How about an IRC session at #ecto tomorrow (Tuesday) night? I'll try to be there sometime after 6pm, but before the concert starts. Ha! I checked the Radio Woodstock site to send the URL to Chris, and I saw that they took a photo from my web site and put it on theirs. I'm not complaining (especially since a) I used the original photo without permission myself and b) it's not on my web site anymore - I replaced it a few weeks ago), I just think it's interesting. It was one of the "duck pond" photos that I tinted green in Paint Shop Pro and saved with the transparency set to the background color. It actually looks great on their site! I want you to find me, *all* of you, *BEFORE* the show. I have something to give you. I can't say what it is because I want it to be a surprise for Happy. Many of you have met me before and will have no trouble finding me. Anyone who hasn't met me will also have no trouble finding me once I tell you that I'll probably be the fattest person in the building. Even if I'm not, I have dark brown hair, part it in the middle and I have 2 silver streaks (natural) in the front. I wear glasses too. There's a picture of me at: http://web.wwa.com/~vickie/vickie/chris.html I'm serious, find me. It's important that it be *before* the show starts, if you want to be in on the surprise. We'll be at the venue early since it's general admission and I want good seats. The doors open at 7, if I remember correctly, and I'm going to be in line no later than 6. Maybe earlier. Before that though, we'll almost certainly be going to "DiNardo's Famous Crabs" suggested by Anthony Matern. It's at 312 Race Street, (215) 925-5115. It's got a full menu, not just sea food. Since no one is really organizing a pre-show gathering, I just chose it because because I like crabs, and according to Anthony it's within a block of the venue. I'll choose a time right now (might as well) if anyone wants to join us. We'll plan to be at DiNardo's between 4 and 4:30 Sunday afternoon. The only reason I say "almost certainly" above is if there is a snag such as DiNardo's not being open on Sundays, or if they're so unbelievably crowded that we'd be better off finding somewhere else to eat. The 5 women harmonize beautifully and they perform a wide range of traditional and original holiday songs. I'm sure others will elaborate more fully, but it's definitely worth picking up. I'm amazed, too, especially as I have the UK single for "London Rain" (thanks, Geoff) and it has an acoustic version of the song that makes me realize how much the album's production ruined what is really a nice song, and one that I could love. The production makes the song so pop as to be indistinguishable from any other pop tune of the last 15 years or so. Ugh! I agree that _Blow_ is probably her best moment. Actually, we went to hear Veda. Naively believing information that appeared on the Croc's website and posters, we arrived shortly before 7:30 when the doors were supposed to open with the show supposed to start at 8:00. This sounded perfect to working stiffs like us, one of whom leaves for work before 6:00 am. No, the doors weren't opening till 9:00 and the show wasn't starting till 9:30. Sigh. Happily, the three of us had enough to talk about that the time flew by, lo, even to the passing of Oh Susannah's set and carried us right to the beginning of Veda's, when we finally went inside and found places to settle and listen. Veda seemed a little tired (she admitted she was after all the driving they'd been doing) and it took her a little bit to really get going, but she played my three favourite songs from _Spine_, opening with "26 Years", playing "One Hot Summer" in the middle and closing with "Bellyfish". Her second song (I think) was "Pause" from the Emily Carr disc, and she played three new songs (since I'd complained how everyone back east was making me jealous talking about the new songs she was playing), one was dedicated to Frances and was lovely, the other was a guitar song, and the third was a song on the piano about how people have to be stronger than love. All in all a wonderful (though WAY too short) set and it was great to hear Veda play again in Seattle. She says she'll be back with the band in January sometime. They're also going to be recording a new album in January, to be released around September of 1999. About the _most_ impressive thing about the recording is that, if you listen closely to the audience sounds--laughing, applauding, etc.; standard live-album soundtrack--you'll be able to hear Vickie and me: we're the ones who are laughing and applauding. The _second_ most impressive thing about this recording is that, yes, it includes Jane, Holly, Mary Margaret, Victoria, and Rebecca (who?) Jenkins, and is a timeless record of the first time Tim Ray worked with any of these artists. Up to then, he was known primarily as Lyle Lovett's pianist; nowadays I think of him as the pianist Jane Siberry and Victoria Williams take turns on. (I wonder if they fight over him?) Vickie and her