She really doesn't sound *that much* like Holly McNarland, but occasionally she adopts a similar style of singing. There's a particular style, started by Alanis Morrisette, and now adopted by a number of female singers of a similar age and style. I don't quite know how to characterize it, maybe someone can help me with this. Certainly Meredith Brooks has imitated Alanis' style. So has Natalie Imbruglia (who did nothing for me, btw - I had her album for about 3 days). I do like Holly McNarland, but she does use similar vocal "tricks." Think of the song "Elmo" on _Stuff_ - she certainly snarls her way through that one. (Oops, you haven't heard _Stuff_ yet. Well, when you do, let me know what you think.) Anyway, Chantal K. sings in that snarly way too, on some of the songs. But I think Chantal has a number of different styles. Sometimes she sounds a bit like Sarah M. (One song, "Surrounded," really strikes me as a Sarah-like song, and her vocals on the high notes really sound like her.) On other songs, she reminds me a bit of Sheryl Crow, with a similar straightforward-pop kind of singing. > even though I admit to only knowing that horrible song "Bitch", but > that's enough to turn me off for life). I hate that song, too, but I'm only talking about vocal style here, not songwriting. (And I have to admit that I think that song "What Would Happen if We Kissed" is really pretty.) So _that_ is part of what will be taking English composer Michael Nyman's place on the film's soundtrack. I mention this because Nyman (best known for his scores to films by Peter Greenaway, Jane Campion, and Christopher Hampton) was contracted to score the film. I saw his name amongst the credits on the posters Warners had put up in New York City subway stations. But a few days earlier I read mail from the Nyman Mailing List that said his score was rejected. This morning the word was that Alan Silvestri (eh?) was taking over, according to someone who had seen a trailer for the movie. _Practical Magic_ is a co-production between Warners and the Aussie firm Village Roadshow, so I have no idea whether Warners is acting on its own, or if VR actually agreed to the change. Of course, I have no idea what Nyman will now do with what he was working on all this time. I'd still want to hear it in some way or form. I just won't be seeing the movie it was supposed to go with. ANNA DOMINO + MICHEL DELORY = SNAKEFARM / HISTORY & NEW RELEASE In 1996, around the time of her last release (Favorite Songs From The Twilight Years), singer-songwriter Anna Domino took a break from her solo endeavors to explore her musical roots. Joined by longtime partner, guitarist- arranger Michel Delory, Anna began researching the traditional songs of American folk-lore -- the songs that had informed her life and helped to shape her own musical career. What started as a fun and funky side project quickly took on a life of it's own, and Snakefarm was hatched. Like plenty of kids growing up in the 60's, Anna was greatly influenced by traditional folk music and classic story-songs like Tom Dooley, John Henry, etc. Sung and interpreted many times over by the popular, folk and blues artists of the day, these songs are actually so old that no one even knows who originally wrote them. They've been passed down through the years, melodies and lyrics adapted by each new generation and performer to reflect the times. Anna painstakingly attempted to trace each song to it's earliest known version before she & Michel took their own liberties in rebuilding them. One thing that all the songs in this particular collection have in common is that they're all pretty gruesome -- there's always lots of death by murder, hard-living and trains. On "Songs From My Funeral," Snakefarm have reinterpreted 10 of these tragic songs in a decidely 90's way -- with a beat. The sound is quite different from Anna's solo work -- it's much more rhythmically centered, combining elements of trip-hop & acid jazz, as well as folk & blues. You may already know some of these songs, but you've never heard them done like this before. Snakefarm's first full-length CD "Songs From My Funeral," will be released on Kneeling Elephant/RCA January 26, 1999. C. 12-INCH REMIXES A promotional-only vinyl 12-inch featuring remixes of the first single "St. James" by GUSGUS, SKYLAB, JOHN TEJADA & HYPNOGAJA was serviced to college radio, specialty programs, and club djs last week. A great gathering place and hours of entertainment such as virtual reality games, pool tables, golf simulation, movie theater rides?, food and drinks of all shapes and sizes (a real bar