[jjh969@juno.com (John J Henshon)] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 07 Oct 1998 19:38:18 -0400 From: Paul Kim Subject: sinead lohan last night For the edification of Ger ;) Sinead Lohan put on a faboo performance at the Landsdowne Playhouse right next to Mama Kin last night here in Boston. I strongly urge any bostonians to go see her on thursday if tickets are still available. She'd doing a free performance at HMV in Harvard Square at 1 pm and then is back at the Playhouse at 8 pm. Jude was her opening act. Jude is a guy. Signed to Reprise and Maverick. If you know me, you know that I rarely like male vocalists enough to say that I like them. Jude caught my attention. He started off with "You Mama You" and bowled me over. He was playing on a really cheap and bad sounding acoustic guitar, but that didn't matter because his words and delivery were amazing. Throughout the course of his set (maybe 8 songs?), he displayed a rambling spoken-word style kinda like Dylan or Lou Reed (only in a higher pitched voice) that contrasted bit-time with his beautiful singing voice. His voice (tenor) is pleasing, but when he goes into his falsetto, it's mesmerizing. He reaches for it effortlessly and makes it sound pure. It doesn't seem to come across as well on his album; in fact, it seems a little buried there. He brought up an electric bassist for most of his songs and played electric guitar on about half of them...he said that he's influenced by marvin gaye and curtis mayfield... Sinead played with a full band (her on acoustic, a bassist, a drummer with some drum loops, a keyboardist, and a lead electric). I was very pleased with her performance. It brought the album to life (i've found the album to be good for passive listening with only a few exceptions) and I REALLY loved "Whatever It Takes". I can't imagine how the songs would have sounded with just sinead and guitars...everybody added something that made it sound good...the drummer was excellent about making the beats interesting and the keyboardist added a lot of atmosphere. Sinead seemed shy but also quite quick witted, joking with the audience when they started making requests; she also mentioned that her brother Mark lives in Boston and he was in the audience and we gave him a round of applause :) When Jude was playing, the venue was about 2/5ths full...by the time Sinead was into her set, the place was packed...I was amazed. The crowd seemed a little tentative towards the beginning, but they were very attentive and quiet during the songs and very loud and appreciative towards the end. Still....what I would have given to go see Happy Rhodes in Woodstock yesterday... The last time I checked, there were seven cassettes in her name. She is also now on line: http://www.storyarts.org/ ...and her site, still a bit of a work-in-progress, is primarily aimed at those looking to learn more about the art of storytelling. An excellent show, IMHO. Having previously seen Happy in August of '96, this one will probably strike y'all a little different from "the early days". Happy is the lead singer. No acoustic guitar for her. She dances. And the banter between the songs was funnier than some comedy acts I've seen. It's a 6 piece band, with Happy, Kevin and Carl, plus 2 keyboardist/backing vocalists and a drummer, someone else will have to claim to remember their names. (I'm too tired to go looking up the names on the album). For male backing vocalists, they do a pretty good job. One of the keyboard players does some percussion too. My recollection is that they played all of MWABT, tho' not in the CD sequence, plus Down and In Hiding. I'm sure someone else will provide a more accurate list. The projections almost didn't happen, according to one of Happy's early "monlogues", and there were obvious problems, but what did work worked pretty well. There were some sound problems (mostly balancing) early on, but that's par for the course for many bands I've seen. The lighting was good too, using those rotating colored scatter-spots (perhaps someone else knows their real name) that I first saw many years ago at a Peter Gabriel concert. Happy also used some little toy LED type lights (she called them Cyberlights) at various times. It took a little while for the small room to fill up, but I believe it did fill or come close. I was driving there about 5:20 pm and stopped my tape and tuned to WDST and heard the very tail end of an interview with Happy. The DJ, floundering for a wrap up question, asked her what she was going to wear tonight. Happy laughed and answered "Space age polymers". She wasn't totally joking. Then the DJ reminded listeners that Happy was playing tonight and it was free and all they had to do was call and she said the phones "lit up". Another encouraging sign was after the show was over, there were quite a few people buying her CD at a little stand that was set up during the show. Newbie converts, I'm hoping. I'm hoping Sharon or someone can get a picture of Happy's house at Halloween so us non-neighbors can see what she was talking about... What can I say? This became my favourite Happy album after two listens. From what I can tell, Happy is a master when it comes to producing complex soundscapes made from intricate rhythmic forms. This has been true of her previous work, but with this album she seems to have pulled out all the stops. At the same time this work seems very polished and mature. There is a curiously retro feeling to the album. It is as if she now has the musical resources to revisit ideas she first explored long ago, perhaps now being able to express them in the way she originally intended. Favourite track: Winter. Surreal moment #1: Trying to entertain my 10-week old son with a rattle while "Ra Is A Busy God" was playing on the HiFi. Surreal moment #2: Noticing that the capital A's in the liner notes had the crossbar missing. This is surreal because when I first got into Happy 7 years ago, when I made compilation tapes for the car, I wrote the track listings with crossbars missing from capital A's ... My last post got (rightfully) lost in the shuffle caused by the excitement of Happy's recent shows. Somehow I have a feeling this one will follow suit, but I'm going to put it out there and see what bites. :) Has anyone heard anything about what Holly Beth Vincent has been up to recently? The former punk songsmith, who released two killer records in the early 80s, toured with the Waitresses before they disbanded, and came out of exile to record _Vowel Movement_ with Johnette Napolitano in 1995. I know she was doing some solo gigs in LA around that time...does anyone know what came of those, if she's still performing, or what she's up to? I got her album, _The Right to Be Italian_, at Phantasmagoria in DC the weekend of the Simple Machines funeral. As with M2OH, a friend of mine, who knows me well and has a good idea of what music I'll love (about 50% of the time, anyway ^_^) had been recommending her to me for a while, and I'd been wanting to put "Miles Away" on a mix tape for an ex-boyfriend. I'd given up hope on finding it when I tripped over it, and though it was frightfully overpriced ($20! For something that was sitting on the shelf for THREE YEARS! #@%$&*!!!), I brought it home and listened to it a lot this past spring and summer. Since I don't have a turntable at school, I haven't been able to listen to it that much, but after I found two of her singles while I was out today, I started thinking about how much I love that album, and wanted to know what she was up to. I had feared that I'd be nailed to a blackboard, but to my delight I learned Monday night that classes are cancelled on Columbus Day, and I'm free to go where I wish. I scarcely needed the motivation, but the Bearsville concert added incentive in a couple of ways. One was the way Ms. Rhodes was holding the mike. She let it get arm's length in front of herself. I heard a hint of feedback just once, and it was quickly squelched. This suggests that her pipes might be right to try, if but once, dropping the transducer aside and giving us a chance to hear The Voice unamplified. If there is any place on earth that merits the experiment, it's Troy Music Hall. As for Reason Two Go, there were more than newbies lined up at the post Bearsville concert concession booth. Mrs. Ditto and I snatched up MWABT, and for the past 24 hours we have done little other than marvel at it. That the performance is comprised largely of these songs is a siren call. Strap me to the mast, avert your eyes, ignore my cries, but please, please, row near enough for me to hear. Tom ditto@taconic.net "Do you copy? Over" PS Thanks to Sharon Nichols for a pointer.