husbandoid Chris and I drove to Toronto for the _express_ reason of seeing this show, to which we'd been invited by Jane and Holly (it was, as I understand, a limited-access event, taped in the Glenn Gould theatre). Whe got there earlyish and just acted like we knew where we wer going and ended up sitting in on the dress rehearsal. When it was over, we mingled on the stage with the artists, had little mini-reunions with Holly, Jane, and Victoria (she squeals when she sees Vickie), and met--ohmygodohmygodohmyogd--Mary Margaret O'Hara, truly one of the most important artists, of any medium, in my pantheon. I felt like I was a born-again Christian meeting a bashful, self-effacing Jesus Christ. Or something. I'm sure she was wonderful, but I have very little memory of those minutes: my brain was fizzing like an underwater signal flare. After the rehearsal, we drove Tim and Victoria back to their hotel and took Vic out to dinner. In which I was unable to participate much, since, in a most impressive show of brilliance and forethought, I locked the keys in the rental car after parking. The show was, of course, phenomenal (kind of like the Sears Tower is tall). Celind Dion sat makeupless in the audience. You'd never have known it was her, except she had better seats than we had. Backstage after the show, we met David Ramsden. He was a _scream_. He was there with a straight boy he was trying to talk into straying, and he and I brainstormed battle plans while the straight boy blushed. While we were backstage, Mary Margaret pulled us into the dressing room. Jane was _not_ amused. We were there long enough to catch the tail end of the post-show interview roundtable recorded by the CBC. Mitch ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 6 Oct 1998 16:19:57 -0700 From: "Drew Harrington" Subject: Scrappy Bitches Tour Review / Trade Request / Tree Offer Hey all, I caught the Scrappy Bitches Tour (I kind of felt uncomfortable saying that until I saw the show) at both the San Francisco and Palo Alto shows. I was familiar with Veda's music, Spine being one of my recent favorite CDs, but had no exposure to Kinnie or Susanna. The first show on Tuesday at the Coco Club, South of Market in San Francisco was very casual. They opened the show in their superhero personas, "argued" about who would start, and then did three independent sets: Kinnie, Susanna, and Veda in that order. Kinnie did a great set of spoken word / hip-hop / dirty guitar grunge. She apologized for the 60Hz saturation, but it didn't seem out of place. I had never seen her before, but she definitely found at least one new fan that night. The subject matter of many of her songs seemed to fit right into the environment. Veda and Susanna backed her up on several songs with piano and vocals. During her set she gave the mic to a local poet and performance artist Sister Spit (did I hear that right?) who spent 10 minutes sharing a poem and a story with the audience. It was very enjoyable, and fit into Kinnie's set perfectly. Susanna did a short 40 minute set of her songs. Once again, I was unfamiliar with her work, but will be keeping an eye out for her in the future. Her beautiful voice was accompanied by her own acoustic guitar playing, and on a few songs by Veda on piano and vocals, and Kinnie on vocals. Her songs all seemed to have a heavy "western" mood that fit well with the almost country-ish style of her vocals. Veda's 60 minute set included many songs I recognized from "Spine". I had always thought her sound melodic, but slightly atonal - giving it a complexity I had always attributed on her CDs to sophisticated production. Well if you have never seen Veda live, let me tell you that Veda singing and playing her piano or her 4 string tenor guitar are unmistakably Veda. The simplicity of the arrangements are filled out beautifully by slightly dissonant sophistication of her vocal and playing style. It's just amazing. I remember myself thinking that several times throughout her set - "Amazing!" Veda was also joined by Kinnie and Susanna on a couple songs. The show was closed with the three of them sharing Pond Scum - one of Kinnie's songs. Veda and Susanna seemed to be having great fun with the hip-hop tune, playing along amusingly. All in all, the only thing more amazing than the diversity of styles of the three "Bitches" was the effortlessness with which they fit together. __ The Stanford Coffee House show the following Saturday night was shorter, and in a different format. The three of them traded songs round-robin on a song by song basis. They started with the same superhero and argument skit, this time the order was Kinnie, Veda, Susanna. The audience didn't seem as responsive at this show. They only did two sets of about 50 minutes each. There was *NO ENCORE*. I didn't get to pay as much attention to this show as I was spending most of my time at the soundboard recording the show. I had previously gotten permission from all three of the fabulously cool bitches. I told Veda that I would be