" (I) and "Let Me Know, Love" (II). - I'm also amazed at how Happy takes something as simplistic and repetitive as "Many Nights" and still makes it so compelling! Genius... - Not all my repeated listenings have brought out great discoveries, however. While at first I ranked RHODES I and II at the bottom of my list, I'd say ECTO now holds that spot. While I adore "If So" and "Ode," if you were to take away those and the bonus tracks, I'd be hard-pressed to find much interesting (to me) on this album. I'd rank it as her darkest, most impenitrable album. - REARMAMENT is growing on me; I love the hook of "Perfect Irony," and "'Til the Dawn Breaks" is very sad and moving. I like the sinister outlook of the character singing "Come Here." Can you imagine singing this as a lullaby to your kid?! ;-) Parental abuse, that... I find the hook of "The Issue Is" *way* too similar to the hook of "Not for Me." - At first I couldn't understand everyone's high ranking of WARPAINT. I originally placed it number four behind MWABT, Equipoise and BtC. The more I listen to it, though, the more it's rapidly growing on me. And usually the best albums are the ones that take their time enveloping your brain. "Feed the Fire" has always been a favorite, but my #2 favorite from the album would have to be a 9-way tie among the remainder of the tracks, with the exception of "Lay Me Down," which is excellent but not quite as good, and "To Live in Your World," which doesn't grab me at all. I think I like the acoustic version of "In Hiding" from RHODESONGS better than the one here. - Speaking of RHODESONGS, it's an EXCELLENT starter disc, but now that I've aquired all of Happy's albums, I'm finding little use for it. It's still essential, however, for the tribute version of "Feed the Fire" and the original version of "Summer." I still can't imagine anyone listening to the first four tracks and not falling in love with this woman's music. I remember feeling the same way the first time I popped in KaTe's "The Whole Story" and heard that voice (for the very first time) singing "Wuthering Heights" and then "Cloudbusting." I melted. - I have no major criticisms of EQUIPOISE or BUILDING THE COLOSSUS. Of EQUIPOISE, probably the two most well-known songs ("Save our Souls" and "Temporary and Eternal") are my least favorite. "Mother Sea" is rapidly becoming a favorite (and would sound almost at home on KaTe's Ninth Wave). I can't say enough about "I Say." That song is a prime example of why I listen to music at all. "Out Like a Lamb" and "He Will Come" rank very highly as well. - BUILDING THE COLOSSUS may be a pop departure for Happy, but I still love it. It's also one of her most fun albums to sing along with. It has its "low" points for me (among them "Dying" and "Big Dreams, Big Life"), but the remaining tracks more than make up for it. Any album that can pull off the line, "gonna need stronger underwear, uh-huh" without making me cringe has gotta be worth SOMETHING. ;-) - THE KEEP is proving to be a difficult album for me to get into. I like "Life on Mars," and the acoustic version of "Collective Heart" equals or surpases the original. "O Holy Night" is nice as well. As for the rest, I either can't get into it ("Flash Me Up" / "The Yes Medley") or find the original versions superior. But that's just me. It's still all great listening. - Finally, MWABT, oldest, nearest, and dearest to my heart. I still can't find a thing to criticize it. My least-favorite track of the bunch ("Winter") is still among my favorite Happy songs. And, unlike what I've heard from fellow Ectophiles, I absolutely adore "Roy," would probably rank it as my #1 favorite MWABT track, and have since watched "Bladerunner" for the first time as a result. Has anybody pointed out before that Rutger Hauer actually says the lines, "Fiery the angels fell" and "Tell me father, can you repare what you make" directly in the movie? I had to smile... Well...that's me raving once again about my "new" discovery. I've been searching for an answer to this and was wondering if anyone had one for me. In Samson's describtion of MWABT, it is mentioned that films inspired Happy's music for many songs of the album, the obvious one being "Bladerunner" as the inspiration for "Roy." Samson also mentions the film version of "Last of the Mohicans" as an inspiration, and so obviously (?) that film had something to do with "Looking Over Cliffs." However, the description also mentions that the Leonardo DiCaprio / Clare Danes version of "Romeo + Juliet" inspired a song on MWABT. My question is, which one? I had myself convinced it was "Tragic," but I can also see an argument for "If Wishes Were Horses." Anyone know for certain? I think I'll like this song even more now... On a somewhat related