I am actually in the process of recording my demo, which is up for consideration by LaFace Records, which is a thoroughly un-Ecto label... we'll see what I can do to change that, however. I consider myself basically a torch singer, but apparently torch singing doesn't encompass phat bass and tight rhymes, which are also a big part of my repertoire. But my music isn't just generic R&B at all, considering that a) I'm white, b) I'm gay, and c) I am classically-trained, which is a rarity among most contemporary radio singers and musicians. Very little actual thought seems to go into most of the music on the radio these days, and it's going to be my mission as an "Ecto" musician to do all I can to change that. And actually, if I do make it big with my music (*praying fervently*), I'm going to get some exposure to the musicians out there who so deserve it. Let's hope Sarah Slean does something similar. I know she's signed to Atlantic, which is Tori's label, so I think she'll have the opportunity to be free and self-controlling with her musical career. I actually am looking into the possibility of getting a duet with her on my debut album, which might not be too hard, considering how most modern "urban" music albums these days have at least a third of the tracks featuring other "urban" artists, mostly rappers on R&B albums and vice-versa. I think it'd be neat to merge all music scenes, which will of course take some doing, and there will always be certain scenes that will be of necessity underground, but that doesn't mean the general public can't be more aware of *good* music. I mean, Lord... we all saw what happened to poor Jewel once Patrick Leonard got his hands on her. *shaking his head* ANYHOW, I digress. Yes, I as well am an Ecto musician, and I'd be happy to send copies of my demo to other interested Ectophiles out there, should any of y'all be interested. :D John Drummond == John: Woohoo, a siren! I hope someone is dead! Brigitte: It's Tampa, of course they are. _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? Been playing a long time, work anywhere from 3-12 gigs a month. I'm kind of in retirement from 1996 when I did 178 dates with all kinds of s/s and rock bands. Had the chance to open over the years for Chris Smither, Laura Nyro, Doc Watson, Taj Mahal, Sister Sledge (don't ask). Now I run e-mail lists to take up the spare time when I'm not playing music, coaching baseball for my kids, helping my wife with her school work, doing construction on my house, or working my full time job which has nothing to do with music, baseball, or computers. The Dar-list is currently putting together a CD compilation of original tunes by dar-listers. We'll see how that comes out. I for one would be willing to work on this. The demos etc could be delivered electronically as WAV or MP3 files, or cassettes/CDs/vinyl (I don't have DAT but I'm sure others do) and transferred to WAV for CD burning. For documentation, there is a nice little program called ClickBook which can take wordprocessor files and print them as CD booklets. Recipients could offer trade (blank/recorded CDR + return postage) or equivalent cash value, which is about $5 ($3 postage + $2 for media... actually it can be done cheaper but I'll use that as a nice round figure). A CDR holds up to 74 minutes of music. I think this is a neat idea. - -----Original Message----- From: owner-ecto@smoe.org [mailto:owner-ecto@smoe.org] On Behalf Of Songbird22@aol.com Sent: Saturday, February 20, 1999 8:26 PM To: wpm@value.net Cc: ecto@smoe.org Subject: Ecto musicians hey all, > I too am curious about ectophile musicians. I for one travel a lot, and it would just hit the spot to be able to see a fellow ectophile perform while on one of my business trips to God-knows-where. I was in Denver last year for business, and one night after work I walked into a bar, only to "discover" the band Behan Johnson, who's disc has made it way, way high on my "hit parade". And discovering them was only half the fun, seeing Monica Behan and Deron Johson *play* live was a feast of the ears and eyes. Well, a feast to me at least; there were plenty of people at the venue drinking, speaking loudly, and overall being noisy. Wouldn't it have been just great for a performing Ectophile if a few of us know about his or her gig and show up? I think it would. Heck, I'd even be willing to host an "Ectophiles' tour dates" list or board if such a thing comes about... - - Bill. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Feb 1999 13:35:35 -0500 From: Heather Russell Subject: Re: Ecto musicians > > hey all, > > I too am curious about ectophile musicians. Hi all, These days I'm more of a lurker than a frequent poster, but I am a Ecto-esque singer/songwriter/pianist/woodwind player (and listed in the Ectophile's Guide to Good Music). I released a CD "just in time" last year which was bought by some Ectophiles here on the list, and I perform mostly in the Southeast. I wanted to take this opportunity to let you know some good news - this July I'll be performing in both DC and Chapel Hill NC as part of the Indiegrrl national concert tour! The tour will be on both east and west coasts, with different line-ups in each city, all *very* ectophilic. I believe someone posted Susan Court's mention of Indiegrrl a week or so ago. I'm looking forward to meeting and playing with Susan at the Chapel Hill part of the Indiegrrl tour. If you'd like more info, visit http://www.indiegrrl.com. If there is interest in doing an Ectophile compilation, I would be very interested in participating.... After we see how many people and what kind of different ideas come to the table we can decide how to go from there. So far I infer that Jessica Weiser, John Drummond and Heather Russell have demos/recordings they would like to contribute to an ecto compilation. Please correct me if this is wrong. I have myself as volunteering to burn CDRs and/or make cassettes, if that turns out to be the desired end product. Drop a line to ecto or me personally if you are interested in working on this. I will be on a business trip to Boston tonight thru Wednesday so I probably won't be feeding back much info until Wed night at the earliest. Hopefully I will be able to get to my personal email from the hotel on my work laptop, so I can keep up while there. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Feb 1999 13:22:23 -0600 From: Mark Lowry Subject: Steam (Hamam: The Turkish Bath) soundtrack Hi, When I was in NYC over the holidays, I saw a joint Turkish/Italian art film called "Steam." The original title was "Hamam: The Turkish Bath." Nice film, very sensual. A friend of mine just bought the soundtrack, and he played some of it for me. I'm going to get it this week. It has an original score by Trancendental, and performers include Agricantus, Rosie Wiederkehr, Faisal Taher and Secret. I think most of them are Middle Eastern acts. Everything I heard had female vocals, and it's an incredibly beautiful piece of work. A must for world music and/or ambient fans. Anyone know anything about these artists?
