I listened to one of her CDs once, and although it's not my favorite style of music ("female vocalist"-type ballads), I thought she had an extraordinary voice. Hard to describe - very subtle and expressive, with a *lot* of great technique and control (ie, studied and developed), but not overly so - her singing has plenty of originality and individuality. I considered buying it just to listen to that voice, but finally decided that I didn't enjoy the songs enough and probably would never be in the mood to listen to it. Which brings me to something that I often find frustrating: lots of times, when I discover a musician or band whose songs, arrangements and instrumatation I love, I usually feel so-so about the singing. Whereas the singers whose voices really strike me tend to sing music that doesn't do much for me. I don't have any examples at the top of my head (other than Mary Coughlan), but it seems to happen a lot. I guess it's because my favorite music is fully-produced pop/rock music with a strong beat and lots of tracks and layers - the kind of music in which a singer's voice could get lost. And singers who really want to showcase their voices usually put their singing up front and center, without a lot of other stuff to distract the listener. So, unfortunately for me, because I spend most of my time listening for the total musical experience (rather than an individual part, such as a particular instrument or voice), I don't often get to listen to singers with really fabulous voices. Her band is also great. Her voice rings clear and true live...I expected that there would be studio sweetening on her cd & she'd be a little less than stellar live...but such is not the case. Very beautiful voice in the live show. Her songs are growing on me...her cd is jammed pack with "singles" material. Very talented gal! See her in a small venue if she comes your way, before she attains the popularity of the *other* Sinead and plays only large venues. I also saw Changelings although in a terrible venue...I'll have their cd reviewed for ya'll soon...right now I'm headed to the Greek festival in Atlanta. Beth Orton and Astrid Williamson each have several pages of interview / photo shoot, plus a full-page cover page photo each (yes, this does mean two covers). None of this is must-see... ...HOWEVER, there's also an extraordinary six-page photo/word creation *by* Stina Nordenstam - similar blurred and oblique pictures and words to the 'desire' stuff on her official website http://www.eastwest.co.uk/stina_feature/desire/desire.html This site is worth a look even if you don't have any interest in Stina's music (here is where I should put the 'IMHO', right?). And and and and... some news of her next recording: > ...her new record _People Are Strange_, named after the Doors song > marks an unlikely departure even for someone who started out in jazz > and moved on to lo-fi experimentalism. > > This is the craziest, eeriest collection of cover versions you're > going to hear in this lifetime; familiar songs turned inside out, > and gutted so only the fragile shell remains... > > It all started after a friend asked her to rework the Elvis classic > 'Treat Me Nice'.