too). A grand fun-for-all-ages entertainment center. Parking is 6 bucks with $3 credit inside. The big plus here is rain or shine, you've got a convenient meeting place. It's big so the best place to hookup is the Bridgeside Grill under the windows inside of Dave & Busters. Before the show ... within one block of the "Bride" is Dinardos Famous Crabs. Highly rated and supposedly moderately priced ... they have non-seafood munchables too. A couple more blocks is Serrano's (under Tin Angel) very good food .. bit more expensive. Keep in mind that on Sunday evenings Philly becomes a ..... quiet city. Some things open, others closed. Great for parking on the street ! For those who want to get a buzz on, try Katmandu Club ... again on the water down along Columbus Blvd.... a happening place! Feeling adventuresome .... take a walk along South Street. The only street I know where you can get pierced, branded, and tattooed all in the same night ... if you like Korn and Pantera, you'll love South Street. I guess I'm trying to be heard above the din at Dave and Busters! Well, that chain started in metro Atlanta where I live, and I personally find it an assault on the senses, on one's peace of mind, it's noisy, brash, and crazy-making. I challenge anyone to hold a decent conversation there. A lot of diversions like games and drink for folks who want to play and not talk...but I think the point of an ecto-gathering is to "talk" and get to know each other in person, eh? I personally will never set foot into a Dave & Busters again, once being enough for me. But to each his/her own, I guess...definitely not my cup of tea (but some of the other places you suggest sound interesting though.) > Finally, I'm not the "point" person here. I got the best price there, and Marty from Chicago also switched to that motel from another where he was going to pay almost three times as much. I know folks may not like airport locations, but we fly out Monday morn at 7 so it's very convenient for us. And that particular EconoLodge is supposed to be one of the chain's highest rated properties. Our room is even going to have a coffeemaker and an ironing board in it!!! If so, that also appears on the definitely-worth-getting _B-Sides, Rarities, and Other Stuff_ compilation. Actually, seems like that was a b-side at some point too (Sarah premiered that song, back when it was called "Fall From Grace", on the summer '95 tour with the Chieftains)...No, wait, I think that was even earlier that it was "Fall From Grace" and then it had turned into "Full of Grace" as of the summer tour. I am SO confused. Anyway, that's probably the track you're looking for. Originally Fall from Grace as played during the Fumbling Tour third leg when she had Paula Cole opening (end of 94, spring of 95), later changed to Full of Grace. It was written for the movie _First Knight_, that sad affair of King Arthur with the shining Sean Connery and the bland Richard Gere...it was never used because Sarah and the director agreed that it didn't fit the movie (although everyone else thought it was lovely)...it was later put on the Bed of Roses soundtrack (i think) and the Moll Flanders soundtrack (i know). I've watched that season finale about 4 times, and everytime that song comes on, i get all misty...they used it SO well...and the great thing (sorta) is that when it first aired, that Buffy show was followed by the season finale of Dawson's Creek (eep) and they used _Angel_ by sarah also from surfacing, in an also exceptionally moving way... And now I'm watching Due South again (thank the gods for TNT) and of the first 5 episodes I've watched, Sarah's "Uphill Battle" and "Fear" have been used in two different episodes...featured in the other episodes have been Crash Test Dummies, Holly Cole, and Loreena McKennitt. Reason enough why YOU should be watching the show, my fellow ectophiles ;) Thanks to vickie for reminding us all that TNT was bringing the show back. For those of you who never heard of them, they were a chicago band that did very quirky alternapop tunes with female singer, 5-string electric voilin, lots of weird sound effects and synths, and just about everything but a guitar. The lead singer sometimes sounds like Soiuxsie and sometimes sounds like Anneli Marian Drecker (of Bel Canto). Anyway, the band is now defunct, but you might be wondering what the people in that band are involved in... Well, no doubt some of you heard of My Scarlet Life, a pop/trip-hop diva-led band which Preston is in with a bunch of others. But what most of you do not know is that Preston, Char and Yvonne, along with some people