making the show available to Ecto and Trajectory list members. ____ So..... Here... Goes.... ____ The Stanford show tape was run direct from the soundboard MACKIE 1604VLZ->SBM1->D8. The bottom line is that it sounds *fabulous*. I will be making CDR copies available to Ecto and Trajectory members for free. If you are interested, drop me a piece of email. I will be asking that you send me two blank CDRs and a SASE for their return. In order to keep from getting swamped by this (I've already promised to get copies to Veda, Susanna, Kinnie, Allette Brooks (who opened) and the promoter), I WILL ONLY BE SENDING COPIES TO THE FIRST SEVERAL PEOPLE WHO REPLY. If you have the capability to copy CDRs, *please* let me know in your email. If I get a lot of requests, I will build a tree to get copies to the others. If you are a DAT / CDR trader and have a list, send it, it's always nice to get non-blank disks in return 8-) If this goes well, and if the Seattle show turns out well (A friend of mine also taped that show), I might tree that tape as well. PLEASE REPLY IN PRIVATE EMAIL so as not to swamp the lists. Thanks, Drew ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 06 Oct 1998 18:24:41 -0500 From: "Xenu's Sister" Subject: Saturday in NYC? Does anyone know of something ectopian cool that's happening in New York City this Saturday (the 10th)? We found a Bed and Breakfast in Philly for Sunday the 11th, but got a call back and was the room we'd booked for Saturday isn't available. The rest of Philly is booked up solid too on Saturday night. Chris said, well hell, why don't we just stay in NYC that night since we're flying into Newark. I couldn't find any place in Manhattan for Saturday night, but I've found a place in Brooklyn that has a room. We'll just leave early Sunday morning and take the train to Philly. It shouldn't affect our Sunday plans much at all. Whew! At least it looks like the place in Brooklyn is pretty easy to get to and from, so we'll we sightseeing in the afternoon and whatever at night. (when was Mary Margaret's show again? I couldn't possibly be so blessed. And Veda's on the west coast, darn. How about Susan?) On the WDST web site, the Happy concert is listed as being the *7th* instead of the 6th. What in the world is going on? Do we have a pile of angry Ectophiles in Woodstock at this moment, or will there be some angry souls in Woodstock tomorrow night hoping to see Happy and finding out they missed her by a day? http://www.wdst.com/ "Area events" "Music" "October. 4-10" "Happy Rhodes" "Submit" Poor Happy. She moved to Woodstock thinking she'd get some much needed support from the local music scene, including radio. They'd better have a damn good reason for pulling the webcast at the last minute with no warning. I'm not upset for myself. I get to see her 3 times next week. I'm upset for all the folks around the world who could have had a perfect chance to hear Happy live in lieu of being able to see her in person. In case you have never been here, downtown Albuquerque is not really the place to be on a Monday night. I felt like I was at a Veda Hille show in DC. That is, in the two level club, the people watching the show from the first floor varied from 1 to 5 (that is, me and Jack Logan and his band, and sometimes 2 other people), and something similar upstairs. There were at least as many other people playing pool and drinking at the bar out front, but they might just show up there since the cover is so low, since they certainly didn't notice the music going on. A real shame, since the show was quite good. There was a rave write up on her in the weekly Alibi. In fact, it was all about her, so it gave the impression that she was the headliner. I was quite surprised to find that she was opening. She seemed a bit disheartened at the complete absence of people. (I was failing at my job of filling up the entire floor single handedly during the first song.) She played exclusively from her new double album Fantastic Voyage, which I picked up at the show. The first 4 or so songs were all from the vocal album, and I was beginning to think she wouldn't play any instrumentals. The songs were generally appealing, but seemed more ragged than what I knew from Shocking Pink Banana Seat. (She made comments about fighting a cold, so she may as well get drunk!) At some point, things started to click a bit better, and I thought the songs picked up more energy. Then she started playing some of the instrumentals, and I was completely bowled over. Her guitar playing was a nice accompaniment to the songs, but it wasn't all that striking. But when it was set free to run wild without lyrics, well, that was another story entirely. She played a few instrumentals all in a row, and while none featured any of the wild tricks described in the ectophiles guide, they were each unique and intriguing. I'm actually looking forward to listening to the instrumental disc more than the vocal one. After the show, a pushy and obnoxious guy went up to talk to her on stage. he