Oh my God! It's been a looooooong wait, but finally Wendy & Lisa are back with a new recording...and it is awesome. Quite possibly the best thing they've ever done, certainly the warmest and most mature. I recently spotted Wendy (Melvoin) when she was on Saturday night live playing guitar for Sheryl Crow when she was the musical guest a few weeks ago, like the first week in October. (Wendy sings the great harmony on the hook in the chorus of Sheryl's new single.) Oh man I am so excited about this album. They seem to be working under the name GIRL BROS. now, so if you don't find it under Wendy & Lisa check under the G's. The album is dedicated to Jonathan Melvoin, Wendy's brother who died while he was the touring keyboardist for the Smashing Pumpkins. Like his sister, Jonathan was an amazingly accomplished musician who wrote some of the beautiful orchestral pieces on Prince's Around The World In A Day album. The most beautiful song on the album is written and sung by Lisa (Coleman) and its called Jonathan. Worth the price of the CD alone, but you'll love all of it because these women BLOW MY MIND! God, they are SO talented I can't stand it! The Sons have long been considered the next Peter, Paul & Mary by many in the international "hard-core" folk scene and are beloved as Chicago's hometown folk music heroes. Winning praise from Peter of PP&M himself, as well as Paul Simon who also granted them the rare permission to change around his Bridge Over Troubled Water to merge it with a song of their own. Inspiring, uplifting, delirious and tender is how I describe the three part harmonies and melodies that this trio created. They have 2 albums which you should snatch up, Three Good Reasons and Consequence of Speech (both on the WATERBUG label). All three Sons are gifted singer-songwriters and their chemistry was a joy to behold on many of the live shows I would always anxiously await to see. I hope they will find some way to continue. Nancy Walker leaves behind Bruce Roper and the amazing Sue Demel(rumored to be the only person able to scat AND yodel at the same time). The best to all of them. A check of Subject Lines for the last quite a few months show no June Rich titles. Folks, if you like a band/artist, talk about them. That's what Ecto is for. But while you're at it, put their name up there in the Subject Line so the posts can be accessed later for a quick refresher. It's practically impossible anyway to keep up with all the artists talked about here and it's so much easier when a "Sort" of the Subject Lines can lump them together. (I know I've been guilty of not doing this in the past) Thanks. Now, what's June Rich and why are people so upset that they're no more? June Rich is a Philly band, er, to be more specific, a Manyunk band. They've been compared favorably to the Indigo Girls, particularly in terms of Vanida and Jackie's beautiful harmonies. Vanida and Jackie, however, write all the songs together (unlike Amy and Emily who write their own songs) and both play acoustic guitar. The other band members, are just as important -- Alan and Garry on electric guitar and bass guitar respectively, and Ronny (or a substitute) on drums. I'm sure that's the concept, but the whole never-getting-your-hands-dirty aspect of it is rather telling. I feel that's what Jewel is doing with her music now. She's a preachy angel with fashionably tangled hair, though in a modified, prettier way. Her songs and music are modified and prettier these days certainly more didactic and simplistic. No thanks.
