I've heard of the Indigo Girls...in fact, they live here in Atlanta, and one of the members just opened a tony lil ol teahouse in Decatur. I'd like to go there and check it out, but $12.00 for organic salad greens in a salad sounds a bit out of my league. I can buy a cd for that! (Plus, I grow my own organic mesclun.) :-) Carol ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Nov 1998 10:15:54 -0800 From: "C. K. I didn't see your correction message...for some reason my email isn't lining up sequentially. Gotta check into that. Anyway, I'm not a big fan of the Indigos either, but I sure appreciate their political commitments. Amy was down at the big (7,000) rally against the School of the Americas at Ft. Benning Georgia, and I got to hear her speak there. She was the only "celeb" to show up other than stalwart Marty Sheen, who loves doing civil disobedience. He along with 2,369 others crossed the line into the military base and risked arrest, bearing mock coffins and crosses with names of victims of the tactics taught at the SOA to Central American students. It was a pretty interesting day. If anyone is interested in learning more, please visit www.soaw.org. Although I have not heard Diana Ah Naid, this thread reminded me of an artist I’ve been enjoying a lot lately and that’s Rachael Sage and her CD ‘Smashing The Serene’. On first listen, I think of Ani, but I hear someone that has the talent , enthusiasm, creativity and soul to mark out a distinct place of her own. When I listen to a CD for the first time and reach for the lyric sheet, that’s a good sign that my attention and been captured, and that’s how ‘Smashing The Serene’ strikes me. The lyrics are thoughtful, intelligent and deserve careful scrutiny. For example from “Air We Share”: “Black is the breath embracing a loveless vein and Slow is the death of lust in an empty train may Crash into rock and suffer the ancient truth that All that we are is all that we fear to do” Of course the lyrics are only part of the story, you need to listen to the music to appreciate what I would consider a genuine rising star. Good to see someone else reiterating what I (and others) have been saying here about Rachael Sage. :) Unless I discover someone else by some miracle in the next month, she's going to win "Musical Discovery Of The Year" honors for 1998 hands down. And _Smashing The Serene_ is going to be very high up in this year's top 10 for sure. There is nary a weak song on the disc. Anyone who loves thoughtful lyrics and inventive musical arrangements needs to check this woman out. She is very up-front about her influences (Ani DiFranco, Indigo Girls) and they are evident, but with Rachael Sage her whole is definitely more than the sum of those parts. Once again, I say: highly recommended. +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Nov 1998 20:53:12 -0500 (EST) From: dmw Subject: veda hille review for them as is interested: a review of the veda hille show at meth and woj's house of music (with a couple of pictures) is available for yr perusal at the pathetic caverns -- click on the ticket on the menu, or http://www.pathetic-caverns.com/music/l_h.html - -- d. - - oh no!! you've just read mail from doug = dmw@radix.net dmw@mwmw.com - - get yr pathos:www.pathetic-caverns.com -- books, flicks, tunes, etc. - - new: veda hille! robyn hitchcock! rebecca wells! edward yourdon! ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Nov 1998 21:18:30 -0500 From: Matthew Levy Subject: [Fwd: Happy Rhodes Living Room Concert!]] This is a multi-part message in MIME format. - --------------3B922FE187A84511996F2C3C Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit - --------------3B922FE187A84511996F2C3C Content-Type: message/rfc822 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline Message-ID: <3661E79C.E4D28058@nimbus.ocis.temple.edu> Date: Sun, 29 Nov 1998 19:32:28 -0500 From: Matthew Levy Organization: Temple University School of Medicine X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.04 [en] (Win95; U) MIME-Version: 1.0 To: ecto@ecto.org Subject: [Fwd: Happy Rhodes Living Room Concert!] Content-Type: multipart/mixed; boundary="------------9F2E7B1A4579A617E859D35E" This is a multi-part message in MIME format. - --------------9F2E7B1A4579A617E859D35E Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit I tried e-mailing the Echoes Radio Show to see if they'd rebroadcast the Happy Rhodes Living Room Concert. Sadly, it probably won't be for a while. Some stations around the country that air Echoes on sunday evenings may be running the concert this sunday. Unfortunately, individual stations use Echoes in many different ways on sundays. Sometimes they use tapes, sometimes they air our feed. If folks on your list live in a city that runs Echoes on Sunday, they can call thier local affiliate and see if they plan to air program ID# 98-J07-00231, first aired on Thursday November 19, 1998 (Echoes Program Y-47). Happy included our first concert recordings on "The Keep". I'm not sure if she will do a similar thing with these. Samson Records might have a say about that one way or the other. Sorry that you missed the program. I'm also sorry that it is neither practical nor legal for me to make copies of the performance available. Good luck tracking it down. Especially the piano opening to "Ode to a Sailor," which to my ear could be a Cohn piece. Anyway. Great disc.