note, has Happy ever stated from who's POV in "The Last of the Mohicans" that "Looking Over Cliffs" is written? Sometimes the song seems to me to be a summation of the protagonist's viewpoint, but other times it seems to be coming from the point of view of the younger sister (name escapes me) who jumps off a cliff toward the end of the film after her father (and, presumably to her, her sister) have been killed and she's off to be wedded to the evil Mogwa. Lines like "the people I have loved have forever been erased" definitely fit; and the line "...and allow the eagle to fly in/Bones be inert/Let the bird take my spirit back" sounds like a metaphor for the girl hurling herself over the cliff. Happy's got a long and wonderful history of writing songs from two points of view (something she learned, perhaps, from KaTe? Go listen to "Night of the Swallow." ). Sometimes those two points of view are from within the same consciousness ("Baby Don't Go"), and sometimes they're from two consciousnesses in the same space ("Cohabitants"), and sometimes they're just two different people/things ("Life On Mars") jeff ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 5 Mar 1999 16:35:54 EST From: Riphug@aol.com Subject: Re: How many ectophiles have web pages? Wanda and her friend are going to London April 1 and any pointers from some locals would be deeply appreciated! I think they plan to head to the Cotswolds for a few days as well. Please see my responses below: > I discovered Queen through my brother Juha...he seems to have introduced > most of the bands I like to me! My brother and I share many musical discoveries with each other as well. Out of curiosity, how old is your brother Juha? The reason I ask this is because I noticed that you are a young Queen fan at 20 years old. That is why I was curious about how you heard of Queen. Most of the people that I know that really were into Queen here in the States are in their very late 20s to mid 30s. > It's actually one of these stories.....to put it short: I only exposed > to classical music when I was a kid, and it was Queen that opened up the > doors for me to a whole different world of music...I'm still very much > "tied" by my classical background, but at least I've opened up for new > influences...(there has been some interesting discussion about the role > of musical theory, which I've enjoyed very much...though in a way it > touched a sore point in me, too...) I too was primarily exposed to classical music at a young age. I was also exposed to Japanese music from when I lived there as a little boy. I didn't really hear popular music of the day until I was around 10 years old. > I might not be the fanatic fan I used to be a few years ago, but I still > greatly appreciate Queen as a wonderfully talented and very professional > pop group...no, this is _not_ the reason I'm a fan...what keeps me > hooked, quite simply, is Freddie's voice. My personal favourites of > Queen records are Queen I & II, and some others from the 70s, but I > listen to ANYTHING by Freddie and it's heaven! I better not go deeper > into that................... Queen were a very unique band. Freddie Mercury has an incredible voice. Very strong, dramatic and emotive. Brian May has always had a very distinctive guitar style. What made it even more unique was the tone that he got from his guitar. He built his guitar himself from some wood that he found at a site were a home was being torn down (if I remember correctly). I believe it was wood from an old fireplace mantel. He also wired the guitar and wrapped the pickups himself. The unique tonal quality that he gets is from that guitar. Plus he used multi-track layering of his guitar in a very interesting way. Of course they did the same thing with Freddie's vocals (and of course the rest of the boys' voices). Rodger and John were wonderful musicians too. A very powerful musical force. > Generally speaking, one of my endless sources of inspiration and wonder > is the human voice and all its applications.....very often the voice of > the lead singer and the way (s)he uses it also determines to a large > extent whether I'm going to like a certain band or not.....This may > explain a little why I enjoy the likes of Freddie, Björk, Susan McKeown > (a great big THANK YOU to ecto for this, I'm quite thrilled by Bushes > and Briars!!!), Caveman Shoestore (Amy Delio, was it?), Kate Bush, Happy > Rhodes and Erykah Badu to name but a few.....for an opposite example, it > also accounts for why I _don't_ listen to Toni Childs much, even if I > think her album The Woman's Boat is brilliant in many ways. > I also love choral/singing ensemble music (especially acappella) and > textured harmonies on pop songs (another reason for my love of Queen).
