Used to be four of them, now just three - women who each have their own music and play with other musicians and bands, but do a show together at least once a month playing on each other's stuff. > Friday March 19, 1999 8pm > w/ Marilyn & Friends / Jeff Mellin / Laurie Geltman / Becky Chase > Kendall Cafe , Cambridge, MA In addition to the songwriters circle, and Laurie Geltman, this show will start with the Becky Chace band. Becky Chace lives in Warwick, RI. We got her CD at WBRS a few months ago, I contacted her and invited her to play, and she brought the band up to WBRS for a show last week. 4 piece electric/acoustic folk rock with 3 part harmonies (on the CD there are also flutes, saxes, keyboards, etc.). Very polished, very tight, sounds great. I liked them and recommend seeing them. If you're gonna go to this Kendall Cafe show, come early, Becky Chace is on first. songwriter circle is last. The drummer from Slide (local rock band) pulled this together, I think, and he may play with Trina - he sometimes does. Laurie also tends to sit in for people's sets. The really cool thing about seeing Trina Hamlin perform in groups, especially with other musicians who have their own material, is: more harmonica! Trina is amazing on the harmonica, can play folk, blues, rock, whatever. But on her own songs, is she's singing, she can't play harmonica at the same time, so that limits how much of it she uses. When she's play with other people, she often does harmonica for entire songs (or entire sets)! np: Groovasaurus (untitled (the first)) [independent, from Somerville, MA. Currently living in NYC, originally from Minnesota, she attended Berkeley and lived in Boston for a while. Sang with various Boston musicians, including Rick Nichols and Anita Suhanin (currently lead singer of Groovasaurus) before moving to New York and joining two other people in a new band called Blue Leaves. After Blue Leaves broke up, she started on a solo career. Originally she sang and played harmonica, when she went solo she also picked up guitar. Her singing voice is extremely powerful and involving. I don't know exactly how to convey it, but maybe this anecdote does the trick: the other day I was listening to Bluesology on WERS (88.9 FM Boston) and the DJ played Coco Montoya, and remarked afterwards that "nobody sings with passion like that anymore", and my immediate reaction in my head was "obviously he hasn't seen Trina!". She would stand out of the crowd if it were just for her singing, but add to that her excellent harmonica skills, and you get a really powerful and unique blues/folk sound. Trina Hamlin opened for Eddie From Ohio at the Somerville Theatre this March, and forgot one of her harps at home, so Mike from EFO lent her one of his. Afterwards when EFO was on stage, Mike said, "I think my harmonica was crying at having to return to me. Trina played notes I didn't even know existed on it!" Trina had a tape, which is sold out. She has one CD, called "Alone", self-produced, which she is selling at her shows. She recorded it with a home DAT deck, in her Kitchen, alone :) The CD is good, but you really need to see her live to get the full effect of her performance. She connects with her audience really well, and has a personality and mannerism that remind me a lot of Susan McKeown (who she has worked with in the past). If you're in NYC, check Musi-Cal for her upcoming shows. If you're not in NYC, you can see her at the second day of the Newport Folk Festival, on August 9th. Other people performing that day at Newport include Ani Difranco, Dar Williams, Indigo Girls, and Loudon Wainwright III. They got their discs done by an Italian firm using PolyGram-PDO technology. Unfortunately, the decay set in within a year. Very sad. On the other hand, I still have CDs from 1986-1987 or thereabouts. The Japanese King and Nippon Columbia (Denon to the West) pressings are real diehards. About the only sad thing about them was that the sound quality wasn't quite on par with what everyone can do today. (I still keep these discs for two reasons: Ryuichi Sakamoto and Yukihiro Takehashi, two-thirds of YMO.) I was briefly a Laserdisc enthusiast. What killed it, however - besides the cumbersome disc size (vs. CDs or DVDs) - was 3M. They made a lot of the discs I bought. Once, their logo did appear on sleeves for Image Entertainment product, and then that stopped. Voyager also got a lot of their work done by 3M. It didn't take long to learn how costly my Laserdisc passion had become - especially when it came to a heavy interest in foreign and indie film at the time (Image's clients included Pacific Arts, Corinth, Intermedia, and Orion). It really hurt. I went straight back to VHS, no questions asked. I'm still in that camp, and it'll be a while before I buy a open DVD player. I like Mark Kelly a lot, don't get me wrong. I just >believe that Martin Orford is really strong, especially his playing on >"Ever". I can understand your opinion just by listening to "Nostalgia" from AYSC, which is just a fantastic keyboard instrumental (and they often don't work well). I think that Mark's work has become subtler, and because of that it can be amazingly emotive, if not "technically" brilliant. I would cite examples such as the Brave album and the middle keyboard section of Out Of This World from Afraid Of Sunlight (a tie with Misplaced Childhood for my favourite Marillion album, followed by Clutching at Straws and Brave). >If you like "Ever" than you will probably like "Subterranea". This is what I've heard. I guess I'll just have to check out Ever! Regards, Tim ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V5 #51 *************************
