It felt pretty new then (though it's hard to say... all the stories you mentioned have been around since the early parts of the tour, though you could see some of them grow from spantaneity to become part of the show.) I thought the version of CatP was great though. Dar had the backing vocals pulled way up to the front, which changed the balance of the song a lot. neal np: Pepper Acton - marrow ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 5 Jan 1999 09:53:01 -0500 From: "Rod Kratochwill" Subject: Re: Suspended In Gaffa again - on Shoutcast Date: Sun, 03 Jan 1999 22:24:36 -0700 Larry spoke: > Darn, this is one time I regret only getting > ectodigest, but I remember those > "Suspended in Gaffa" shows well, I too am for once really bummed at getting the digest. Mitch ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 05 Jan 1999 17:53:29 From: Jack Sutton Subject: more top 10's It’s very sobering to end the year thinking you’ve listened to a lot of music and then see the top 10 lists coming through, and realize how much music you never heard. However, I always make a mental note to try and search out as much as possible, the CDs that I see listed in the top 10’s here. It was tuff limiting my list to 10, but here it is: Sinead Lohan “No Mermaid” No Mermaid has become my most listened to CD of the year. I cannot find nary a flaw or imperfection anywhere within this album. To start, Sinead's voice hits the registers right in the sweet part of my audio receptors. Her voice is slightly low, beautiful, sexy, haunting with just the right tinge of Irish accent to send me into ecstasy. So she has a stellar voice, what about the lyrics? Let me tell you about the lyrics. I can't remember the last time so many lyrical lines on an album just stopped me dead, asking huh, run that by me again. Here's some examples, From No Mermaid, "I said I'd rather be the color of pleasure, than watch like you from under the thumb" and "you said we might get into red flag danger and I am alone when I'm not with you". From People and Tables "Waiting for nothing confuses the mind, letting go pieces for no one to find, the smell from the afternoon sits in the air, Oh, for a man with no back to his chair." Also from Diving To Be Deeper, "This century will fall down, was always thought it was a queen but it's just a crown, we though she was caught up in a web but she's the tangle and she went flying through the air he fell off at an angle"...and more "and he only took her money 'cause he thought that he could never really keep her."...huh?... cool! Every song is full of lyrics that are just not expected, keeps you off balance, you tend to hit the back button on your CD player until you've memorized all these little gems. Tanita Tikaram "Cappuccino Songs" Tanita Tikaram, the woman with the most perfect voice, has been re-made and re-defined by her new record company, Mother Records. Her latest CD "Cappuccino Songs" was released in Europe about July of 98, and is due for US distribution in January 99, although a Japanese Import is available in some US stores which includes two bonus tracks. Mother records seems to be doing a good job in European promotion of this CD and I see their goal as presenting Tanita as more up beat, poppy, and sexy, and less melancholy and dark. I think they have done a commendable job, but am happy that the essential Tanita comes shining through despite the honest attempt to fix something that ain't broke. Cappuccino Songs is an outstanding collection of songs of the same quality as "Ancient Heart" which rocketed the young 18 year old into world wide prominence. Tanita now has 6 albums to her credit, and despite sales figures, they are all equally magnificent, and to me, I could not rate them in any kind of order, as I think Tanita is only capable of perfection. With a voice like hers, what else is possible? Rachael Sage “Smashing the Serene” Rachael Sage has said that Ani DiFranco and others have been a big influence in her musical career. When I first heard "Smashing The Serene", I thought of Ani, but I also heard someone that has the talent , enthusiasm, creativity and soul to mark out a distinct place of her own. Sometimes when a artist gets labeled as another so and so, or the second so and so, it's difficult not only for the artist, but also the fans of the so and so artist. This seems to be the trend so far in the early career of Rachael Sage with respect to Ani DiFranco. I was a huge Dylan fan in the early days, and so many new artists were labeled the second Dylan, or the new Dylan. I resented the comparisons and sometimes would refuse to listen to the new "Dylan". Bruce Springsteen (for some still unexplainable reason to me) was labeled the new Dylan. I would not listen to him, or extend any credit to him. Later I realized there can not be a second Dylan or a second anyone. Bruce Spingsteen was not the second Dylan, he was Bruce Springsteen, a unique, talented artist forging his own path. It's "standing on the shoulders of giants" that launch people to even greater heights. However, it takes a certain drive, determination, and talent to even make it to the giant's shoulders. To me Rachael Sage has all those qualities and more. When I first heard her, Ani flashed in my mind, and I would have lost interest pretty quick if I sensed just a shallow copy, but that was not the case. Rachael Sage will forge a distinct place of her own in the musical annals because she has all the ingredients for that kind of success. Freight Hoppers “Where'd You Come From, Where'd DYou Go”(1997) “Waiting On The Gravy Train”(1998) I first saw the Freight Hoppers at the Fathers Day Bluegrass Festival in Grass Valley California in 1998. They were the highlight of the festival for me and the best new high energy band I've discovered since Laura Love. They play old-time music in the spirit of the Skillet Lickers, Uncle Dave Macom, and others of the 30's and 40's. The wonder to me is how four people who fit together like a puzzle could have found each other. It's one of the most remarkable music matches I have seen. Their two CDs listed above came out between 1997-1998. They also have a Video put out by Homespun "Live At The Bearsville Barn" which includes 5 or 6 songs not on either of the two CDs plus some great conversation about styles and technique. Annie Gallup “Courage My Love” I've heard several other people mention Annie Gallup's new album Courage My Love released by Prime CD. I don't remember what they said, except they liked it, really liked it, I can only second that emotion. I expected something wonderful, being familiar with her previous work, but this is beyond wonderful, it's a treasure. I feel like a little kid when I listen to Annie's story telling songs, I want more, I don't want to go to bed, I just want to listen all night. Her story telling and character insight are cleaver, amusing, and down right enjoyable. Ashley Maher “The Blessed Rain” The Blessed Rain is a uplifting spiritual good feeling gift, given and received at the same time, the perfect human exchange. Every cut gives me the feeling of great depth requiring many careful listens. It's like you can listen in a casual way and have the music sweep around and through you, but something inside says, I need to drink in this splendor slowly and deeply. I find it hard to try to technically explain music as I don't understand much of that anyhow. I can only talk about feelings from the music and this feels real good. Jessie Mae Hemphill "She Wolf" "Feeling Good" Jessie Mae is from Como Mississippi and fairly obscure but did develop a small cult following and enjoyed some success in Europe where some of her material was released on vinyl Recently, that album "She Wolf" and another "Feeling Good" were released in the US on CD. These two CDs are some of the most good feeling infectious music I've ever heard. She does her own version of "Mystery Train" and although I've probably heard 50 different people do this song, she blows them all away. She's haunting, sexy, and full of the raw energy only someone with the blues in their blood can be. If you like unpretentious basic blues done with honesty, feeling, and spirit, you'll like her stuff. I compare her with Fred McDowell, Sun House, and Robert Johnson, and on a more contemporary level, John Hammond and Rory Block. Sadly, because of a stroke, these two CDs are all we will ever hear of this wonderful artist. Laura Love "Shum Ticky" Laura Love is one of those performers of such high energy that studio albums kinda pale with respect to a live performance. However, "Shum Ticky" comes close to capturing some of the magic of Laura love and her band. Laura stays true to her self described Afro-Celtic description and puts together a fine collection of new and previously released material. . Laurie Freelove "The Invisible Invisible" This is a limited edition release put out on CDR and includes some new material as well as re-makes of some of the songs that were released on "Songs From The Nine Line" and other previous Laurie Albums. "Songs From The Nine Line" was one of my 1996 top ten, and this is like a fresh look at the spirit of that work with a new slant on the songs that made it so wonderful and some new gems to ponder as well. Susan