in MSL and the cellist from Black Tape for a Blue Girl, and a few others, all got together to put out this amazing album called Bed of Roses: The Kissing Tree. It's mostly instrumental soundtracky music, with lots of stringed instruments, sitar-guitar and drony synths. I heard it and it blew me away. I ordered it directly from the label since it's not distributed very well. When I heard it, I sent e-mail to Preston telling him how much I liked it... In reply, he said: "Thanks for the compliments on KISSING TREE! The 5-6 people who've heard it so far really like it!" Like I said, it's not distributed very well. I had to write a check, stick it in an envelope, manually address it, and put a stamp on it, and drop it in the mailbox before I was able to hear this music. But it was worth the effort. I'm embarassed to admit that I find _Don't Get Too Comfortable_ one of the more addictive discs in recent purchasing history. I mean, I've got other, more substantial albums queued up next to this one. Moreover, I was the first person to dump on this unassuming little ensemble when their first album, _Who Let All The Monkeys Out?_, was released to mass ignorance. The twee sacharrane that marred the first album seems to have billowed into a marshmallow center to a yummy musical confection...the instrumentation has fleshed out into a sound reminiscent of better musicians -- the bossa nova tempos and cirrus-cloud moogs sound like outtakes from Lida Husik's _Fly Stereophonic_, and the heartfelt, drony coda sounds to "Jad Fair" is reminiscent of Galaxie 500. Of course, the band's tributes occasionally fall flat, as with the unconvincing Liz Phair-esque monotone singer Jenny Juristo will occasionally take. And for a pair of former performance poets, the lyrics can read hackneyed on the page (though next to _A Night Without Armor_, they IMO IMO IMO look like Shakespeare in comparison), though the emotion they breathe into their words make them believable and poignant. Overall, it's probably going to be a momenary obsession that will sit on the shelf collecting dust in three months, but for now it's fun, breezy pop. Plus, the new Lida Husik album is another boring technoexperiment, so maybe this is just picking up the slack. Wow, that was EXACTLY like my last post on the subject. Sorry for the redundancy. The other big musical rediscovery this week has been Veda Hille, whose work was pleasant enough when I first tripped upon it. While I can't say that I've bonded with it in the same way I've bonded with, say, Neutral Milk Hotel, I must admit that I was listening to it the other day and certain things just jumped out at me and make me say, "whoa!" The biggest factor that's bitten me is the song "strange, sad"...listening to it in passing, I thought, "oh, pretty folk song." Today I had tuned in a bit closer and realised that its nicely tuneful melody belied and contrasted with the lyrics, which seem to partially be about a car crash. Yikes -- that changes the entire way I heard the song. It also bears mentioning that, if I can fit it on there, "26 Years" is going to be the last song on a one-sided mix tape (the other side is _In the Aeroplane_). While she doesn't have the je ne sais quoi that would catapult her to "artistic hero" status, she's starting to look a little more interesting. And, of course, I can't fit all six minutes of the song on the tape. It cut off at 2:30. Grrr. Oh yeah, and since I didn't get around to talking about it last time -- _Middlescence_, the new Amy Rigby album, is a true hit-and-miss affair. The album has some real winners, and I'm glad to say that my two fave songs from when I saw her, "The Summer of My Wasted Youth" and the hidden bonus track "I'm Gonna Give the Drumme Some", have made it to disc. There are also some real winners in the form of a lounge/samba experiment called "Laboratory of Love" and the heartbreaking "Ivory Tower", but some tracks just don't work. I find myself skipping over the annoying spoke-sung "What I Need", and the bouncy rhythm can't hold my interest when the lyrics to "As Is" (about bargain shopping) are so painfully bad. If you haven't heard her but are intrigued with what you may have heard ABOUT her, go with _Diary of a Mod Housewife_ first -- while I like some of the songs on _Middlescence_ better, the album sounds like an odds and sods collection. That is all. Thank you. And good night. - ---- Chelsea, the mod pixie home: away: tugboat@channel1.com odyshape@hotmail.com "I started out as a missionary, but I couldn't find a religion which didn't promise things to some people at the exclsion of others.
