Yay! Another Jeff Noon fan. Check Amazon UK (http://www.amazon.co.uk). Since he's British, a lot of his stuff lags behind here in the states. I picked up _Nymphomation_ while I was in London, but I got his newest short story collection, _Pixel Juice_, from Amazon UK. > So what's the scoop on _Nymphomation_? As usual, it's about Manchester in the not-too-distant future. This time, everyone is obsessed with a lottery called Domino Bones. A lot of the same ideas from _Vurt_ and _Pollen_ make their way into the story and I'm noticing a lot more word play this time around, probably as a result of _Automated Alice_. I haven't read enough yet to form an opinion, but thus far the story fits nicely into Jeff Noon's psychedelic and always entertaining universe. Luck. Talent. Divine intervention. Some combination of the above. Answer 3) Mostly it just happened. Again, ask You Know Who. He tried to start a KaTe mailing list with the feel of ecto -- a feel he intended to maintain through fascistic moderation. Ha. ecto is chaotic and anarchic in its subject matter, and has been from the first -- this is primarily, in my opinion, what's kept us going as we have -- the weird side threads on various authors (who would have dared to post something like my follow up on Jeff Noon to a list like l-h/rmg?), movies, whatever. We never had those long spells between albums (last month was the 5th birthday of TRS!) with nothing to talk about, because even when the list was slow, it was a group of people who enjoyed a lot of the same things and had somewhere to discuss them. ecto is *so* cool. ;-) jeff np: _Festival of Lights_ / various - -- |Jeffrey C. I was just about to write something about seasonal music... :-) First of all, some general remarks and questions. I noticed a new (?) seasonal music album by Shawn Colvin called "Holiday Songs & Lullabies" in the local store. I'm not much of a fan of Shawn myself, and what I've heard of this album didn't do much for me either, but perhaps some of you are interested. It's fairly traditional, with songs like 'Silent Night', 'In The Bleak Mid-Winter' and 'Christmas Time Is Here'. CDNow has it on their site, with some sound samples, but to me it seems quite expensive at nearly $18.-. (Expensive for US meassures, that is. It's still cheap for Dutch standards.) Also in the seasonal section there was Jane Siberry's "Child". I haven't listened to that one yet, what are your opinions on this album? (How) does it compare to for example "Teenager"? Another new seasonal album that I quite liked musically was "A Celtic Christmas" (?? Not sure of the title) by Eden's Bridge, though the lyrics are very much Christian (a bit too much so for me personally). The music is very melodic, very peaceful, and it could be compared to Enya's quietest moments. The female singer has a lovely voice. Just thought I'd mention it. Anyway, just a couple of days ago I made myself a 90 minutes sampler tape with Ectophilic seasonal and Christmas music. Some of the tracks have already been mentioned been here, but maybe you find some new suggestions. I also included where I took the tracks from. Side A. - - Kate Bush : December will be magic again (from This womans work 1) - - Happy Rhodes : O holy night (from The Keep) - - Tori Amos : Purple people (Christmas in space) (from Spark cd single) - - Tori Amos : Have yourself a merry little Christmas (from the same) - - Heather Nova : Winter blue (from Siren) - - Virginia Astley : Melt the snow (instrumental) (from From gardens where we feel secure [cd release]) - - Bel Canto : White out conditions (from White out conditions) - - Tori Amos : Winter (from Little Earthquakes) - - Cocteau Twins : Winter wonderland (from Snow cd single) - - Enya : Oiche chiun (from a promo cd single Marble Halls) - - Happy Rhodes : Winter (from Many worlds are born tonight) Side B. - - Loreena McKennitt : God rest ye merry gentlemen (from A Winter's Garden) - - Loreena McKennitt : Good king Wencelas (from the same) - - Tori Amos : Little drummer boy (from More Pink) - - Sojourn [AKA Grey Eye Glances] : Snow (from Further on...) - - Susan McKeown & Lindsey Horner : When All the Songs Were Sad (from Through the Bitter Frost and Snow) - - Susan McKeown & Lindsey Horner : Christ Child (from the same) - - Philip Glass, Linda Ronstadt & The Kronos Quartet : Freezing (from Songs from liquid days) - - All About Eve : December (Narnia mix) (from the 10" vinyl December) - - Loreena McKennitt : Snow (from To drive the cold winter away) - - Kari Rueslaatten : Vinter sol (from Spindelsinn) Oh well, I have to admit that I personally quite like my own selection. :-) I plan to bring this tape with me to my and Ron's family for the Christmas days, and hope to play it - while I'm not sure about Ron's family I'm quite sure that my parents will like at least some of the music on it. :-) Best wishes and season's greetings, Marion n.p. nothing n.r. It was one of the most enjoyable live concert experiences of my life, and to be able to relive it whenever I want is truly a great thing. One of the most amazing things about Jane is that no matter what she's doing, what kind of music it is, what she ends up doing is inherently *Jane*. These traditional tunes are no exception.