McKeown “Bushes And Briars” “Through The Bitter Frost And Snow” When I first hear Susan on "Bones" I was hooked and real anxious to hear more. It seemed like forever before she put out another album, but in the last approximately 14-16 months she has gone into an artistic frenzy putting out "Through The Bitter Frost And Snow" (late 97 I think), "Bushes And Briars" and "Mighty Rain" which sadly I have not hear yet, but am sure it would be included in my top 10 list. "Through The Bitter Frost And Snow" is my December album of choice and spends much time in my CD player pumping me up for my favorite time of year, the "Winter King". Likewise, "Bushes And Briars" reeves up the Celtic traditional part of me as only Susan Mckeown's special flare can do. Mike prodded: > They didn't play it at the show last Friday in Northampton (a >show I've been lazily waiting for Meredith to write something about). Eeep, I just realized I forgot to post my review to ecto! I sent it to the Nields list though. Slap me. I've since found out that the reason Cry^3 haven't been doing the Nields cover lately is because with Lucy Kaplansky suffering from a cold (and if she's got what I've got, I'm even more impressed by the fact that she's still performing than I was before), the song is completely impossible for her to do. Apparently it's a stretch for her even when she's feeling 100%. Still, with the original artists in the audience, you'd think they could've figured out a way to fit it in without involving Lucy's larynx. Sigh. So here's my review: woj, Mike, JeffW and I saw Cry Cry Cry at the Calvin Theater in Northampton on New Year's night. In a nutshell, the show was really good. :) The openers, Buddy and Julie Miller were crashingly boring, except for the two songs they did that they said Julie had written. One I recognized from Emmylou Harris' _Wrecking Ball_ album, and the other was in a similar vein. Julie reminded me of what would happen if Shawn Colvin and Rickie Lee Jones found themselves in Stevie Nicks' body. Cry Cry Cry themselves were great. Lucy Kaplansky and Richard Shindell both were under the weather, Lucy a bit more worse off than Richard - but she soldiered on, and stated that she wasn't nearly as worried about her voice as the state of her hair. :) I kind of liked her voice this way - it's usually too nasal for me, but instead it was just husky and deep. Dar Williams was in fine voice, and she looked ravishing in her purple gown (she remarked that she's found her "inner bombshell" - hah). Lucy was making wonderfully snarky comments all evening, and Dar was just as flaky as ever. (They related the exchange the first time Dar heard "Ten Year Night", at which point Lucy rejoindered, "You should know, in *that* dress." Ouch! So for the rest of the night Dar was doing "slutty walks" all over the stage. It was a stitch.) Through all of this poor Richard looked a bit out of his league at times, but I'm sure he's able to hold his own with the two women he's been traveling with for the past several weeks. The highlight of the evening was Dar strapping on one of Billy Masters' electric guitars (the baby blue one) for one song. Now that was a sight I never thought I'd see. :) The surprise guest of the evening was Chris Smither, who came out in the middle of the set and did one song on his own, then another with Cry^3 providing backup vocals. I'm not a fan of his by any stretch, but there were definitely folks in the audience really getting into his appearance. For the encore, after a rousing version of "The Christians And The Pagans" he came back onstage along with the Millers and everyone did Johnny Cash's "Cry Cry Cry". Richard's dead-on imitation of Johnny Cash when singing his verse was the highlight of that tune. :) Everyone called the trio back for an unplanned second encore, so we were treated to Richard's "The Next Best Western" to round out the night. All in all it was a great, show, but I couldn't believe that they blew off the Nields (note: at the time I didn't know the reason why). They were in Noho, and made a point of mentioning the songs that had been written by local musicians (Cliff Eberhardt and Jim Armenti), and Katryna and Nerissa were in the audience, and the *only* song from the album they *didn't* perform was "I Know What Kind Of Love This Is". I kept waiting for it ... there were two microphones set up on the side of the stage for the entire show, but apparently not for the reason I'd hoped. Sigh. +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 5 Jan 1999 21:35:44 -0500 From: "Robert Lovejoy" Subject: Message encoding - sorry, but can anyone help?
