The first is actually Tibetan which, at the risk of offending anyone, sounds to my un-trained ears just like Cantonese. It's called 'Voices in the sky' by Dadawa who was also responsible for 'Sister Drum' Then there is 'Spirit House' by Celestial, which is like a Hong Kong version of the group Enigma. I really love this CD. I recently also bought Faye Wong's beautifully packaged and produced CD which I love and would commend to any ectophile. Now some of you may be asking yourselves, "Why?" Well, I do like her, so I thought I'd get my feet wet by doing her page because I figure no one else will! That being said, I'd love to include a couple people's comments about her on the page, so if anyone has any feeling towards Luba's music, or any of her albums whatsoever that you'd like to submit for the Ectophile's Guide to Good Music, please e-mail me privately and I'll be glad to use them. James Blood Ulmer, Henry Threadgill ! Not typical Ecto-fodder by any means. But then Chinese Folk music and Western Folk are worlds apart as well. Chinese Folk and Opera vocal styles to most Western ears can evoke images of small animals being tortured. I find it strangely appealing. Not that image but Chinese music. ;^) Chesky records put out a disc by a local group called the Chinese Music Ensemble of New York. It's called Beloved Chinese Songs. The group is based in Chinatown and in addition to performing a few dates in the New York area each year, they operate a school for traditional instruments and styles. Three of the instruments that they use I particularly like. The Urdu (sp?) a Zither and a thing similar to the Zither. The Urdu is that whiney stringed instrument heard in the theme music for Earth the Final Conflict. The first Zither I was typing about is sort of like a harp set on it's side, the strings struck with little metal drum- stick sort of gizmos. The second Zither like instrument I was typing about is more like a Korean Komungo type of thing, sort of a Sino-Lap Guitar. A half a dozen or so strings, fretted and strummed and or plucked. Perhaps some more knowledgable Ecto-Phile could put names to the devices I'm talking about. James Blood Ulmer paid me a compliment when he wrote in a disc he signed for me that I had "Big Ears". "Big Ears" may be a requirement for deriving pleasure from Traditional Chinese music it you are not born into it. It's tunings and timings conflict with Western conventions and that's a big part of it's appeal to me. (Now I'm wishing that I had brought the Liu Sola disc to work...) BTW, I'll be hitting an incredible concert in NYC this Saturday, a benefit for Roulette: John Zorn, Meredith Monk, Stever Reich, and others.
