I have a cassette tape of her talking on a radio interview mixed with the songs she is discussing...so as soon as I find it (just moved to sf)you could send me a blank tape and I'd be glad to make you one. It is quite amazing as an interview, she tells where some of her songs are coming from (and boy was I wrong!). As to her becoming a playwrite, wow, I am sure it would be a fantastic play and the orchestration!!!Can't wait!!!Being a musician too, I know she will never completely leave music,(you can't, you can try but you can't) not with a mind and voice like that, so bless her with her boredom and change and watch for that play and the soundtrack that goes along with the movie that they will make afterwards...tee hee Glad to see Neile is doing the "Jill" tape thing...as soon as I get 3 tapes I'm on my way also...again Neile, thanks for coming to see me at my last Seattle concert, that was much cool of ya. We kicked trance buttski at Sky Cries Mary, by the way a week ago. Also a song you heard in Seattle about trees that was dedicated to Julia (girl in tree for a year now!) and EarthFirs, they just asked permission to add it to their newest movie about The Headwaters. I said yes of course, and Blind will play a benefit rave for EarthFirst in Northern California last weekend in March, if there is any Ectoheads way up there. Please come and say hello. LAND OF THE BLIND will be the only live act amoungst rave and techno djs from London and stuff so we need prayers to the God of Cool on that night. To Foghorn, I too will submitt songs on cd for Ectocomp...I guess Albino Luciani from album 2 as it seems to be the "EctoFavorite" and that is 6:30 and 2nd choice is Falling up Walls @ 5:15. Unlikely. In message , Sue Fechner writes > >Received a letter from a friend in the UK the other day - he had included a news >clipping which said, "Kate Bush has amazingly scrapped the concept album she has >been working on for *five years* to start a carrer writing plays." > >Don't know how much truth is in it as it came from a Sunday tabloid and it may >even be ancient news but hey, I seem to be good at the Retro angle. It often surprises me to realise that Kate is still very much in the minds of certain press people, as they seem desperate to mention her even if she's up to nothing at all. In lieu of genuine news, they make up stories. I suppose in some ways it's flattering but Kate must be sick of it really. I know I am. The rumours seem to get sillier and sillier - maybe it's in the hope that she will either be provoked to respond and give some genuine news, or maybe in the hope that the more she's mentioned the sooner she'll bring out another album. They evidently haven't learned that Kate is extremely good at keeping her mouth firmly shut until she really does have something to offer! I think this particular rumour can be ignored, frankly. With all the hard and meticulous work Kate puts into her writing, I just can't see her scrapping an entire album's worth of material - and even if she had, I doubt she'd be discussing it with anyone who might shoot their mouth off to the press. My view is that if it doesn't come from the KBC, it isn't genuine news. I just got this CD in the mail today, and it's inspiring one of those emotional epiphany moments that's more powerful than any other "first listens" moments from even my favorites (ani, tori, tracy, sinead, etc). I am just blown away. Listening to a few of the mp3's from her website (http://pepper.by.net), I was pretty excited to get the CD ("To Johnny" is one of the best songs I've ever heard). But after listening to some of the other songs -- "Molly", "Star", even her cover of "Brother Can You Spare a Dime?" -- I'm totally blown away. She's got great piano process, and her honey-like voice is really nice, but it's her lyrics that are really something else. Anyhow, back to listening, but I've got to highly recommend this; it's one of the best CD's I've heard in far too long (you can skip the hidden track, though). And I booked her for my coffeehouse on March 25! - -- Mark Miazga e-mail: miazgama@pilot.msu.edu 580 West Akers Hall East Lansing, MI 48825 (517) 353-3321 http://www.msu.edu/~miazgama Program Coordinator of The Common Grounds Coffeehouse. Keller" Subject: Elysian Fields Just some brief remarks about Elysian Fields, whom I saw after the Susan McKeown shows Friday night. For those unfamiliar, the band is composed of a number of avant-jazz-rock musicians (Oren Bloedow, Ed Pastorini, various rhythm section members) fronted by Jennifer Charles, who has one of those voices (like Margot Timmins of Cowboy Junkies or Hope Sandoval of Mazzy Starr) that seems to get more effective the quieter she sings. The material is kinda jazz/rock, steady beat but the harmonies sliding chromatically into unusual areas (similar to bossa nova, but not exactly like). For another comparison, they did a letter-perfect version of Kurt Weill's "I'm a Stranger Here Myself" on the radio once. Anyway...I've seen them over a dozen times, and they are always a treat. This show featured only one song I'm very familiar with ("Lady in the Lake," the leadoff track of their full-length =Bleed Your Cedar=--there's also an earlier 4-song EP), and only a couple I've heard at previous shows; many of the newer ones rock a little harder than their usual. Fine show, well worth the ridiculous cattlepenlike conditions one had to suffer to get into the venue. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 01 Mar 1999 08:24:09 -0600 From: Suzanne Cerquone Subject: A&B Foghorn wrote: >>I hope you get better turnaround on your 1st order with them than mine - almost 6 months and counting. They changed their computer system last January. Notes to their customer service are autoreplied with a statement to expect delays due to high volumes. If you check your order status and an item is marked as "WAREHSnn", be patient, it should get filled, but it may take a while (expect longer than their estimates). If your item is marked "BACKORDR" consider canceling it and shopping elsewhere. Re: my 1st order 6 months ago, was held up on one backorder item, I found it elsewhere and tried to cancel that and ship pendings, upon which the whole order has gone into the void. Customer service is not responding to my queries - 2 weeks now - presumably due to high volumes. New computer system glitches I would imagine. The prices on the Jane Siberry back catalog are very good and I did manage to see a couple of those arrive. They seem to be the Canadian equivalent of Columbia's old "Nice Price" marketing ploy. