She has a lot of variety: the early "Monsoon" stuff has kinda beat / Indian trad combos that are kindof unique; the stuff like "Zen Kiss" and "Weaving my Ancestors Voices" are softer and still experimental, and ABCD is one big song which is very relaxing and meditative. > The other big musical rediscovery this week has been Veda Hille, whose work > was pleasant enough when I first tripped upon it. I don't know why but it seems that car crashes show up in several of Veda's songs. Does she have a personal incident or two with that? I think of all sorts of disasters (other than say the top medical diseases) that car crashes have to be one of the most common, and probable because of that, fairly dreaded while simultaneously repressed (because, if you thought about it all the time, how could you drive). I find these references a bit disturbing, and must be in a certain mood to appreciate them. On the other hand, "Strange, Sad" is one of the most beautiful songs I've heard. Another great song is "One Hot Summer". "Song for Snake" is right up there. And whoever said it is right, "Bellyfish" is disturbing. I love "Instructions", too. Well, I guess what I'm saying is that Veda is the discovery of *the year* for me. I hope it lasts for many years. Woj was kind enough to share his bounty of live and rare material with me, and as a result I would like to share some of my booty with you, the denizens of Ecto (or other friends). The tape he sent me of which I am particularly enamoured is the live tape of Syd Straw and Marc Ribot playing at the old Knitting Factory in December 1990, with the following set list: Sphinx (half of it, anyway)/song by her friend/Water, Please/Toughest Girl in the World/Dr. Frankenstein/Philosophy of the World (Shaggs)/Chet Baker song/Sexual Healing (Marvin Gaye)/Breaking Glass (Nick Lowe)/Train that Takes You Away/Dancing Days I would like to offer this for TRADE only. I'm particularly interested in rare and unreleased material by Mary Margaret O'Hara (esp. her recent show at St. Ann's), Throwing Muses (particularly b-sides, and Kristin Hersh's recent show at St. Ann's that will be broadcast on WFUV), and other hard-to-find tracks by Syd. If you don't have any of this, send me two blank tapes and we'll trade that way. Please contact me off-list if you're interested.
