Hey-- Just wanted to add to my other post that I'm now settled in Chicago, working for Steppenwolf. As I get two comps a week for the full season at the theatre and know almost nobody in the area, I wanted to offer them to any Chicago area ectophiles (or people that are visiting Chicago!) that would like to catch a show. That way, maybe I can actually meet some of you people after the show! If you're ever interested in checking out a play, just drop me an email a week or two in advance and I can get free tix for you. Just as a little thank you to ecto for introducing me to so many cool musicians. - --Kay "And here is where you'll have to imagine the rest" - --The Story ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. Returning from the woodwork that I've been hiding in (well, the termites actually pushed me out...) Just wanted to add my comments about Grey Eye Glances' Painted Pictures. I was surprised to see that CDNOW listed this disc as "New Age" when I was ordering it from them. I've seen it filed under "New Age" in a couple of local shops as well. When I listened to it, though, I found the categorization, as much as I hate to categorize anything at all, could be considered accurate. The disc is much more laid back than their previous stuff, it doesn't have as much of the upbeat dancey music like "Passing of the Evening" or "Halfway Back". I think some of their energy might be getting sapped by the broader-based touring and the eight CD (I think it's eight) contract they have with their label to be completed in the next six years...This is not to say that I don't enjoy the disc, I do enjoy ballads and Jennifer Nobel's voice is still one of the most glorious voices I've heard in a long while. "Sleepy" earns points as a neat lyric for anyone who's been trapped listening to a really boring person... At any rate, that's all IMHO. I have only heard a couple of tracks of "Painted Pictures" myself, and while I liked them, I didn't like them enough yet to buy the album. I quite like the previous album "Eventide", and the Sojourn / GEG album "Further on", but what I heard of "Painted Pictures" was too much 'more of the same' for me. I also asked a friend who is a fan of Grey Eye Glances to write some comments about "Painted Pictures", so feel free to use these as well for the Ectoguide: - --- Begin Forwarded Message --- > From: Leon van Stuivenberg > > Although less touching than their Eventide album, this album has a > number of catchy songs and is said to resemble their live sound > more. In the meantime he has bought "Many worlds are born tonight" and "The Keep", he loves them both, and he's now trying to decide which albums to buy next. :-) So I suggested "RhodeSongs" and "Warpaint". :) On a very different note, Sami wrote: > Again I apologize for the private message posted to the public > forum. This is not totally true, in my case we don't have spam filters (yet), and Sami's other e-mails to me did get through alright. (Sami, I also got your latest message without problems). We do have problems receiving (and sending) mail that contains other characters than the standard 7Bit Ascii, though (you know, like that accent in Mai're Brennan's name for example). Our mail provider (I use my e-mail from my work) thinks 8Bit should be banned. Oh well. Maybe they'll grow up someday. So if anybody tries to send me a message and it bounces, please try it again either in as plain text as possible :-) or send the message as an attachment. Or try my boyfriend's address at ron.stevens@wxs.nl . I apologize for the inconvenience. :-) And speaking of work, that's what I'm supposed to be doing now as well. There are so many things I'd like to write about, like I have bought quite a few cd's recently on my vacation in London, but I'll try to post about them in another message. So little time... :-( Best wishes, Marion n.p. nothing (i.m.h. In Tua Nua - Vaudeville, plus I'm thinking of songs to include on a Loreena McKennitt sampler tape :-) ) n.r. I have a MSN Hotmail account, and I've gotten my share of spam from other users. They _do_ have a spam-blocker on their server to which you can add e-mail addresses (or domain names?) and thus keep the hammers away from you. Another tool I have is this: abuse@hotmail.com This way, if I happen to get any spam that has their domain name (and it has happened), I merely forward the offending note to the above address. Hotmail (now part of Microsoft and thus part of MSN) _does_ close down the spammy accounts almost immediately upon notification, and lets you know this by seperate e-mail. Other operations such as USA Net (which also serves Netscape WebMail) do the same thing (abuse@usa.net), so a good list of anti-spam addresses is good to have. Web-based mail providers _do_ have anti-spam resources in place. It only makes sense to use them. And yes, it does make a difference for me. I had corralled seven friends into going to St. Ann's last Friday to see O'Hara, an underground legend from Toronto who almost never performs live and has only put out two recordings in 10 years (the 1988 Miss America and the 1996 Christmas EP)--neither of which capture the scary, heart-wrenching, high-wire effect of her live performances. In addition to Garland, you can hear flashes of Janice, Ella, Aretha, and Joan Baez inO'Hara's voice, a sensuous, dark soprano with a full three-octave range. And while at her core she's a kind of Irish balladeer, she can switch to country, gospel, torch, jazz, blues--sometimes within a single song. She can rock out and scream with the best of them. Her scat singing involves skittering birdlike cries and guttural moans. Sometimes she'll take hold of a phrase and repeat it a dozen times, turning it into an incantation. Most of O'Hara's songs are about love and loss--and more specifically about the physical and emotional sensation of falling apart. What was extraordinary about Friday's performance was that she kept disintegrating and putting herself back together (her longtime guitarist Rusty McCarthy led the unflappable, versatile band). It wasn't only her singing (full of starts and stops, sudden attacks and decays), but the way she moved: two steps forward and one back, legs apart like a three-year-old, or a sad circus clown. She banged out a rhythm on her hip, she kept readjusting her blouse, her bra, her body, her being. You were watching an immensely sophisticated artist figuring out from scratch what it is to sing. When it all comes together--the voice, the rhythm, the lyrics--each time is the first time, and it's ecstasy. --Amy Taubin ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Oct 1998 18:33:12 -0500 From: Steve I Subject: Emm Gryner and Sarah Slean leave Toronto... Despite counting A Forest as perhaps my favourite Cure song, I've been delaying getting Seventeen Seconds, mainly because I find Pornography and Faith too dark and dirge-like to listen to usually, although I respect both albums enormously. Disintegration, though, actually seems to adapt to my moods rather than *demand* that I be holding the blade against my wrists while I listen, so I listen to that far more. In light of this, should I fork out for Seventeen Seconds? Tim ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V4 #384 **************************
