Does the smirking person in the lower right-hand corner look familiar? ^_^ Yup, I was picked for the annual "peer pilotage" program that Tower Records runs every Christmas, in which readers write in with five of their favourite albums and five albums they'd like to receive, and the PULSE! editors make up a list of five albums they might like. There's some free stuff in my future, that's for sure. Oh yeah...for those of you who know that I'm a fanatic about certain artists that weren't listed, bear in mind that I only had five choices and opted to mention the five records that were next to my turntable that day. I'm spending the day going through new CDs from the mail here, and just came across one by Annika Bentley, who I'd never heard of before. I like it a lot, and it falls right in the core of ecto: distinctive female vocals, obscure skillfully written lyrics. Annika plays guitar on some songs, piano on others. Other musicians on this album play violin, cello, and acoustic bass (all four are women, BTW). According to the web site (http://www.annikab.com/), her live performances, in addition to original music, "may also include covers of such artistsU songs as: Tori Amos, Ani DiFranco, Leonard Cohen, R.E.M., Concrete Blonde, and Mazzy Star." She seems to be based in Rochester, NY. "Ah, must be Diana Ah Naid then" I said >to myself, and sure enough it was. Actually I've always (unfairly) resented Diana for being more like Ani than Ani is, from the moment I heard "I Go Off". The busily strum guitar, the slightly over-earnest vocals, the lack of any production values and the self-empowerment-in-your-face lyrics (of which I remember liking two lines a lot, and finding the rest somewhat directionless). Unfortunately, judging from the singles off her first album, she seems too caught up in the attitude and not showing enough musicality (or Ani's Dylanesque poetic brilliance, for that matter) to make her anything more than interesting. I've heard her new e.p. is a vast improvement, though. Laptops are wonderful things. woj is driving us home for Thanksgiving, and I'm sitting here in the passenger seat writing a review of the Tori show we just left at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark. I don't know how she does it, but she's batting 1.000 on making the last show I see of a particular tour be by far the best. I wouldn't believe this set list if I hadn't been there to hear it myself: Precious Things God Girl Hotel Past The Mission Sugar Yes, Anastasia (solo piano) Merman (solo piano) Baker, Baker (solo piano) Little Earthquakes Crucify Black Dove The Waitress (encore #1) Talula Raspberry Swirl (encore #2) Tear In Your Hand Beauty Queen Mary Silent All These Years It's like she decided to show everyone what the 1992 tour would have been like if she'd had a band. Incredible. I would've bet any sum of money that I'd never, ever get to hear her do "Girl" live, but there she was, and playing it with the band, no less! When she segued that into "Hotel", which was the one song off _Choirgirl Hotel_ I'd been wanting to hear in concert but hadn't, I just about died... then a few songs later the full band version of "Little Earthquakes" started up before the final notes of the always killer "Baker Baker" had died away, and yes, I really did start to cry at that point. Tori does this to me once per tour, and it's always in the last show. I don't know what it is. Everything rocked, once the show got going. The main set was late getting started for some reason, then the lights finally came down and the boys started the beginning rhythm of "Precious Things", which was fine ... but then for some reason this huge white curtain descended and hid the stage from view. The music continued for a few seconds, while several roadies were visible running around in confusion behind the curtain, then the music stopped and the house lights came back up. Something had made the fire curtain come down. It took a few minutes for the curtain to be raised again, then the lighting people discovered that the curtain had knocked the lights on the main scaffolding all out of whack, so a tech had to shimmy up the rope ladder to the scaffold and refocus all of them. While all of this was going on a British voice came over the system saying "Well. Let's just all pretend that you're all just sitting down, we're about to do a show for you and NONE OF THIS EVER HAPPENED. Take two!" It was pretty hilarious. Fortunately, that was the only real glitch. As expected at this stage in the tour Tori's voice is pretty ragged, but she can still hit the soaring notes. Amazingly enough, some of the songs didn't really suffer for soundng like Stevie Nicks was singing them. I noticed a really intricate bass line going in "Raspberry Swirl" which wasn't there before, and it really added to the song. We had pretty good seats, too - in the last row of the first balcony, just right of center. I was afraid the sound would be muddy underneath the ceiling of the second balcony like that, but it was fine. The people sitting around us were remarkably well behaved, which helped too. The NJPAC is a brand-new venue, built to house the NJ Symphony Orchestra and revitalize downtown Newark. It looks like it's already doing its job. I'd like to go back there to see another type of performance sometime. Alas, it won't be a Tori show for a while, though. Sigh. If anyone has a chance to catch one of the final shows on the tour, don't pass it up. Things are showing up on the set lists now that need to be heard to be believed. +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V4 #417 **************************
