The former is sometimes harder becuase there are so many companies joining the fray. You really should try "New Adventures.." it is far better than "Monster" which I don't hate, but admit it is the worst post "Green" album. I'm a huge Throwing Muses fan and while I really like "Strange Angels" I am longing for her edgier days. What is "Murder, Misery, and then Goodnight" like? I didn't even see it released, when did it come out? BTW - I never actually introduced myself to the list although I've been reading for months now. My name is Spencer and i'm from Philly and a nice even 30 years old, was introdoced to the list by Suzanne Cerquone (bravegirl) because she felt that it matched my taste in Music. I listen to a lot of stuff - Shawn Colvin, Aimee Mann, Michael Penn, REM, Sarah Mclachlan, I miss Throwing Muses, Jonatha Brooke, Ani Difranco. I recently purchased Veda Hill - "Spine" and am enjoying it's quirkiness. I've never heard any other Fibbers material, though I've heard good things about them across-the-board, so I don't know if it's just on this Scarnella album or if it's all the time or if I'm just a crackbaby and am hearing things... but anyhow... I really like the fact that she sounds like Kristin... she does these interesting wailing things, and I could swear it was an experimental Kristin Hersh song I'm listening to. Crazy! So if y'all have ever noticed this "phenom" of sorts as well, comment, please, and if not, ignore me! ;D John n.p. Scarnella "Scarnella" (imagine that!) n.r. They arranged a bus trip from Delaware, which was cool. First time I've been in NYC in 25 years.. we had a few hours to kill before the show so I checked out all the CD shops I could find.. the prices were great (average new pop/rock was $7 cheaper than here) but I didn't find anything that really interested me.. Anyway, all the other times I've see Mary where solo acoustic sets, so this was my first time seeing her full band, quite a different experience. The lead guitar player, Roseanne, is pretty darned good, they just got a new bass player who did a great job even though it was his first live show with them. And Mary's vocals were stellar, as always. They played some new material from the CD they're in the process of recording, due out.. march? From the sounds of it it should be even better then her first, a bit more rockin' maybe. Anyway, if you're curious here's her webpage address again for soundclips and such: http://www.maryardencollins.com The second act we saw was Lisa Gallant Seal & The Brotherhood Dogs from somewhere in Maine I think.. they were really good, sounded a bit like a mix of Melissa Etheridge and Linda Perry.. There were 2 more acts scheduled, but we left before they came on.. luckily, since one was a Prince tribute band.. ;) (oh, now I'll probably get an earful from the Prince fans) cya - -- +-----------------------------------------------------+ + dave + + irc.dal.net #Panic_Beach female music artist chat + + http://magpage.com/~sspan/ music clips/pics/links + +-----------------------------------------------------+ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 17 Jan 1999 14:34:02 +0200 (EET) From: Juha Sorva Subject: Re: Stuffies Hello, I wrote: >n.p. Miles formed a very short-lived band called 'Vent 414' after The Wonder Stuff split up. They made an album, which I haven't gotten my hands on yet (and all my money is spent on this Ecto stuff now :-/). I also read that he was touring the States ('Miles across America', it was called) last year with one other former stuffie (I forget exactly who). Apparently, they played new songs written by Miles as well as old wonder stuff. I haven't heard of a solo album being released, though. If one did come out (or has already?), I'd certainly be interested - the Wonder Stuff just kept getting better until the end, so the new material might well be interesting. Richard ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 17 Jan 1999 16:37:53 -0500 From: Paul Blair Subject: Cowboy Junkies in NYC Friday night Friday night's Cowboy Junkies' show was terrific, despite the fact that there weren't any seats in Irving Plaza so we wound up standing from 7pm to after 10. Didn't see meth--she was lucky or unlucky depending on how much she hates standing for hours. Over the Rhine's opening was great, despite their small configuration (Karen, Linford, Jeff Bird). Last September when they came through with Cowboy Junkies, Over the Rhine had six people: besides Karen and Linford there was a backup woman vocal, a drum, a guitar and a bass player; I don't know if Jeff Bird was one of them or not. Anyway, I enjoyed them a lot even in this small configuration. I don't have any of their albums, but recognized some of the songs from last time; I think I'll be on the lookout for their CDs. Cowboy Junkies seemed really "on" and happy to be in New York City. Margo would occasionally see someone she recognized in the audience and wave--I like the way she makes you feel as if each person in the audience is important to them. Some of the songs of theirs I like best -- e.g., "Crescent Moon" and "Anniversary Song" -- were arranged in ways I didn't like as much as the recorded versions, and they didn't play "Summer of Discontent." On the other hand, other songs were real killers: I was standing pretty much right in front of the speaker on the right side, and during "Common Disaster" it was as if Michael Timmins guitar had just knocked my head to one side, reached inside my chest and started tugging on things in there. It's not often I'm able to experience such pure ecstatic pleasure in public. And the closing number, by Townes van Zandt, created this incredible musical ambiance that I wished would never stop. Anyone know what it was? Margo had some charming stories, one about staying in the "Tip O'Neill Suite" in a hotel in Boston, and about how a Canadian radio station once tried to ban their song "Misguided Angel" for encouraging Satan-worship ("So we're going to do this song now, our satanic song...since you all are from New York City, we thought you would understand...") I was hung over all day yesterday. - --Paul P.S. I just looked at the Cowboy Junkies website this morning and discovered that on one of their albums they cover a Mary Margaret O'Hara song. Small world. :-) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 17 Jan 1999 19:09:41 -0500 From: Michael Curry Subject: Sarah Slean news >Date: Sun, 17 Jan 1999 18:32:08 -0500 >To: "Sarah's Universe":; >From: "Sarah's Universe" >Subject: Sarah's Universe, Vol 2 Iss 1 > >Sarah's Universe Vol 2 Iss 1 > >Hi everyone, >hope you all had an enjoyable holidays, and from all of us here at Sarah's >Universe, we hope you have a great 1999. >We'll start off with some tour dates. > >Tour Dates: (* = new/changed) > *Sat Jan 30 > Toronto, ON > Rivoli > - solo acoustic night with Sarah Harmer (of Weeping Tile) and > Oh Susanna. > > *Fri Feb 19 > Toronto, ON > Lee's Palace > - Opening for Moxy Fruvous. > Advance tix from TicketMaster and TicketWeb. > http://www.ticketmaster.ca/ > http://www.ticketweb.com/ > >Sarah News: > There are many new articles up on the website, go checkem out! > http://www.sarahslean.com/ssxrev.htm > >Take care everyone, >-G.C. >~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ >To unsubscribe, send email to: listadmin@sarahslean.com with "Unsubscribe >Sarah Slean" in the *subject*(without the quotes) > >For all the latest Tour and Artist info, sound bites, and pictures, visit >http://www.sarahslean.com > >--To contact the webmaster, send an email to webmaster@sarahslean.com >~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V5 #22 *************************
