Highly recommended. Re Lili Haydn, I did in fact mean =faux= in the positive sense of pastiche. My own (good-natured, I assure you) nitpick is that Baroque music dates from the 17th-18th centuries (Bach's Chaconne for unaccompanied violin--from his 2nd Partita--which is the first chaconne that violinists will think of, dates to about 1730, I believe). Lili Haydn's piece is a late 19th-early 20th style pastiche of this older style. When we saw them open for Holly Cole (talk about "go figure") I thought a more appropriate name for the group was "They Might Be They Might Be Giants, Only a Lot More Annoying." They're very talented musically and vocally, but I think their taste is, at its best, adolescent and provincial, and at its worst, cringeingly sophomoric. They're not anywhere near as funny as they think they are, and their musically stiff (though technically impressive) delivery does not go very far to make up for the artistic aridity of their material. I think they could really make a name for themselves doing kids birthday parties and suburban JayCee meetings. Maybe Lions Club luncheons. Senior citizens' homes. Bus stops. On Sunday woj, Meredith and I went to see Susan McKeown perform at the Acoustic Studio at the Rich Forum in Stamford, Connecticut. There we met up with the infamous Chuck and Joe, who had gotten there a bit earlier and saved us some seats right up front. Before I launch into my review of the show itself, I'd like to comment a bit on the Acoustic Studio. I've been to four or five shows there this year, and each and every time I've been impressed with how well the events are run. It's a great venue for live music and Rich manages to get a lot of great performers. If you live in or near the southwestern part of Connecticut and haven't made it to the Acoustic Studio yet you're really missing out. Check the web site at www.acousticstudio.com for upcoming shows and go to one! As for this particular show, it was advertised as a "holiday" show, though I don't think it really turned out that way. The first act was Dana Mase, who hails from Muncie, NY. She is apparently a practicing Hasidic Jew (if that's the right term), and I guess the idea was that she represented the Hanukkah side of things while Susan represented the Christmas side. Let's just say that Susan held up her end of the deal much better than Dana Mase did, because at least she managed a few seasonal songs. Dana Mase on the other hand fronted a very average rock band that played very average songs. Some people apparently really like Dana, but I didn't like her at all. Quirky can be really great (Tori Amos, Kristen Hersh, M2OH, etc) or really annoying, and Dana annoyed me. Fortunately I knew that no matter how much I hated the first act, Susan's performance would make it all worthwhile. Despite the fact that Susan was operating on very little sleep, this was indeed the case. Susan, Lindsay and John played a really great set, mixing old favorites with a couple of great new(er) songs. Winter King Daddy's Little Girl [the set list simply says "Susan solo" for this next one and I'm not sure what it ended up being... woj? meth? Chuck?] Fuck You The Chariot Coventry Carol Who Knows Where The Time Goes River In London So Fair Bones Through The Bitter Frost And Snow Snakes -------- I Sing Of A Maid This was the third time I'd heard "The Chariot" and "River," and I like them both more and more each time I hear them. It was a great performance, though of course I'd expect nothing less from Susan and whichever incarnation of the Chanting House is backing her up. To make the day even better, I finally got my copy of _Mighty Rain_ back from woj and Meredith. ;) Since I don't think I've commented on it before, let me just say that it is an absolutely amazing piece of work. I've loved the shows Susan and Lindsay Horner have done together, and this CD captures those really well. If you're a Susan McKeown fan you *need* to have this CD. Hi all - I'm sorta new here. I was on the list a while back, unsubscribed due to problems keeping up with correspondence while at work (no 'puter at home), and recently re-subscribed. About 2 1/2 years ago I was in the car when I suddenly sat up at attention and felt myself getting very excited: new Kate Bush music!! But the DJ said is was "Happy Rhodes". I meant to follow up and find out more about her, but it slipped my mind and I never did. Then when I discovered the Ecto world, I though I'd better get hip to Happy. So I ordered 'The Keep' and 'Many Worlds Are Born Tonight'. I listened to 'MWABT' the day it arrived. And: I hated it! I could really respect and appreciate the originality of the compositions and production and of course the vocals, but what kinds of words are these? "Respect"? "Appreciate"? These aren't the kinds of words I use to describe my favorite musical artists. In my gut, the truth is I really, really hated 'MWABT'. It got thrown into the "never to be listened to again" stack. And I never listened to 'The Keep'. (It's still in the shrinkwrap if anyone wants to buy it off me at a bargain price!) My question is: is there anyone else on the Ecto list who dislikes Happy Rhodes? Or have I just earned myself an expulsion from Ecto?!
