Naturally I'm speaking only for myself but I'm perfectly happy with Ecto being just a mailing list. Mostly because this way we avoid the worst excesses of the newsgroups. The noise ratio is near-zero, and the idots who populate most newsgroups stay away. It's enough to just look at something like alt.music.alternative.female to see what I mean. Yes, there might be some interesting info there, but it's nearly burried among spam, trolls and threads like "which female performer would you like to f@*k?"... Another mailing list I'm on recently had someone complain that people were posting off-topic stuff and it was getting too hard to wade through his mailbox. Believe it or not, this was on a list that was only managing about 5 posts a day despite the fact that the artist for whom the list was created had just released his first studio album in 5 years. There are plenty of people who would look at ecto and say it's just *burstin'* with noise, because there are days with 20-30 posts, and not a single one having to do with Happy. Of course, me, I like it just the way it is, and wouldn't want ecto to change. jeff np: _Universe_, Sarah Slean ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 5 Feb 1999 09:35:28 -0500 From: Patrick Moseley Subject: Newbie Hello all! I just subscribed to the newsgroup today and wanted to say hello. I've been listening to Happy since about last October, when I spotted "Many Worlds Are Born Tonight" at a listening station in a local Borders. After listening to bits of "100 Years," "MWABT" and "Roy," I could barely put the headphones down fast enough to go buy the CD... This is the most stunning, seamless album I've heard in the longest time, and may well eventually unseat Kate Bush's "The Dreaming" as my all-time favorite album. A couple of months after discovering MWABT, I ordered "Building the Colossus" on-line, since it was Happy's last original album before MWABT. At first, I was a tad disappointed. It all sounded a bit too pop by comparison, although her voice remained captivating. I was almost resolved just to be happy with owning MWABT, but after repeating listenings, "Colossus" really started growing on me, especially the title cut, "You Never Told Me," and "Omar." Soon because of my new-found love of Happy's music, plus the fear that her older CDs may soon become unavailable, I ordered copies of "RhodeSongs" and "Equipoise." What can I say but "WOW!"? While I don't like all of "RhodeSongs," I still found much of it to be excellent -- especially "Feed the Fire," "The Wretches Gone Awry," and "If So." But then I listened to "Equipoise," and I felt almost the same feeling I had when I first listened to MWABT. Almost every cut on that CD simply blows me away, with special mention going to "Cohabitants," "He Will Come," and the goosebump-inducing "I Say," which may become my all-time favorite Happy song... Needless to say, I'm wallowing in this newfound treasure chest of music I can't believe I'd never heard about before. I have orders standing for "Warpaint" and "The Keep" right now, and needless to say Happy's responsible for my empty wallet, but I'm not complaining. I'm hoping eventually to have all of her recordings... does anyone know of the availability of her first four CDs? I'm curious if they're still available at all. Before Happy, I was a big fan of Kate Bush, Loreena McKennitt, and a few others... but Happy has made all my other CDs take a back seat for the time being... Anyway... just wanted to share the excitement of being a new Happy fan! Patrick ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 5 Feb 1999 10:24:13 -0500 (EST) From: Patrick Varker Subject: Blondie's "No Exit" To those waiting on the new Blondie "No Exit". I've been listening to this for about a week now and it's getting better each listen, to me the weakest cut on it is the first single(title track) with Coolio & other guest. It's not their strongest project ever but is IMO very good. The band and Deborah's vocals are strong. I think if you enjoyed them before you'll like this cd as well. I don't want to spoil it for anyone with a lot of details because it's not released till the 16th(or 23rd), I can't remember which. My favorite track though is a catchy tune called Maria. That was an exciting story about discovering Happy. As you've discovered, Happy has several different styles, and given time I'm sure you're going to learn to love them all! You'll find lots of Kate Bush and Loreena McKennitt fans on this list. In fact, don't be surprised if there's a lot of non-Happy Rhodes talk here. That's just the way we are. There are even (gasp) some list members who don't love Happy's music! That's okay too! I've discovered a lot of music through the ecto list, and judging from your first posting, you will too. I too am relatively new to Ecto and to Happy's wonderful music. I have been on the mailing list now for about three weeks. I am sure that you will receive a very warm welcome. The people here are kind, civilized and fun. That's not to say that the place is completely squeaky clean either. There are a few folks with the ever-so-slight bit of cynicism and sarcasm. However, this is nearly always done in an intelligent and subtle manner. Since I've been here the discussions have covered all types of music, primarily female artists. I have already discovered a number of wonderful new artists thanks to the group. There have also been discussions on film, travel and a number of other interesting topics. But most of all, and arguably by some here the most important thing, is that the discussion does come back to Happy and her music. I agree with you that MW is an outstanding release. It was my introduction to Happy's music. I find her voice to be intoxicating and her music to be genius. I too have all of the CDs that you mentioned that you already have or that you have on order. I will defer to others who have been here longer to speak to the availability and source of Happy's earlier material. I am very interested to here their comments as well, because I have been having difficulty locating Rhodes I, Rhodes II, Rearmament and Ecto. From what you have said in your post about Happy, Kate and Loreena, I am sure that you will find many kindred spirits here, myself being one of them. Just a word of warning, be prepared for your pocket book to suffer a little more from now on! ;-) If you haven't already done so, I would encourage you to check out http://www.smoe.org/ecto This is The Ecto Home Page, which has a treasure trove of information on Happy, this mailing list, Ectophiles and Ectophilic music. Many hours of happy reading (no pun intended) will await you there. Patrick, again welcome from one newby to another! Enjoy!!! My path to ectophillic music started in the 70s, the era of the 80 track tape, with such singer-songwriters as Joni Mitchell, Stevie Nicks, Rickie Lee Jones and Carole King commencing and cementing my love of poetic lyrics and beautiful vocals. When I first heard Kate Bush's "Watching You Without Me" on the radio, I had changed forever. My tastes lean toward the ethereal (e.g. Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance, Projekt roster) with stints into experimental ( Stereolab, Pram), ambient (Aphex Twin, FSOL, Vidna Obmana, Eno, Steve Roach) and trip-hop: (Lamb, Portishead). While I tend to veer away from the folky sound, nothing is set in stone -- I love Kristen Hersh's solo material, for instance.
