Just for you Bill! :-) Thanks for listening! Some of the problems are more to do with *that night* rather than any current computer problems. First, the reception... since Chris and I were both at the studio, he'd set up the VCR so that it would record from the radio tuner. I'd just set the VCR to start recording and wouldn't know the result until I got home. Those scritchys at the beginning are definitely reception problems. Second, as I mentioned earlier, some people were working on the transmitter and there are a few periods of silence when they cut me off. I always came back within a few seconds. We finally talked them into working on the transmitter some other time. Enjoy! Thanks! Maybe this technology, Shoutcast, will be a good excuse for you to slap on a sound card and speakers. I've got lots of plans up my sleeve. There's always my old radio shows, there's compilations like the Femme series that was once a part of the Tape Dubbing Project, there's Happy Gift/Birthday Projects (if no one objects, and it's ok with Mitch), there's the possibility of new radio shows, and with (hopefully) Happy's permission, old live shows, such as the 1991 University Museum Auditorium (Philly) show, the 1996 Tin Angel shows, Bottom Line shows and more. Of course, I'm going me I my, when there are lots of other Ectophiles (hopefully woj and meth will be among the first) who will have their own stuff to broadcast. Finally, a quick, cheap and easy way to hear snippets from artists that get talked about here all the time. > Too bad we don't have a dubbing project anymore, cause I Doug is sorely missed, and not just because he ran the Dubbing Project. Has anyone heard from him recently, or even not so recently? > didn't buy enough of your compilation tapes when I had the chance. I kinda feel the need to clarify this for anyone who came along after the TDP ceased to exist. I wouldn't want anyone to think that there was a charge for tapes. So, for those who weren't around, here's how it worked. A very wonderful person named Doug Burks kept a stash of tapes sent to him by Ectophiles. These tapes ranged from live Happy shows to compilations and live shows by other artists. They never were entire albums by artists. Someone would send Doug either a blank tape or the money to buy a blank tape, and postage. Doug would dub off whatever the person wanted, then send it back. The person submitting a tape never got a dime, and Doug never got a dime. It was purely a volunteer effort to spread music among Ectophiles. As Ecto grew, it finally got to be too much for Doug to handle, and he had other things going on in his life, so he had to abandon the Tape Dubbing Project. It sure was nice while it lasted though. Although I agree that having more positive role models would help improve social acceptance of gays and lesbians, I think that someone who doesn't want to be a role model isn't going to be a good role model. However, my perspective on the matter comes from being disabled. The disabled are a lot easier to pick out in a crowd and societal attitudes towards the disabled are quite a bit different than they are towards gays and lesbians, but there are people who claim that one disabled person is supposed to represent all the others in his or her dealings with society, and therefore any disabled person is supposed to be a role model for others. But ultimately I don't think that's fair to the group as a whole. If the real intent is for the disabled or gays and lesbians to be treated fairly and equally in society, then it should be up to individuals to decide how much of a role they want to play in society, rather than there being an imposed expectation that they should behave differently (including the expectation that they should behave better or more nobly than others) merely because they fall into a particular category. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Jan 1999 14:44:50 -0600 (CST) From: "Joseph S. It reminded me that I'd been meaning to buy it. Comments from anyone who already has it would be most appreciated. The very names - Kate and Anna McGarrigle - conjure up a memory for me. Of being 12 in 1975 and playing Linda Ronstadt's 'Heart Like a Wheel' album to death and thinking that the song "Heart Like A Wheel" was just the most beautiful thing I'd ever heard. Even at that age I paid attention to songwriting credits, and I wondered who these mysterious McGarrigle Sisters were. Through the years I've MEANT to buy some of their early stuff, but it was never high enough on my musical priority list and I never did. So I just now went to MusicBoulevard.com to check out some audio clips. Here is where the "dumb question" part comes in. Why does it seem I have to save the MPEG file on my hard drive in order to listen to it? Can't I just listen to it without saving it? What am I doing wrong? (I can't listen to the RealAudio file because I get a message telling me I must first upgrade my RealAudio Player and I'm not allowed to do that on my computer here at work.) From http://www.pathfinder.com/people/where_now/9804/gore.html ABC plans to use "You Don't Own Me" as the theme for a 1999 special about the women's movement. But Gore points out that the song was written by two males, John Madera and David White, who first played the song on guitar for her in a resort cabana next to a swimming pool. "At that time," Gore says, "I wasn't writing music. I never had any notion to do that back then." ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 04 Jan 1999 17:09:39 +0000 From: Birdie Subject: Re: Quick! I didn't buy as many albums as I have the previous two years, though I still did acquire over 100 CDs. I was bowled over by very few albums, and disappointed in many. Also got a lot of albums that were released in previous years. So, to come up with top 10 or so is difficult, but here it goes. 1. Happy Rhodes - Many Worlds are Born Tonight Well, obviously. I have to say this is probably the album I played most this year. I was a little surprised at how electronic it was, and on first listen, a little disappointed in the lyrics-- they seemed a little repetitive and not as "interior" as Happy's previous efforts., (Happy has always been an artist whose music has the feel of wrapping oneself up in a warm blanket on a cold winter day) but after a few listens this album really grew on me. 2. Imogen Heap - I Megaphone This album didn't really come alive for me until after seeing Imogen play live. That proved to me that Imogen is no studio darling--she's a damn good musician. With just a piano and her voice she put on a rocking good show, and really showed off how good the songs on the album really are--even without all the weird little effects. 3. Tori Amos - Songs from A Choirgirl Hotel Another album that took a few spins to get into, but once I did I loved it. 4. Cry, Cry, Cry - Cry, Cry, Cry This album didn't wow me as much as I thought it would. But then, Richard Shindell's albums are always perfectly crafted and never overdone or showy. That's exactly how this album is. Lots of great songs and lots of great harmonies. 5. Jewel - Spirit Yep, the lyrics are trite and banal and almost offensively optimistic, but it's Jewel and I still like it. Though it's definitely not the great album that she has the potential to create. This album was held together by the "Spirit" theme--here's hoping someday she'll release it's antithesis--an album of dark, deep, sorrowful songs--songs about psychotic hitchhikers, songs about affairs, and lost souls. Lord knows she has the material and the ability. 6. Lisa Gerrard and Pieter Bourke - Duality This Lisa album is pretty hard to distinguish from her last. Which makes it a beatiful album overall with a couple of stunning tracks (but none quite compare to The Mirror Pool's Sanvean). 7. Marianne Faithfull - A Perfect Stranger This double CD compilation album of her hits during the Island years is an excellent compilation featuring some great songs. Much better than the previous single album "best of", though all those tracks are included here as well. 8. Carmel - Live at Ronnie Scott's Just picked this album up over Christmas vacation. Wow--what a voice and a live album really shows it off. Carmel's efforts have been spotty over the years. Loved parts of the first album, "The Drum is Everything", but "The Falling" did nothing for me.Then I found "Set Me Free" and was blown away. Haven't been able to track down her other albums, "Everybody's Got a Little...Soul", "Good News", and "World's Gon' Crazy" but am quite pleased with this album--a live album of almost all new tracks (actually I think all of them are new, other than an Aretha Franklin cover.) If anyone knows how I can get a hold of the albums I'm missing let me know. 9. Lanie Kazan - In the Groove A great album from the Mercedes Rheul look-alike actress/singer. Great album for late nights. Smooth, smooth, smooth. Some