In case you don't dwell on every detail of my posts - I'm in New Mexico for 9 months. My desert island contains a ridiculously large selection of music though. One of the things i tried to do was take things with me that I'd neglected over the years, and pay some attention to them. (Though my purchasing continues at it's usual ridiculous pace. I don't know why I thought it would slow down just because I'd moved.) Anyway, in that pile was a tape you made for me. I remember listening to it once or twice, and mostly thinking it was weird. But time and a bunch more listens has made me more open to it, and I find it a very entertaining melange - a nice mix of oddness, humour and prettiness. I always like to know when my tapes are appreciated, so I figured you would too. Not ONLY is Ani coming to Melbourne on Jan 30th (it will be first Ani concert as I couldn't go last time around), but on the promos for the concert they list that she has a new album out here mid-January - and I'm guessing that means perhaps a month for the rest of you. The album is called "Up Up Up Up Up Up". At first I thought she was poking fun at REM or Peter Gabriel, but I really have no idea why it's got such an annoyingly/endearingly repetitive title. Does anyone know what this is? A compilation, another live album, or perhaps even a new studio album (which means she's decided to become scarily prolific again). Whatever it is, I'm excited! In fact, I hadn't heard any of their music before the show, and was put off from buying anything based on my experience. I have heard a few tracks on a sampler tape and thought they were quite excellent, but I'd be pretty leary about seeing them live again. They would be one of the last bands I'd imagine putting out a live album. (Sorry about those last few personal messages posted to ecto. It's kind of funny that they included the Gaelic lyrics, but send you to the web site for the English ones. Anyway, I highly recommend this to anyone who likes Gaelic singing, Celtic music or is just curious. It's certainly on my list of notable album purchases of the year. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Nov 1998 14:44:04 -0700 From: neal copperman Subject: Re: Susan McKeown! The line I remember was about the one person who knows you better than anyone else, and the music and lyrics were so wonderful that I want to get a copy of this. Could someone tell me the title of the song and the album it's from? (If this is any help, she played it after "Ode to Billie Joe", and pointed out the similarities between the two, and it was right before a commercial break.) Very annoyingly, the cover has the words "advance album copy" on it, which means that some bastard critic has a copy and I don't! Grrr! Anyway, the picture is of Ani with her face turned away floating in mid air with her hand in front of the sun, as if she's cupping it. It kind of suggests her as a slum angel, fitting in with the title and managing to send up all the Jewel/Madonna mysticism that seems to be popping up everywhere.
