Terrific concert, one of the best I've seen this year ... but I need to go to bed now, so I'll detail the concert in a later e-mail. I *LOVE* the CD. I must be out of sorts today because I was going to nitpick and chastise you for choosing to use the word "faux", but I know you didn't mean it as a slam. It's true that it is in more of an early nineteenth century style than a late twentieth century style as far as "serious" music goes. I've received an e-mail saying I've been put on her mailing list, and that Lili is currently writing music for her next CD. It can't come soon enough for me - I think she is an artist I will want to follow throughout a (hopefully) long career. Take care, Eponine Donald G. I scored tickets to Patti Smith on Dec 30, and Moxy Fruvous on Jan 2. Anybody going to those shows? Mark n.p. Susan Werner _Time Between Trains_ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 09 Dec 1998 20:30:07 -0600 From: Mark Lowry Subject: Lucinda Williams, the real deal OK, I think I'm rested up from the concert last night. _Car Wheels On a Gravel Road_ will probably go down as my favorite album of 1998. I know it'll be tops on a lot of other lists, but hey, it's an amazing piece of work. Jim Lauderdale opened up. I've seen him before, at SXSW a couple of years ago I think. He's got a good voice and seems to be an decent songwriter. I wonder what he sounds like on record? Anyone know? He sat in his chair, played, talked to the audience and offered sufficient entertainment while the crowd rolled in for Lucinda. After him, it took almost an hour before she came on. I didn't understand this, considering he was acoustic and there was no set change. Plus, they played Tom Petty's "Wildflowers" album in the interim, which got really annoying. I like Tom and all, but that's not one of his better works. Lucinda was wearing black pants, thriftstore-like western shirt and white vinyl jacket, and a kitschy white cowboy hat. Her band, including Lauderdale on rhythm guitar, backing vocals and harmonica, was very tight. She ripped through an hour-or-so's worth of material. She was very warm, told funny stories between songs and explained what most of the songs were about. She was rather surprised at the large crowd on a Tuesday night (I'm guessing at least 400). She dawdled between songs and stories, though, so there was no real momentum during the concert. My only complaint was that she played the new album almost in its entirety. It's great material, but she only did two of her older songs. And no cool covers -- which I expected from a revered artist who has always hung with folks in that respected country/folk singer-songwriter group (you know, Nanci Griffith, the late Townes Van Zandt, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Emmylou Harris, Gram Parsons, Steve Earle, etc etc). Still, it was a terrific show. The final song of the main set was "Joy," which is my fave track from _Car Wheels_. She went all out with an extended jam with the band. That's it. Now I'm getting ready for upcoming shows: Afghan Whigs (!) this weekend and Lloyd Cole/Jill Sobule on Monday. Later, Mark n.p. Thanks, Mark--great balance of positive and negative, and a really clear evocation of the show. I see you have tickets for Afghan Whigs, Patti Smith, and Moxy Fruvous. I envy you the Patti Smith tickets, I'm mildly curious about the Afghan Whigs show, and I greatly pity you the Moxy Fruvous tickets. Seen 'em twice; would rather mate with an epileptic walrus than see them again. But I'll be curious to read your review. - --charley _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? She will still be playing at Cafe Voltaire in Ventura, CA on December 17th, but the taping of the PBS show, "CD Highway," has been changed to: Wednesday, December 30th at The Mint in Los Angeles at 8:30pm. This is going to be an awesome night of music because the rockin' gals are taking over the club. Melissa Ferrick and Janet Robin are also on the bill that night and all three artists will play full sets (cover is $10). Come on down and spend New Years Eve Eve with us. Basically, you now have an excellent excuse to start drinking a day early. The Mint is located at 6010 W. Pico, LA, (213) 954-9630. This show will probably be packed, so you may want to make dinner reservations to secure a good seat. Trivia question: What Wendy Bucklew song are these lyrics from "It's forfeit or fight, either way there's a loss, 'cause there's always two heads on the coins that they toss, in this city." First correct answer wins a signed "Asleep in the Swing" poster. We'll post the winner's name on Wendy's website: http://songs.com/wendy Ciao y'all, Lorene Machado lorene@flylive.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Dec 1998 00:43:01 -0500 From: Richard Subject: Re: Lucinda Williams, the real deal Nice review, Mark....
