IT was a very cool club, which apparently is usually a dance club, but is branching out into music. And doing a marvelous job of it. Next week is Natalie Macmaster with Mary Beth Lammond, then Jonathen Richman, and then.... The Cowboy Junkies!!!! The place holds 176 people, so it'll be pretty amazing to see the Cowboy Junkies there (though the last time I saw them was from only a few feet away, so what does it matter if the place was bigger). Anyway, the show.... Jude opened, as has been written about plenty of times. I actually kind of liked him, which was a pleasent surprise after the Jude-bashing I'd read. He had a decent voice and some intriguing songs. I wouldn't run out and see him, but I wouldn't run away either. Sinead got off to a slightly slow start. Either that, or it took a few songs for me to get into her music. I hadn't heard any of it before, and found it to be quite winning. Kind of tough to make out the lyrics, but what I heard made me interested in hearing more, and the music was melodic and fairly varied. I picked up a disc at the show. From what I gathered from the paper and overheard conversations, there is actually an older disc out there too. Sounds like it is more traditional. It's also not available in the US. I asked about it at the sales table, and the guy said it wasn't available in the US. (Duh, that's why I wanted to buy it!) A few weeks before that I saw San Francisco pianist Sarah Cahill in an amazing performance space in Albuquerque called The Outpost. I will definitely be back there on a regular basis. SHe played an intriguing program of cutting edge music from the early 1900's. Of note was a series of songs by Ruth Crawford, Peggy Seeger's mother and Pete Seeger's step-mother. Apparently her serious composing carreer faded away into transcribing folk music, and she amazed her children in her later years by suddenly starting to compose again. Other interesting pieces were by Henry Cowell, John Cage's piano teacher, who composed songs that called for using the fist and full arm as well as just the fingers. Amazingly enough, much of his music tended to be rather sweet and charming. And some weeks before that, I saw ani difranco at the same auditorium where Tori played at. I got even better seats for ani! 4th row center. She tore the place apart too. The ushers managed to keep everyone in their seats for the entire Tori show except for Raspberry Swirl, but they could barely keep an aisle open during ani's set. SHe was in great spirits, and managed to set off the fire alarm 3 times during the show. (A three alarm show, she quipped.) I was curious what happened to Andy Stochansky though? This is the first time I've seen ani without him. Also, what is the song where she sings "In walked a man in the shape of a man, wearing a hat shaped... hat". I can't figure out if I just have it on boots or if I'm overlooking it on one of my albums. neal now shuffling over: Suddenly, Tammy! - We Get There When We Do (I was playing this when woj's post came in.) It's certainly more melodic than JLP which ordinarily isn't good in my books but the 'closeness' feel of the music and the melodious dynamism of some songs make this extremely good music. She sounds Tori-esque at times and even a bit Ani-ish (especially the resonance of her voice in some songs). some songs which really stand out for me at present: Can't Not- this is the studio version of the one she sang on tour. It's one of the best song I've ever heard! It's ethereal, then pure power and then just simply unnerving. Would Not Come: this have a 'hung over but still at party' mood to it. The closeness of the music again coupled with the chorus churning out electric guitars accompanied by low-key 'undecided' strings send shockwaves up my spine:) The Couch-this has a very epic feel to it. The part ethnic drums and the continuity/storytelling aspect of the vocals remind me of the dynamism found in the best Greek songs. I Was Hoping-this reminds me of Madonna re: Ray of Light...the thundering eastern sounds again coupled with continuous storytelling aspect of the voice make this another brilliant song. Actually it's a very well rounded album all in all (if you still want those crude guitars listen to Joining You or Baba). Anyway I'd be interested to hear what other ppl think of it. bye now Kyri:) the frenzied girl has matured ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 3 Nov 1998 07:56:38 EST From: Riphug@aol.com Subject: Sinead Lohan's earlier cd In a message dated 11/3/98 3:20:31 AM Eastern Standard Time, neal@swcp.com writes: << From what I gathered from the paper and overheard conversations, there is actually an older disc out there too. A friend of mine from Norway is sending it to me.....she got it from an online place called BOXMAN - CD . It's also available from CD Universe for $34.97 and CD Now for $39.99. And you can get it through GEMM for $25.50. Sounds like your best bet is to do a trade with someone in Europe..... Yes, but most Americans have problems understanding the Norvegian language. Boxman has also Danish, Finnish and Swedish language versions of their pages in addition of Norvegian and English. I think the company is based in Sweden (their phone numbers have +46 country prefix). > It's also available from CD Universe for $34.97 and CD Now for $39.99. But it seems like there's more to it than that; I was looking for the latest Bel Canto there (I figured where better to search than on a Norwegian site?!) and though it was listed along with several other BC discs, they didn't have a "buy" link on it (several of the other discs, all of which have had US releases, did). So unless _Rush_ is already out of print, there's something else going on. Any thoughts? (and anyone out there wanna work a trade so I can get my mitts on _Rush_?) jeff ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 3 Nov 1998 07:45:37 -0800 (PST) From: hooligan Subject: d'oh *** Trial begins in claim against Sarah McLachlan VANCOUVER, Canada (Reuters) - Singer Sarah McLachlan's musical credibility took center stage in a Canadian courtroom Monday as a trial began in a dispute over who wrote four songs on her "Touch" album. Darryl Neudorf is demanding co-authorship credit for four songs on the album, not considered a success when it was released in Canada in 1988, but which helped land McLachlan a U.S. recording contract. McLachlan, now 30 and a Vancouver resident, has zoomed to the top of the music charts with albums such as "Surfacing," and by organizing the popular Lilith Fair, an all-female music tour. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 3 Nov 1998 13:52:10 -0500 From: Paul Blair Subject: My Scarlet Life in NYC??? Some of you G5-list veterans may recall that I was publishing a zine for a while there, and in the much-discussed, breakfast-themed fourth issue, I was to include a recipe from Sean Eden of Luna. Due to various extenuating circumstances, that issue never hit the stands. However, I will be putting together a webzine for my final project in my communications class, and since the recipe was not time-sensitive, I figured I might as well open it up to the general public. I recently put it up on the web as my first webpage, and for someone's first effort, it doesn't look half-bad. However, I'm looking at it, and I feel like I could make it look even nicer. All you HTML gurus out there, please go to: http://members.tripod.com/~modpixie/lunayumyums.html and let me know what you think, and how I could make this a more interesting-looking page. Please be specific, with exact HTML-tags that will make this a more intriguing page to look at. In particular I'd like to center the photo at the top of the page (if the photo is a good one to have up there) and change the colour and size of the background and the text. Any advice or constructive criticism is much appreciated. Also, for those of you G5/Luna webpage maintainers -- please do not link to this page yet. I'm not happy with it in its present state, and when I come up with a final draft, I will post it to the group. At that point you may share the joy with the readers of your webpage. :^) Thanks in advance! - ---- Chelsea, the mod pixie home: away: tugboat@channel1.com odyshape@hotmail.com "I started out as a missionary, but I couldn't find a religion which didn't promise things to some people at the exclsion of others.
