For those interested in purchasing the pre-release cassette of her new album (to be released early next year & as yet still untitled), drop me an email & I'll forward you details. Joy has a limited supply of these limited edition tapes left over from the LRT & you can mail order directly from her while they last. The tapes are $12 including shipping & handling. For those unfamiliar with all the hoo-hah surrounding this album, its a major leap forward from her critically acclaimed first album "Angel Town" while staying true to her jazz roots. The songs are more engaging than that first album, in my opinion, & the musicians on it all put on great performances. Cindy Lee Berryhill sat in the producers chair & arranged the incredible string parts played by Garage Orchestra cellist Rennatta Bratt & a small string section. I highly recommend this album to all who have enjoyed Joy's music in the past & I think many more will become enamored with her soon. Drop me a line if interested & I'll send you the direct ordering info. My radio station plays this fabulous little acoustic, live version of "Bury My Lovely" by the much-missed October Project. I came on this morning and part way through the song I found tears springing into my eyes. Why? The beauty of the three part harmonies that this band used. Very powerful. And there's something about the melody as well. Something about a change of meldoy or a resolution of minor into major or something. (I never studied music theory, so I'm not sure of the particulars.) Well, that's it. Just a belated add to an old thread! Can't wait to hear more about the Happy shows! Michael, n.p. Ani DiFranco - Little Plastic Castles P.S. Saw the play "How I Learned to Drive" starring Debra Winger and Arlis Howard last night. Well, I got to hear Happy thanks to Ecto. In other words, I joined the list without having the slightest idea who Happy was! But I joined anyhow, simply because I liked what I read on its home page. I was just so thrilled to find a group of people who, like me, were excited about female artists! And how did I come across Ecto page then? By pure accident, while I was searching for something else, or perhaps just surfing... I only wish I could remember exactly! This was... umm... I guess about 3 years ago? Two and half? Once again my ability to estimate the passage of time fails me completely. But I do know it was shortly after I got my first Internet connection... so Happy has the distinction of being the first (though only one of many) artists I discovered thanks to the Net, and Ecto in particular. Thank you Ecto :) __________________________________________________ There are two rules for ultimate success in life. 1. An excellent show, IMHO. Having previously seen Happy in August of '96, this one will probably strike y'all a little different from "the early days". Happy is the lead singer. No acoustic guitar for her. She dances. And the banter between the songs was funnier than some comedy acts I've seen. It's a 6 piece band, with Happy, Kevin and Carl, plus 2 keyboardist/backing vocalists and a drummer, someone else will have to claim to remember their names. (I'm too tired to go looking up the names on the album). For male backing vocalists, they do a pretty good job. One of the keyboard players does some percussion too. My recollection is that they played all of MWABT, tho' not in the CD sequence, plus Down and In Hiding. I'm sure someone else will provide a more accurate list. The projections almost didn't happen, according to one of Happy's early "monlogues", and there were obvious problems, but what did work worked pretty well. There were some sound problems (mostly balancing) early on, but that's par for the course for many bands I've seen. The lighting was good too, using those rotating colored scatter-spots (perhaps someone else knows their real name) that I first saw many years ago at a Peter Gabriel concert. Happy also used some little toy LED type lights (she called them Cyberlights) at various times. It took a little while for the small room to fill up, but I believe it did fill or come close. I was driving there about 5:20 pm and stopped my tape and tuned to WDST and heard the very tail end of an interview with Happy. The DJ, floundering for a wrap up question, asked her what she was going to wear tonight. Happy laughed and answered "Space age polymers". She wasn't totally joking. Then the DJ reminded listeners that Happy was playing tonight and it was free and all they had to do was call and she said the phones "lit up". Another encouraging sign was after the show was over, there were quite a few people buying her CD at a little stand that was set up during the show. Newbie converts, I'm hoping. I'm hoping Sharon or someone can get a picture of Happy's house at Halloween so us non-neighbors can see what she was talking about... She does not like video. Whether or not you choose to respect her wishes is up to you. There were some technical difficulties last night....but the show is way groovin'. The players were spectacular. Fetching entertaiment. Vulcan Vixen???? Yup, that pretty much covers it. Har! You guys will enjoy this show immensely. I don't know why but it seems that car crashes show up in several of Veda's songs. Does she have a personal incident or two with that? I think of all sorts of disasters (other than say the top medical diseases) that car crashes have to be one of the most common, and probable because of that, fairly dreaded while simultaneously repressed (because, if you thought about it all the time, how could you drive). I find these references a bit disturbing, and must be in a certain mood to appreciate them. On the other hand, "Strange, Sad" is one of the most beautiful songs I've heard. Another great song is "One Hot Summer". "Song for Snake" is right up there. And whoever said it is right, "Bellyfish" is disturbing. I love "Instructions", too. Well, I guess what I'm saying is that Veda is the discovery of *the year* for me. I hope it lasts for many years. Ms Rhodes, if only due to default, may have usurped KaTe as the supreme deity in my musical universe. Blasphemy ? I don't know. Unlike Tori, who's shows I enjoy less and less each time I see her, Happy's hooks only sink deeper each time I see her live. I will admit that MWABT didn't grab me as quickly as her previous discs had, but last nights show dispelled any doubts about it's genius. The 286 mile Nyquil addled round trip was an inconsequential price to pay. To have made the trip barefoot down the razor blade highway to the salt-pit off ramp would have been a small price to pay. She looked stunning and sounded even better. Am looking forward to next Monday and Tuesday. Got to figure out how to get out of working four to twelve Sunday for Philly. When I got into Woodstock I had no clue as to where the venue was and by coincidence as I was passing by the Tinker St Cafe WDST announced that Happy would be doing an interview in a few moments. Just as they mentioned it I spied their (WDST's) sign on the side of the road. I pulled over and listened and waited till it's conclusion. My hopes bore fruit and Happy herself guided me to the venue as she left. She was also nice enough to sign my Roy single. Bailed out of New York early to beat the traffic, which turned out to be a good move but ended up with time to kill. Got to hear the sound check from an open side door. Woj, Tom and Jeff showed up shortly after and we grabbed some surprisingly good if ajita provoking Chinese food in the cafe next door. Chuck of Chuck and Joe arrived a little later with a friend followed by Ms Meredith. The mix was good but they could have put Happy's vocals up one click on the slider and perhaps a click and a half on the second mike set up through a processing loop. I asked Happy after the show what happened with the Museum of Broadcasting thing and she told me that the availability of the venue was dependent on her being able to set up a webcast. Technical and logistical problems made that impossible on her timetable and it had to be scrapped as a result. She had come out to the bar after the show to schmooze and sign some disc's and posters in this very flattering lacy sheathe dress. She looked stunning. She told us that she couldn't make the preceding nights sound check, having instead to rush a neighborhood stray cat, knocked silly by a passing car over to the vet's in Kingston. Thanks to all for the concert reports! I had counted on the webcast, since I couldn't make it to Bearsville (can't make it to Philly or NYC either but will try to make it to Troy) and was somewhat disappointed (read: really annoyed) that it was cancelled at the last minute... Now the real question: Did anyone ask Happy how the tour was shaping up? Any hopes of Boston (or other for that matter) dates? Angelos PS. How likely am I to find a ticket to the Troy concert if I haven't bought one in advance? ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V4 #358 **************************
