It was magic. Lyris' violin work made my fingers hurt just watchin. Mila's powerful vocals sailed out, ripping through the crowd. She even managed to stun to silence the three obnoxious drunks at her feet. Got the yule juices flowing. The, umm, "frank exchange of ideas" on love-hounds following Vickie's early Happyvangelizing attempts there is exactly what encouraged folks to create and migrate to the ectoplasm list (now ecto) in the first place. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Dec 1998 14:40:51 -0800 From: Eponine Subject: John Lennon Anthology OK, maybe not really an "Ecto" artist, but I love 'im and he's CERTAINLY influenced a lot of the Ecto artists. Does anyone have the 4-CD John Lennon Anthology boxed set? Is it really worth $73? (A hard question to answer, to be sure. I guess for a HUGE JL fan [like me], it might be worth it.) Thanx, Eponine ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Dec 1998 15:45:13 -0500 From: "Craig Gidney" Subject: Vas The mysterious female chant/singing, resonant sitars, and Eastern ambience of Vas's new cd _Offerings_ remind one strongly of Dead Can Dance/Lisa Gerard solo work. Even the titles are similar: made-up words, esoteric references to myth, (e.g. Mist-Weaving; The Temple of the Maiden). This new work is even more expansive than their last outing, _Sunyata_. The chanteuse's voice is even fuller than before, and they are more reliant on harmonic instruments, whereas before, it was basically drums and voice. Ali Azam's Iranian dulcimer (the santour) fiercer and more percussive on this album as well. This cd has the same mystic/escapist feel any 4AD lp, sans the gothic overcast. One of the best world/ethereal cds of the year. n.r. _When Christ and His Saints Slept_ Sharon Kay Penman ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Dec 1998 22:44:45 -0500 From: Richard Subject: Re: Love-hounds & Milla (was Re: more Happy stuff plus) Steve VanDevender wrote: > > FAMarcus@aol.com writes: > > I think someone should leak the information to the love hounds > > what the guys at ecto are saying about them. Yes. Dysfunctional is not Ecto, which is exactly why I've hung here for three years after 5 measly days at Love-Hounds. Let's keep a good thing, yes? Richard n.p. Maybe not specifically an Ectopian, but if I was asked to name a music artist whose schtick led to what we now call Ecto, John Lennon would be way high on my list of responses... No question, his poetry, his musicianship, his sense of the ethereal (and of the absurd) and his *art* set the tone for the people we celebrate on this list. Richard n.p. Okay, is this where I admit that I own neither Lennon nor Beatles albums? This is, of course, an oversight of (a) laziness and (b) an inability to think of things I ought to have in my collection when I can't find the things I'd intended to buy in the first place. That said, a few years ago, I was hanging out with a couple of friends, both music lovers, and one an occasional ectophile. Somehow, the topic of the Beatles came up, and two of us started discussing various albums and listing our favorites. The third was utterly amazed that we could discuss the band, let along profess to a favorite album by them. We, in turn, we shocked that he himself was so uneducated, or perhaps uncaring. All in all, a decidedly odd afternoon. jeff - -- |Jeffrey C. Of the songs that Rupert Hine produced, Milla was credited as being the only songwriter, with one exception: "You Did It All Before", which was co-written by her bandmate Chris Brenner. Of the songs that Feldman and Holden produced, they received co-songwriting credit on ALL of them, except "In A Glade". -- Mike ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Dec 1998 23:42:27 -0600 From: Carolyn Andre Subject: Sarah on ATT commercial? Tonight while watching socially unredeeming cable television, the song & vocals on an ATT Long Distance/American Red Cross for the holidays commercial caught my attention. "remember me" chorus. Sounded like it either was Sarah McLachlan or was trying to sound like her. Did I miss any comments about it on here?
