I listened to _The Dreaming_ today. In the car. Very loud. It had been *way* too long. Sigh. First, it was great to hear from Doug Burks and veronica again! Wonderful to see your phosphors here. Between that and catching up with my longest lost dearest high school friend, who sent me a note the other day (I never thought I'd be glad for the existence of Netfind!) and putting Kate back into the player, I'm positively drowning in nostalgia this week. And then seeing Vickie's old SiG playlists flying by here too ... yow! What year is it, again? :) Michael fonted: >I was having a quick supper at Pizzeria Uno the other night when over >the PA system I heard "Summerlong" by Emm Gryner! I wonder if that's the same satellite service that was playing stuff from _Fumbling Towards Ecstasy_ *way* before anybody latched onto Sarah McLachlan. I also wonder if that's why woj heard something from Jane Siberry's _Child_ album in Stop-n-Shop a couple days before Christmas (!). Jeffy responded: >_Through the Bitter Frost and Snow_ is indeed mostly xmas music, and >I personally find it a bit tiresome getting through the heavily >jesus-y songs. But the album is still worth owning, if only for >"Auld Lang Syne." Or the title track. Or "The Mountain King." >Or "Bold Orion." Especially those last two (and it's "The Winter King", btw :). I put both on repeat every time. >_Bushes and Briars_ is all traditional material. Veers toward world-beat >and other interesting arrangement choices, but not in the way, >say, Loreena McKennitt has gone. Enchanting. Funny, some of it really reminds me of Loreena. But you're right, "enchanting" is a good word to describe it. Wonderful stuff. >_Peter and Wendy_ is a soundtrack to a puppet show. You haven't seen the play, have you? :) Mabou Mines' _Peter And Wendy_ is to a puppet show what the NBA finals are to pick-up basketball in your driveway. It's a lush, beautiful production that *will* move you to tears by the end (and Susan's wonderful vocals are only part of the reason why - when I saw it a couple months ago at the Yale Rep, someone else was doing the singing and it was still magical). I've seen a lot of theater, and _Peter And Wendy_ is far and away the most affecting production I've ever seen. Both times. If it ever comes back to my area, I'll go see it again. Oh yeah, and What He Said about the music. :) >Finally, there's _Mighty Rain_, which was released toward the end of the >year. This one's a bit different (well, they're all different). Pretty >much just Susan and Lindsay this time, playing much bluesier stuff. A >couple of Dylan covers, some traditional tunes, and some original material. >Less celtic than her earlier albums, and sparser arrangements, often just >voice and bass or drum. I think in its own way it is still quite celtic. Some of the originals sound more traditional than the trad songs they've chosen to do. The sparse arrangements are perfect for the material. My only quibble with the album (and it's *really* minor) is that you can tell it was recorded in a matter of a few days -- Susan's voice sounds really rough in spots. (See? Minor. :) Vickie revealed: >Shoutcast was invented a week ago yesterday. Ah, so that's why I'd never heard of it before! :) Radio Free Ecto - Steve, I think that's a wonderful name for it! I've been bugging woj to figure out a way to hook up our stereo to our desktop so I can contribute to the mix. We've already proven we can stream out to Jeff's reflector at smoe from here. Not only do I have a bunch of blasts from the past from my own late, lamented radio show, but I'd like to play some of the new artists whose names have been bandied about here lately. One of the most common comments I hear from folks off-list is that there's only so much a written description can do - for people who don't have access to sound bytes or listening stations, this might be the only way for them to figure out whether or not the people we're raving about here are for them or not. This could be a really valuable service for that sort of thing! Finally, Don raved re Sarah Slean: >Well, it won't happen again; now I can listen to >it--I'm on my fourth or fifth spin tonight already--until I've memorized >every note. And believe me, folks, he will. ;) +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 07 Jan 1999 21:48:14 -0600 From: "Xenu's Sister" Subject: Back in business! That's very possible, Chris can easily set up a microphone and has been intending to do that. Perhaps sometime next week when he gets back. I'm really only in a position to play older stuff. I'm so far behind on new music that the show would be useless for that purpose. I realized that when reading all these Top 10 lists. Taking meth's list as an example, there are only 3 that I have, Happy, Tori and (not part of her actual list, I realize) Rufus. meth is in a *much* better position to do a show featuring newer material (as well as older stuff), so all this really is is getting ready for the real Queen of Radio Free Ecto, the return of Meredith Tarr's "Champaign Jam"! Now if we can get Neile to broadcast too, Ectos (who can receive) will never have to worry about being behind on what's new and cool. > > I have Happy's permission to broadcast any live > > shows I have, and I have a bunch. Mind if I babble a bit? No? OK, good... Earlier this year I added a CDR burner to my computer. I've been gradually pulling out old vinyl and converting it to CD. One band I used to enjoy immensely almost half my life ago (1980) was The Vapors. Essentially one-hit, two album wonders, I never expected to find much from them on CD. [The one hit, of course, was "Turning Japanese", covered by Liz Phair on her Juvenilia EP in '95]. Browsing CDNOW at the time revealed a few compilations, imports, a tad expensive, and none included the song "Johnny's In Love (Again)", one of my faves. [Although it predated the infamous incident, I liked to suggest to people it was about John Hinckley, the clown who shot Reagan to demonstrate his love for Jodie Foster]. Recently I was working on another LP->CDR project and thought again of the Vapors. Since I had just made the mistake of burning a CDR from an LP that turns out is in fact allegedly available on CD directly [Brian Protheroe's "Pinball", thru a Dutch company; hopefully they can provide me with all his albums on CD], I decided to carouse my expanding list of domestic/foreign web CD distributors to make sure the original Vapors albums were not now available somewhere. I quickly found a new entry in their catalog at Amazon.com, "Vaporized", which purported to be both their original albums in their entirety on one CD. Hmph. This was ordered. I've seen this kind of thing before. [Lifesong released a couple of Crack the Sky two-LPs-on-one-CD some years back; Gentle Giant's "Playing the Foole" double live album came out as a single CD, to name a few]. In most cases the release is abridged in some way, tracks are dropped, included tracks are faded out early or otherwise clipped. Surprisingly, this does not seem to be the case with Vaporized - if they shortened any tracks it was done very judiciously, I don't notice any obvious differences (no, I haven't A/B'ed the CD against the LPs yet). But what really impressed me was when I put it in the player and watched the total time display: 80:30. That is, as far as I can recollect, the longest single CD in my collection. Anyway, it's a wonderful disc, I am so pleased to hear this stuff again. Vapors Rock. Good Stuff. Not at the core of Ecto interest, I'm sure, but Ecto to me is about the vast twisted web we weave. Right? Must...control...fingers...of...babble... Thanks for reading. I'm gonna go have another drink now, OK? Later...