great songs, even an incredible cover of The Carpenter's Song for You. 10. The Nields - Play I never really loved Gotta Get Over Greta, but the first three tracks on this album made me a believer in their studio recordings. Too bad the rest of the album isn't as solid. Best Concerts of the Year: 1. Imogen Heap/Heather Nova @ Martini Ranch, Scottsdale, AZ Wow--great performances from both artists and best of all the show was free! 2. Holly Cole @ Nita's Hideaway, Tempe, AZ (w/ Kim Fox) Holly's first appearance in Arizona--quite a good show despite the sparse attendance. But you gotta love it when you can get to a show half an hour before showtime and get a front row center seat (plus I think tix were only $5). 3. Cry, Cry, Cry - School for the Deaf and Blind, Tuscon, AZ Dar, Richard, and Lucy all on one stage. Opening night of the tour. Pure magic. 4. Betty Buckley @ Gammadge Auditorium, Tempe, AZ My favorite Broadway singer. Quite a show from the woman with quite a voice. 5. The Creatures - Maritime Hall, San Francisco, CA Siouxsie lives! Worst Concert of the Year; Boston Pops, America West Arena, Phoenix, AZ Never go see an orchestra at a Sports Arena. What were they thinking?! I was so disgusted with the acoustics and the advertising in the venue that I was almost glad I'd missed the Tori show that was held at the same place. Not my cup of tea in the first place, but the venue really ruined the show. Did discover a great baritone singer--Jubilant Sykes, who sings a mixture of gospel, blues, and jazz. All I could think was wow--if he and Diamanda Galas ever got together! Musical Finds of the Year (Previously released artists I just discovered) Haris Alexiou - Wow! Di Efchon is all I've been able to find and I must say it has spent more time in my CD player than any other international artist. Well worth tracking down for any female vocalist /world music fans. And the lyrics, at least in translation, are gorgeous too. I'm quite impressed and wanting to find more! June Tabor - Wow! Where have I been? Disappointments: Lucinda Williams - Car Wheels on a Gravel Road and Rufus Wainwright --despite the critical acclaim these albums just don't do much for me. I like Lucinda's Passionate Kisses album better--this one just seemed like she was trying to make a serious album--and to me lacks spontanaiety and warmth. Rufus Wainwright--sorry, but I'm in the camp who just finds his voice irritating, his lyrics trite and his music only mildly interesting. Susan Court was also a disappointment for me. Neile has turned me onto a lot of great music, and I usually agree with her opinion, and while this album isn't bad, it just doesn't do much at all for me. I like a couple of the more traditional folksy tunes, but the rest just reminds me of some early eighties synth pop, and her voice sounds nothing like Kate Bush to me. Still need to track down: All those obscure artists that Neile continually brings up! (Pepper Acton, Cat Power, Margot O'Breslin, Kathleen Yearwood's latest), Margot Smith, etc. Looking forward to in 1999: Lucy Kaplansky - Ten Year Night Ann Hampton Callaway's new one Blondie - No Exit Here's hoping for new releases from (I have no reason to believe that any of these will actually happen): Alison Moyet, Annie Lennox, Maria McKee, Lone Justice, and dare I say Kate Bush (who, rumor has it, a fairly reliable source, has been busy with an entirely different type of creation as of late, but I was sworn to secrecy and don't know if it's true or not. Regardless, it's not a new album) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 04 Jan 1999 20:42:15 -0600 From: "Xenu's Sister" Subject: Halloween show (Re: Back on the air... I can't find my airplane stub right now, but the trip had to have been around that timeframe. Maybe earlier, maybe later-now I can't stand it- I have to find that stub! :-) Knowing you, you probably even at that time had 3 sets of those tapes! :) > I finally had to take a rest and let Ecto > play to the end, which made for good timing because > that's when I had to sign off. Boy, if they had been the same cassettes, I take blame for some of that playing of the _Ecto_ cassette to death! :-) As well as my old sentimental fave _Rearmament_. I played that one as much as _Ecto_, easily, that trip. But _Ecto_ kicked my ass; I now must confess that I rewound that tape back to "To Be E. Mortal" so many, many times. =^{ > and I didn't get > a chance to buy a new one before the show.
