Not to date myself (and if I did, would that make me an hermaphrodite?), but I was listening to Lesly Gore back when most of you were twinkles in your father's eyes. I always thought the music she recorded was better written than most of what was around. I still get off on "She's A Fool". I guess she was as close to ecto music as the early sixties got! The show was so long (3 hours) because it was the Saturday night of Daylight Savings Time. My show ran from 10pm to midnight. At that time, the station shut down from midnight to 6am, so Chris and I almost always had the whole radio station to ourselves. We had been told to turn all the clocks back an hour at midnight. Chris changed the clock in the studio while I was on the air and...Well, what do you know? It was only 11:00pm! I still had a whole hour left of my show! :-) (We take advantage of life's little quirks whenever possible) So that's why the last hour isn't as cohesive as the first 2, I was winging it and having a ball doing it. Burka" Subject: Cry Cry Cry in DC Just back from the Cry Cry Cry show (hey, people, no commas! ;-) at the Birchmere. I want to call it the New Birchmere, but really, it's been around a for a while, and I just hadn't gotten around to seeing the new club. It's huge. Way huge. The old club reminded me of the Bottom Line, both in layout and size. I wouldn't even hazard a guess at how many the new theater holds.and that's only part of the club. But despite the size and the fact that, yes, they serve beer, the audience was quiet and respectful. And as a smoke-free environment, how can I not be happy? Even better, the acoustics were perfectly satisfactory; the vocals all sounded great, and really, that's why you'd want to see Cry Cry Cry, right? The opening act on this mini-leg was Buddy and Julie Miller, she who wrote "By Way of Sorrow," which Richard described as the one happy Cry Cry Cry song., despite the ironic title. The Millers were interesting and enjoyable - much more bearable than if another CCC songwriter had opened (no names mentioned, but his initials are Ron Sexsmith). Julie Miller has a very odd stage presence, and her voice (and her posture, to some extent) made me think often of Lisa Germano, though I'm not sure I could tell you why. A little twangy, but worth hearing. Cry Cry Cry sounded great, and performed every song from the album except one of my faves, their cover of the Nields' "I Know What Kind of Love This Is." We did get some treats, though. During the sub-set in which they played solo songs, they introduced Dar's "If You Wrote Me" by saying that it was the first time they'd performed it together on stage as a trio. Lovely, of course. "Auld Lang Syne" would have been amazing if I were not so utterly besotted with Susan McKeown's take on it; the Cry Cry Cry folks are too pretty about it, and don't achieve the intensity that Susan pours into it. "Christians and the Pagans" was another pleasant surprise. I don't know how often they've been playing it; I do know it wasn't on last night's set list, from a friend who was at both shows. Also different last night was replacing IYWM with "February." A great show. Lots of witty banter from and between the principals. Particularly amusing was Lucy telling the story of the first time she rehearsed "Ten Year Night" with Dar, when Dar asked, "Lucy is that a true story?" "Yes." "Lucy, you're a slut!" At which point Dar herself cut in, "Well I meant it as a bonding thing." Also humorous was Richard explaining, after Dar referred to the three of them as "harmony whores," that she had used that term in an online chat, at which point they received a stern reprimand about avoiding such language on a family-oriented site. Feh. Highly recommended if you can still get to a remaining date. Oh, yes, during the intro to "Auld Lang Syne," Dar mentioned that Pete and Maura Kennedy were in the audience, and dedicated it to them, along with some other friends of hers who were present. Okay, let's see if I can do this.partially in order, partially not. As usual with my set lists, the beginning and end are accurate, it's the middle where I get confused. Wah! I downloaded the new MacAmp and can't figure out for the life of me how to get it to open a site address. It only seems to be able to open downloaded files. This is one of those rare times when it would be better to have a PC. Except then I would have had to buy and configure a sound card and all that rather than have it built in already...
