Anyways, here's a small listing of concerts in the Boston area that I'm looking forward to (chris snyder, where the hell is your list *grin*) Sinead Lohan October 6th - Landsdowne Playhouse (according to Adam Klein, this is sold out) she is playing another show there on the 8th, but I'm probably gonna be in Harvard Square at the Brattle Theater watching the Hong King cinema series. This show preempts Liz Phair at the Avalon, right next door. Heather Nova October 9th - Pearl Street Club in Northampton (can anyone give me a ride? I'd like to see her there rather than at Mixfest in boston on October 10th) I'd love to head out to Troy, NY to see Happy Rhodes on the 12th, but that is one hell of a trek for a student with class at 10 am the next morning and no ride :( so instead we have... Melissa Ferrick October 12th - Tower Records on Newbury street (in store record release performance and signing) Patty Griffin October 14th - the Paradise The Nields October 16th - the Somerville Theater Susan James October 22nd - TT the Bears Air October 22nd - Karma Susan Werner October 24th - Emerson Umbrella in Concord this show preempts Melissa Ferrick at the Paradise The Corrs and Anggun October 26th - The Paradise (for only 12 dollars, I figured, what the hell, might as well see some attractive pop singers at a small club) Moxy Fruvous October 29th - THe Paradise and of course there's so much more... I'm still on a high. Great show, but you can read more about it when my review runs in the newspaper on Tuesday. The URL will be http://www.star-telegram.com/entertainment/encore/index.htm Anyway, here was the set list. One song less than she performed in Houston the night before, but two more songs than she did in Austin or San Antonio. Precious Things God Black-Dove (January) Graveyard (I think, it was a short snippet from one of the Pele b-sides, and she did this the night before in Houston) Cornflake Girl Liquid Diamonds Putting the Damage On Me and A Gun Never Seen Blue Jackie's Strength Cruel Caught a Lite Sneeze The Waitress Iieee Raspberry Swirl She's Your Cocaine Horses I know the girl (or met her tonight) who got the actual set list, and Crucify was listed, but it wasn't performed. Hmm. Also, I'm positive that during Cruel she played a little piece from Black Sabbath's "Sweat Leaf." Anyone else see this show and hear the same thing? A friend of mine, who's a huge metalhead (but *loves* Tori), and a big BS fan, verified that that's what it was. Cruel was the highlight for me, but that could be because it's my favorite song from FTCH. I didn't think the band thing worked on Horses, but the new version of Putting the Damage On was absolutely lovely. Mark n.p. She seems to have fun playing but it feels like she would feel the same if she was playing in front of a mirror instead of an audience. In her 1h of concert she said *one* sentence: "it's great to be back in belgium" even if her attitude was telling the contrary. And she didn't do an encore while the audience was very enthusiastic. I can't say I really enjoyed the concert because I was plagued by a family with two young (4-6 years old) children who made a point of yelling for food, drinks, commenting etc. during the whole gig. What I heard of the music didn't impress me though, even if I am a big fan of Heather. To make it short, she looked bored. I won't say the same thing about her guitar player. This girl definitely rocks and has a special way of hitting the strings too that gives an harsher sound than usual. Very interesting technique (since I couldn't enjoy the sound I spent 15 minutes with my binoculars to study her :-) ). Overall I would say it's a concert worth seeing once but I wouldn't go again. I highly prefer her live recordings available on EP (especially the japanese one, its name escapes me at the moment). My feeling is that her best live period was the tour for the _Oyster_ album, it's a pity I missed it. Jill found on the web: > "This record is more raw than Oyster. I wanted the production to be > less of a process and more an art of capturing the moment, with a > lot more spontaneity and room for improvisation," said Heather. It's funny, I feel like it's the contrary. Some songs on _Siren_ are ruined by a "Stock-Aitken-Waterman"-like production. _Head and shoulders_ is a good exemple, the chorus sounds like 80's english bad pop. My greatest music/live-show-missed regret is missing Bob Marley's last show before he died, in my hometown of Pittsburgh, PA. And I was living only two hours away. I really blew it. Left unspoken is the implicit inclusion of Native American music, blues, jazz, and singer/songwriter. From a strictly semantic point of view the phrase 'one world' would seem to have solved the problem of what to call it/what to include, n'est-ce-pas? If you have a good travel agent you can maybe get your room as low as $43 which is what I'm paying. Car rentals these days are cheaper too...about $26/day for an economy car. You may want to consider cancelling those train trips & do a car rental instead (you can stay and park at Newark airport for the NYC concert.) Unless of course you bought the Amtrak pass I mentioned before that allows unlimited travel with three stops within a given zone...that's a great deal & you may see some nice fall leaves & have a relaxed train trip, rather than the stress of driving. When I was planning/hoping to get up to the Big Apple to see Happy, I researched alot of hotels up there. The best I could come up with was $99/nite, which is good for NY. I can share my research and some urls if you want to email me privately. But while I can tell you where I eventually chose to make my reservation (now cancelled), I don't have firsthand experience with the property in question (or any other budget property in NYC...not these days anyway...I've been away from that area too long now.) Mary Margaret O'Hara's _Miss America_ has been on my turntable, in my thoughts and under my skin a great deal lately. This was partially inspired by the tremendous care package of music Jill :D sent me (massive thanks and big hugs, girlie!), and partially through a perusal of the elusive singer's file on the Internet Movie DataBase. My major question regards a comment that Neile made in the Ectoguide, about there being enough material for another record that was scrapped. Are there any bootlegs of this material circulating? (I know, boots are bad and all, but...) M2OH has contributed original tracks to her recordings with the Henrys, as well as other compilations and movie soundtracks -- have all the tracks from those sessions been issued in some form or another, or is there still thirteen or so songs that are destined never to see the light of day? Also, how is her acting? Would it be worth renting a copy of, say, _The Events Leading Up To My Death_ for her contribution? The rating system is pretty daft, with MWABT getting only two stars out of five, and they even call Happy a "Kate Bush ripoff". Furthermore, they label her style of music "hard rock". Just a completely kerflooey website...I have no idea where they get their information or ideas. On a brighter note, at least they do have an entry on Happy and her career...and a few of her cds garnered a few more stars. So, anyone interested in setting them straight on MWABT? I submitted my "corrections" to their database and would love to have company in that pursuit! :-) Oh, yeah...to test the site's "completeness" I checked to see if they had an entry on Sinead Lohan, and they did not. For these ears the effect of "Siren" is the exact opposite to what she supposedly set out to do... If this is raw and spontaneus, what was "Blow"?!? Well OK, I'll answer that one myself: naturally "Blow" was recorded live, and these were early days. Sadly, 5 years and 3 records later for me at least "Blow" remains the highlight of her career. With Siren, she seems to be aiming for a commercial hit rather than "more spontaneity and room for improvisation", which seem to be precisely the missing ingredients... It amazes me how can there be such huge difference between her statement and my perception of that record! __________________________________________________ There are two rules for ultimate success in life. 1.