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 Mar 1999 10:22:51 -0500 From: Patrick Moseley Subject: Re: Early reactions to Happy's catalogue... >MW is the epitome of her well produced, >electronic-based music and The Keep is the best representation of her >acoustic-based music, IMO. And I'd even argue that "Equipoise" comes close to that perfection, but I have a feeling I'm alone in that opinion among Ectophiles. >This statement is probably not significant of anything, but I really >don't like the covers of Rhodes I, Rhodes II and Ecto. If I didn't love Happy's music, those early covers would've detracted me as well. In fact, they did at one point. I was in a small record store in WV and the owner, knowing I was a Kate Bush fan, handed me a copy of "Equipoise." I took one look at the cover and decided against buying it. I'm also glad that the graphic design standard was raised with MWABT. It's perfectly packaged and fits the music to a tee. I can forgive the skeletal design around the sleeves of the early albums, especially considering AG was an independant label (and "Warpaint" really does have a good cover), but at least everything was legible and in order! Once they started to get a little more ambitious with the design, we were given the upside down spine and grainy rear cover of "Colossus" and the totally ILLEGIBLE spine and hard-to-decipher liner notes of "The Keep." Minor nits to accompany excellent music, though. ;-) >> 4) Right now, I'd rank the albums in the following order >>(favorite to least-favorite): >> 1. Many Worlds Are Born Tonight >> 2. "Building the Colossus" is easily Happy's most "pop" and accessible recording, which is probably why it's not as well-loved by die-hard fans. A lot less digging is necessary to get into this one. I really like it, though I must admit I was put off at first by what seemed to be a tendency toward early-80s keyboard sounds and arrangements. I got over it, though. ;-) I'm curious what "major exceptions" you see. >Here >are some of my favorites on the early CDs: "Oh The Drears", "Given In", >"I'll Let You Go", "The Wretches Gone Awry" from Rhodes I and "The >Revelation", "Under And Over The Brink", "Let Me Know Love", "Noone >Here", Beat It Out", "The Chase" on Rhodes II. Add "Ode" from Rhodes I and "Come Here" from Rhodes II, and we'd agree exactly! I happen to have the night off & would appreciate anyone who could provide me with time & exact location on the campus where she'll be performing. Also, from what I've gathered, Veda has been open to allowing fans to record her in the past. Is that true? I'm not a "stealth" taping person & was wondering the best way to attain permission to record this performance. I'd be happy to provide a DAT clone to someone on ECTO with the ability to tree the recordings around for free. Any advice appreciated. Please respond directly to me as I'm usually a few days behind on my Ecto-digest reading. And I wasn't disappointed. The Bleed Your Cedar album has grown on me more and more since buying it. Kinda haunting, with a wide dynamic range. Good sultry vocals. I hope they produce more discs soon. Sounds like they have the material for it, if I'm interpreting the description of this live set correctly. I thought I'd do a web search on them to see if I could find more gig info, unfortunately I found "Elysian Field" (a dance band from Cincinatti) and nothing more. Radioactive records was not much more help. I'd like to know more about this band's activities. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 Mar 1999 12:05:38 -0500 From: Patrick Moseley Subject: Kate Bush rumor This is copied from http://www.clubi.ie/twomey/katenews.htm "Those of you in the UK may have seen the following "news" in The Sun tabloid newpaper: "Kate Bush has amazingly scrapped the concept album she has been working on for five years to start a career writing plays." More than a few people got very confused by this "report" especially as it was also mentioned on BBC Radio 1. Robin Taylor has however received word from the Kate Bush Club in the form of a note from Lisa Bradley, Kate's friend who does such a great job running the club. Says Lisa: "Don't worry, just another silly rumour." I just ordered all five. Not much of a gamble. There is a lot of brilliant music there. Does this mean you've never heard Jane???? Is there anything on the Collections CD that I wouldn't have if I have all of Jane's other discs? neal np: This Can't Be Life - Wild Colonials ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 Mar 1999 13:10:03 -0600 (CST) From: "Joseph S. I've heard "Bound by the Beauty", "When I Was a Boy", "Maria", and "Child", but not much of the rest of it. I have a video compilation too, with some earlier stuff. I'm eagerly looking forward to getting these. - - ---------1---------1---------1---------1---------1---------1---------- |||/ Joseph Zitt ===== jzitt@humansystems.com ===== Human Systems \||| ||/ Maryland? = <*> SILENCE: The John Cage Mailing List <*> = ecto \|| |/ http://www.realtime.net/~jzitt ====== Comma: Voices of New Music \| ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 Mar 1999 13:22:34 -0600 From: "Bittner, Matthew (KTR) ~U" Subject: Speckless Sky Picked up (rescued?) TSS is a lot different, has a definite "80's feel" to it. Which isn't bad, but it's not like WIWAB. Most of the disc is great, but there are a couple of songs that aren't as good as the others - but they aren't bad either. Make sense? :-) So, it's with interest that I see A&B has some of the other Jane on sale. For example, I once played my (at the time) favorite Jane album _Bound by the Beauty_ for some friends. They told me they didn't like country music. "Country music?" I asked. I guess, but I think of it as Jane Siberry music. - -Ken ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 Mar 1999 11:43:31 -0800 From: "Neil K. To me, Jane's No Borders Here and the Speckless Sky (and to a lesser extent, the Walking) are all about my discovery of music back in my high school years. Trudging through the silent snow on the way to school, listening to Mimi on the Beach on my walkperson, fresh snowflakes whirling down. I suppose that they do sound horribly 80s (particularly the brittle production values on NBH) but I don't really hear it - I guess I'm just turning into a nostalgic old fart myself. Like a balding ageing hippie who won't listen to any music made past 1970. :) So yeah - rush out and buy them!
