A CHRISTIAN BAND! Scary words. Yet, as much as the concept puts me off, my actual experience has been pretty good... I'm thinking here in particular about an Aussie band called Eat The Menu (they later changed their name to The Mercy Bell). I went to see them without knowing the first thing about them - I liked the name, and they played around the corner. What can I say? That first time I saw them remains one of my most memorable concert experiences ever. Naturally, I became a huge fan... Yet as I found out later they were considered to be .. that's right - a Christian band! It's just as well I didn't know that or I would've never gone to see them! As it happens, in time they moved away from that label completely, and even right there at the beginning they never made a big deal of their beliefs (I suspect they would've never fulfilled the criteria for your Dove Award). As for Sixpence, I never heard of them until today, but I went to their site and I found a lot of listening material there, including a 48 minutes-long RealAudio recording of their live performance. So right now I'm looking at my CD collection and thinking I can see a gap between The Sundays and 10,000 Maniacs where Sixpence would fit quite nicely :) - ------------------------------------------------------ So I got this job, and I got a life, now what am I supposed to do? - ------ http://www.zip.com.au/~afries/hall.html ------- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Feb 1999 10:10:04 -0600 From: "Bittner, Matthew (KTR) ~U" Subject: FW: Michelle Shocked in the EGTGM Whoops. The new Hedningarna disc certainly isn't continuing where the previous one left off; there's a big gap between _Karelia visa_ and _Hippjokk_. After only one complete listen, I'm not yet sure how I personally relate to the new album but it sure is different. As the name suggests, _Karelia visa_ is a collection of traditional songs from Karelia (with a couple of exceptions). This is more "hardcore traditional" than the previous Hedningarna stuff - and more acoustic and lyrics-driven (yeah, there are two female singers again), and less "rocking". My first thought was that this new style takes away from their original approach to music, but I don't know if my reaction is hasty. In any case, _Karelia visa_ is not a bad album... I think some Hedningarna fans will be disappointed, though. I believe it'll be several weeks still before the album gets released in most places. If someone on the list happends to be anxious to get an advance copy, I'd be happy to help. Juha yeah, it's n.p. again ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 03 Feb 1999 01:45:54 -0500 From: Mark Miazga Subject: Brenda Kahn's "Hunger", more Hello ecto people... I was subscribed to this list a long time ago, then unsubscribed for a summer and never re-subscribed. It's too bad; I missed out on hearing all about music I cannot afford. Anyhow, I have lots of catching up to do... I've been going through some archives, but by now my eyes hurt, so I'll just ask... Has anyone heard Brenda Kahn's latest album, "Hunger"? Just so you know my Brenda Kahn history, her first three albums -- "Goldfish Don't Talk Back," "Epiphany in Brooklyn", and "Destination Anywhere" -- are three of my favorite albums of all time. "EiB" sits at the top of all my 700+ CD's; I think she is a phenomenol songwriter and poet, and love her early stuff so much. Then, "Outside the Beauty Salon" came out a couple of years ago. It was okay, but Brenda sounded drained and like a poor Shirley Manson imitator. The grunge-rock production didn't help much. A few songs ("Heather", "I Believe in You", "Guillotine") were superb, but overall I didn't like the production or her vocals as much as her previous work. Anyhow, I started up a coffeehouse this year at my college (more on that later), and was lucky enough to actually book her! She was very gracious, and came in and did an hour-long set. She also sold her new CD, "Hunger", which she put out on her own record label, "Rocket 99." I'm wondering if anyone else has heard the CD, because I've been dying to talk with people who know her music since I got it. It's only available at shows and at her website at http://www.womanrock.com . The album's no hearwarmer. Most of the tracks deal with close friend Jeff Buckley's death. It's a very slow album, with only one track having a drum track. The lack of variation of the album is kind of its downfall, and she seems drained still. However, I thought it was more effective than her last, because some of the songs are just heart-stoppingly sad. "Sidestep the Bullet" tears my heart. "Hunger" is wrenching. Still, the lack of variety of the album brings it down, and only the drum-infused "Christopher Says" breaks up the balladry somewhat. I miss the anti-folk energy of her earlier stuff. Here's my comments on other stuff I was gliding over in the archives: New Alanis: Love it. Absolutely brilliant. I love her stream of consciousness writing, the musical backdrops. Everything. Her vocals are superb as well. New Jewel: Hate it. I miss her so much. She has written some great, great songs, but instead she releases this album of bad, bad songs. How I miss her sense of humor, her level-headed ness, and her pluck. New Ani: The most disappointing Ani I've ever heard. After six or so listens, still nothing stands out. I thought this was going to be the one album where everything comes together ("LPC" almost was there), but instead she seems drained and her lyrics are tepid. New Melissa Ferrick: The first time I've like her more than in small doses. Her other albums just haven't seemed very cohesive to me, except "+1". This one's great, and I still have trouble getting the title track out of my head. New Juliana Hatfield: "BAd Day" is one of the best songs of 1998, and the albums pretty good. Phenomenol live show (best concert of 1998). Now... back to my coffeehouse. If there are any ecto-list members in Michigan, there's a show of interest for you on Feb. 12. Lori Amey, an MSU alumni, was a talent search winner at last summer's Lilith Fair at Pine Knob. She's phenomenol, with a voice that lends itself to comparisons with Sarah McLachlan. Great stage presence, lots of charisma, and soaring vocals. Her songwriting is coming along very nicely, and a bunch of record execs are going to be at this show. More info on the coffeeshop (plus links to Lori's homepage and CD) is at http://www.msu.edu/~miazgama/coffee . You can e-mail me for more info (the coffeehouse is in East Lansing). As far as I know she's still in LA ... not sure she'll ever return to Texas to live. Every time I've seen her, she always chokes up and talks about how emotional she gets when she gets close to home. Of course, I've never seen her anywhere except in D/FW, so maybe she get's all teary-eyed elsewhere in the country. "Come a Long Way" seems to be the song that does it to her. It still hasn't found its way down deep inside, and I am not sure it will ever penetrate as deep as Dilate, but I am enjoying it and finding more in it as I listen more. I found the same thing to be true of LPC, too. I think Ani is finding more depth and layers in her writing and musical stuff (and yes that is a technical term :-). Enough of the rambling on Ani.
