It didn't make a big impression on me when I got it, but I actually have it with me, which means that it's something I didn't give more than a cursory listen to and was in my "pay more attention to" pile. I had their album EDEN (which I consider to be their finest collection of songs...and I have them all.) and a few others. The video was from before Ben got sick and lost so much weight. I always thought it interesting that their sound changed dramatically right after Ben's physical appearance changed as well. He started to look like a scruffy clubkid, and then there they were, their sounds in every nightclub in America! I should talk a bit about Tracy's voice here, but that's what everyone always talks about. I want to talk about Ben. When I was watching this video collection, I literally began to cry at how sad some of these videos were. More bittersweet than sad. But oozing with Love. Love in the music, love in the cinematic visuals, and love in these two musicians faces. The combination of the sounds and visuals was entrancing. Ben was amazing to watch, he was giving Tracy these looks, you know, those looks that we all want someone to look at us with. He made me want to swear off my beloved bachelorhood. He was able to convey such subtle emotions with the wrinkle of an eyebrow or a wistful swing of his body. I called my friend and said "I want to quit my job and go on tour with Everything But The Girl! I was falling in love with Ben (and I guess Tracy too). I have to meet them!" Then, I got my chance when they came to Chicago to play a show in support of their album "Amplified Heart." They did an instore autograph signing and I went through the line 3 or 4 times. I made tham sign everything I could get my hands on. In fact when I ran out of things for them to sign, they signed my CD twice. Isn't that funny? I asked them to sign the inside and then the outside. They must have thought I was mad! I gave Ben purple flowers. It was such a great day. I think it appeals to the broadest range, and people I've tried to introduce to them tend to gravitate toward that album. That said, though, Eve was the first album I got and probably remains my favorite. I think all of their albums are worth having, but I'd probably put 'Til We Have Faces at the bottom of my list. Mostly it depends on my mood, though. I actually have yet to see OTR live, because when I saw the Cowboy Junkies over the summer, the venue they were playing at ended up wanting a larger opening act, so I just got to see OTR members playing with CJ. Carol ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Nov 1998 16:11:04 -0600 From: "Owen L. Magee" Subject: Review: Jewel _Spirit_ I didn't like _Pieces of You_ at first. Something about her voice turned me off. After a year or two of letting the album lie around, a friend suggested that I give it another go. I did, and actually quite liked it. I didn't think it was a _great_ album, really, but I could see glimpses of greatness here and there. I liked the tune to "Who Will Save Your Soul", the unabashed naivete of "I'm Sensitive", the images in "Painters"... Two summers ago, I saw her at Lilith Fair, and her performance was amazing. She rocked out, and I loved it. I saw those glimpses of greatness being fulfilled, so I was really pumped for a new album. One scrapped album and a new album later, I have to wonder what happened to that greatness. _Spirit_, for me, elicits nothing more than a "Blah". Maybe a "yawn" if I'm feeling generous. The album fails for me on almost every level. Musically, it all sounds pretty much the same. I can't really pick out any hooks to keep me interested. There's a nice tune here or there, like in "Hands" and "Do You", but overall, the music does nothing for me. It never takes me by the throat like "Love Me Just Leave Me Alone" or "Carnivore" (or even the yodeling). At least I don't hate the music on _Spirit_; but that's more than I can say for the lyrics. There appear to be two types of songs, lyrically, on _Spirit_: 1) Quasi-religious songs that say that the world can be a bad place, but people are really good/nice/innocent at heart, and we can all make the world a better place. 2) Generic love songs with bad poetry. Maybe I'm being harsh, maybe I'm just not "getting it", but I find most of the lyrics on _Spirit_ to be, well, bad. Some appallingly so. For instance, I can't help but visibly wince at this, the first line of "Deep Water": "You find yourself falling down / Your hopes in the sky / But your heart like grape gum on the ground" "Grape gum on the ground"--what an unfortunate image, what unfortunate alliteration. I suppose she picked the grape flavor just so she could fill out the alliteration and score poetry points. Whatever. Or how about this, from "What's Simple Is True": "Our two shadows merge inseparably" Um...What? How about one more: "Hitler loved little blue-eyed boys / And it drove him to hate" That seems to be a rather simplistic explanation for Hitler's psyche, but anyway... When the lyrics aren't bad, they're extremely general. She talks _about_ things a lot, talks _about_ what a great love she has or whatever, but never offers any evidence. She talks _about_ how people can be good, or can become innocent again, in a cruel world, but she never offers any examples of people that do. "Show don't tell" as Neile said. She used to do that sometimes with songs like "Painters", but not on this album. Even if I concede that it's OK for her to simply talk _about_ things, the lyrics still fail in communicating anything interesting to me. I've heard all the things she's talking about before, and she doesn't even bother to communicate them in novel ways. And she keeps harping on the same topics over and over and over again. And if I hear how something is like a flame, particularly a "fragile flame" just ONE MORE TIME... Actually, my favorite part of the album is the bonus track "This Little Bird". Nedra puts more feeling into her singing in that song than all of Jewel's singing for the rest of the album. OK...I think I'll stop now. Suffice it to say that I've listened to the album three times, and I don't know that I'll be able to bring myself to listen to it again. I just wish I could have a copy of that album that Jewel scrapped... I promise I'll post a positive review in a few days. Probably The Nields _Play_, which I absolutely love (but maybe just a tad less than _Greta_, mind you)... Rant rant rant... Thanks in advance for the assistance. :) +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Nov 1998 23:44:22 -0600 From: Mark Lowry Subject: hair/DCD/Sarah live album Sorry guys for this taking this little non-Ecto moment neal copperman wrote: > What's with all these bands? As far as hair metal goes (which is what I grew up with), I'm going to admit that the Crue was my favorite, for whatever that's worth. Journey is the one that scares me most. And they're selling out the venue, without Steve Perry (like it matters). Almost makes me ashamed to live in the South. (Or, as Neal asked, is this happening everywhere?). I often refer to the Journey/REO/Air Supply genre as "white trash rock." A very fine line separates those from the Lynryd Skynryd/Foghat/Allman Bros group, which I like to call "lake music." I'm so sad to hear about the DCD breakup. Definitely one of the best shows I've ever seen. Does anyone know if Brendan Perry plans to work on other projects/solo stuff? And, in a very rare case of me actually pulling some Ecto-related news off the net that nobody else got to first (or if they did, I missed it) .... here's info on Sarah McLachlan live album and home video releases that I got from Rocktropolis allstar news at http://allstarmag.com. >Nettwerk Records has announced plans to release a live Sarah McLachlan album, and a companion video, in early 1999. The >set will feature songs from McLachlan's two-night stand in Portland, Ore. from her 1997 tour. Music video director Sophie >Muller (Weezer, Annie Lennox) filmed both shows for the concert video, which will also be available as a DVD. The album >and video are tentatively slated for a March release. >McLachlan, meanwhile, has begun writing songs for her next album. BTW, thanks Neal and Emily for Over the Rhine suggestions. I'm keeping my eyes out. Mark n.p.
