Woooo! Hey all... I caught Elf Power's show in Boston last night. For the uninitiated (ie, those who'll receive this as a post to Ecto), EP are another one of those Elephant 6 bands I loves so well. Unlike some of the music coming out of that movement, the Elfs aren't cathartic and scary-wonderful like Neutral Milk Hotel, and their music isn't as moody and cinematic as Olivia Tremor Control. Their music has a definete pop linearity in their melodies -- their jangly guitars wind themselves around intriguingly crazy rhythms, loping to a Merseybeat or pogoing to a thrashy punk tempo. This, combined with their playful lyrics, rife with fairytale imagery, reminds me a great deal of Tanya Donnelly's contributions to the band Throwing Muses. On stage, the band was frisky and fun to watch, with a definete excitement about what they were doing. Their approach had a do-it-yourself vibe to it, with multi-instrumentalist Laura Carter (?) playing a guitar with a glass soda bottle to resemble the sound of a lap-steel. Nick, the lead singer, had an amusing presence, regaling the audience with tales of the band's recent sojourn in the recording studio and unravelling the stories of what the songs were about. the band's animated presence inspired some similar reactions in the audience, some of whom were not content to just nod their heads to the rhythm of the songs. My words aren't doing the otherworldly amusement of the band much justice...suffice it to say, their tunes are wonderful pop to behold, and their excited and excitable presence live makes theirs a show to watch. I also got to briefly hang with the band prior to the show, and Bryan, Laura, and Nick (that's your name, right?) were some of the nicest, funniest people touring today. It was great to finally speak to you after my becoming such a legend on the E6 list, and I look forward to hearing your new music. - --Chelsea, the cake grrrl - ---- Chelsea, the mod pixie home: away: tugboat@channel1.com odyshape@hotmail.com "I started out as a missionary, but I couldn't find a religion which didn't promise things to some people at the exclsion of others. Has anyone heard of Sara K. or Rebecca Pidgeon. Both of these artists record for the Chesky label, which is an "audiophile" label featuring special recording techniques. Jeff mentioned Rebecca's albums. The first one (_The Raven_) has a nice cover of "Spanish Harlem"; the most recent one (_Four Marys_) contains a collection of Scottish folk songs; I haven't heard the middle one. Sara K is too "jazzy" for my usual tastes. I have her first album, which has a particular song I remember for its cool guitar "harmonics"; I haven't listened to the album in ages, though. When I think of this album, the phrase "the vocal stylings of Sara K" comes to mind, if you know what I mean... These shows are completly unrelated to the release of the LJ compilation this month, Maria explicitly stated that she was doing that only for fun and wouldn't answer to any interview requests. She is looking for a new record company right now so doesn't have anything to promote yet. > Also where you get you info? From Little Diva the MM mailing list. However I've been told that the tickets for the public for this event have been sold out (I think there were a limited number of them). I hope some of you can make it for Sarah's show, it's her first time playing in the U.S. and I'm sure it would mean a lot to her to have some fans in the audience!