said he ran some other bar in town and wanted to book her. She said let me pick up my stuff so the other band can get ready, and then I'll talk to you. He said he didn't have time to wait for that. Then he asked what sort of music she played, since he'd only heard half of the last song. (Hi, I just came in, didn't hear any of your music, don't have any time to stay, but insist on your attention.) Then he asked if she played covers! Later I asked her what was with that rude guy, and she said she figured he was on speed or something :) After she cleared her gear out, she came out and hung out in the bar. I went and got my disc signed and chatted a bit, and ended up joining her for the main set by Jack Logan. (A pretty decent band on Parasol, they actually reminded me of the alternative country stuff I liked 10 years ago - - like the Meat Puppets and Rank and File.) Anyway, after the completely mediocre turnout last night, she was very eager that I tell everyone I knew on the east coast about the dates of her tours and encourage them to go... so, here you go. Below is the rest of her tour schedule, and I encourage you to go! Be sure to talk with her afterwards, as she's quite friendly (and tell her I said hi). neal now shuffling over: Happy - MWABT Kate - The Kick Inside ani difranco - Little Plastic Castles (in town Friday!) http://www.pacificnet.net/~susanj/ WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 7th EMO'S Austin, TX with Jack Logan THURSDAY, OCTOBER 8th RUDYARD'S PUB Houston, TX with Jack Logan FRIDAY, OCTOBER 9th BAYOU Baton Rouge, LA with Jack Logan SATURDAY, OCTOBER 10th THE POINT Atlanta, GA with Jack Logan MONDAY, OCTOBER 12th Athens, GA (venue tba-check your local listings) TUESDAY, OCTOBER 13th SKYLIGHT EXCHANGE Chapel Hill, NC WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 21st Philadelphia, PA (venue tba-check your local listings) THURSDAY, OCTOBER 15 OTTOBAR Baltimore, MD FRIDAY, OCTOBER 16th IOTA Arlington, VA SATURDAY, OCTOBER 17th METROCAFE (tentative-check local listings) Washington, DC WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 21st Philadelphia, PA (venue tba-check local listings) THURSDAY, OCTOBER 22nd TT THE BEAR'S Boston, MA FRIDAY, OCTOBER 23rd CBGB'S GALLERY New York, NY ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 7 Oct 1998 01:11:04 -0400 From: "Tom Ditto" Subject: Beggar on horseback The concert at the Bearsville Theater was evidently free to all comers, but there were empty seats, even though it started with a delay to accommodate those who strayed in late. I'm counting on you web listeners to recapitulate the play list, names of musicians, etc. Being present allows for my recounting of sights and smells. Smells? The place was flooded from the get-go with smoke, although the signs clearly said, "No smoking inside." Mrs. Ditto finds the stuff hard to breathe, but she survived. It was the scentless kind. It was the theatrical spray meant to make half a dozen "intelligent lights" that swept the stage stand out as beams. Just how intelligently the lights were used is something we Dittos are somewhat entitled to review, having met as animators for the Raytel Laser Light Show. As the mirrors rocked around on their gimbals and the beams swept through the spectra, there were no surprises. Perhaps that's best, but I like surprises. I could think of a few. As water imagery moved across the dual video screens, I wished that these powerful lights had been exploited for their capacity to produce aquatic effects. But. then, being a beggar, I was not in the saddle. Certainly that is the apropos observation regarding the video. I could see more than a few holes in the line that extant work of mine might have filled. As it happens, one named videographer, Tobe Carey, was sitting in the row behind me. Way behind me. Oddly, Happy made an apology to the audience for the video directly after the most effective piece, which was put together for "Tragic." In this one case, the dual screens stayed in sync. The choice of slow motion video reflected the pacing of the song, and perhaps the thematic use of scenes from Wall Street pedestrians related to an inspiration for the song. "Tragic" was a high point in the concert for me. The flawless musical performance was particularly telling when Happy's voice and KB's guitar momentarily merged into single indistinguishable sound. Forever self-effacing, KB was a downstage shadow, but he has the chops to turn a guitar into a singing violin. Once, in the midst of Happy's adglibs about boyfriends, he let himself be noticed by raising a hand up. HR herself was a Vulcan vixen sporting a pointy ear that twinkled LED's. She had some electric jewelry that covered the spectrum... even blinking blues -- very rare. Someone should post a JPEG on the web of her in costume. The outfit reveals a bit of belly. The hand gestures were some kind of AMSLAM. There was something here even for the deaf, but all in all, as Happy has said and I have often quoted, "It's the music." It was.
